Glasgow is back. Once the second city of the British Empire, when its shipping, industry and commerce circled the globe, it has reinvented itself as a cultural powerhouse of music, creative arts, theatre, design and innovative cuisine.
The transformation from a period of economic decline has been dramatic. It began in earnest in the 1980s, and by the end of the decade it had been proclaimed European City of Culture, followed by City of Architecture and Design, and Unesco City of Music - the first British city to win this accolade. The rusting shipyards faded into history, and in their place rose the striking futuristic architecture of award-winning museums and performance venues.
It remains one of the most eclectic architectural cities in Europe, with a wealth of extravagant Victorian buildings in red and blond sandstone with artistic flourishes. Look out for Italianate palazzo frontages, Art Nouveau masterpieces reminiscent of Gaudi, classical Greek and Roman motifs, and the lavish Spanish Renaissance style of its Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
Glasgow is a sociable city that has always known how to party. In the 1920s it had 81 ballrooms and dance halls, more than anywhere else in Britain, and thousands were still dancing to big bands in the famed Barrowland as German bombers roared overhead in the 1940s.
The music scene today is more diverse and dynamic, with scores of pubs and clubs rocking to indie bands, cool jazz, fiery folk and Latin rhythms, and concert halls showcasing the classics. An average of more than 100 music events take place each week, with international headline acts staged in the city’s stunning new SSE Hydro arena. Scotland’s national orchestra, opera and ballet companies have all based themselves in Glasgow, and in 2019 the city was voted Europe's leading festival and events destination in the World Travel Awards.
The city’s original Gaelic name, Glaschu, means ‘Green Place’ and it boasts one of the greatest arrays of public parks and woodland in Europe

@@achilles_1118 Hello internet stranger, let me just take the bait that you left out there so nicely. Money doesnt build a city, people do, sure Glasgow had merchants who sold goods which used slave labour but that doesnt tarnish an entire city and all its legacy as being built with 'colonial blood money'. I don't know if you're from Glasgow or spent much time there, but if you had then you would probably be aware of the abject poverty that existed only a few decades ago (and still does, although to a much lesser exent nowadays). It was once one of the most overcrowded cities in the world and the most deprived in the UK for a long time. I'm not against the sentiments of your comment, but in your opinion, are there any cities which arent built by the efforts of the lower classes (slaves or not)? To my knowledge, its been the case since our earliest (known) civilisations in Mesopotamia over 6000 years ago. Roman, Greek, Scandinavian, Russian, Chinese, South American, Mongolian, Arab empires... Is there something that is worse about the British flavour of it? I suppose I take some offence because your comment implies that people in Glasgow lived some charmed exitence because the ruling classes were playing war games all over the world, resulting in some pretty buildings being created, when the reality is that 95%+ of the population were living in squalor, just as humans did for millenia before that and will continue to do for many more. If someone commented how beautiful Rome was, would you say it was built on colonial blood money? Never thought I would be comparing Glasgow to Rome but there you go :D I hope you can take the sentiment of what I am saying here and not feel that I am attacking you. Peace!

@@ahmedfarves9382 Hi Ahmed. It's a good choice to study in Glasgow. The people and city are so warm for international students. Yes, you can apply for a part-time job (coz I did it). Also, living expenses in Glasgow are more affordable compared to London.

Going next week!! Not just my first trip to Glasgow, but to Scotland (I am ashamed to say I am in England XD But never got around to going until now)! Good to know Central Station, the Cathedral and the Modern arts museum as so close! Missed two golden opportunities at 27:30 and again around 29:00 to capture two of Glasgow's most famous icons. First, you missed the Duke of Wellington statue with or without the traffic cone on it's head. Secondly you went the wrong way around the square missing the famous Rogano restaurant.
