    The image on the box is not incorrect. It's The Enterprise from the Mirror Universe.

    I find the model's fidelity too lackluster to really deem it a 'fantastic model'. To me, the wonky bridge cake and saucer edge is pretty damning. Eaglemoss is supposed to be the one that can get the most fidelity out of their files, and here, they bunged it.
    It's the same kind of hiccup you'd see on the Beyond Enterprise, which was supposed to have six-phaser banks dorsal/ventral and only ended up with three when the magazine cover picture is very in-your-face with that detail.
    I'd expect these flaws out of a toyline, but not out of something that's obviously catered as high-quality collectables and then go and get made as XL versions to get even MORE details out. Here, it stumbles.

    • @Anduril74871
      @Anduril74871 6 років тому +1

      I don't quite get the accuracy issues. For the Beyond Enterprise, they even ASKED the community for lists of what was changed. Sometimes it's understandable, like with the Defiant since they basically created a hybrid of the studio and CGI models. Some ships I have are darn near perfect like the Delta Flyer or the USS Shenzhou. But then you have the lack of many details on the 2009/ID Enterprise, some of which end up on the Beyond Enterprise, you have the missing paint on ships like the Probert 1701-C, and then you have this XL 1701-A. For the most part, yes, it's a good MODEL. But when it comes to the decals, most of them are twice as big as they need to be or are in the wrong place. And then there's the bridge. I could forgive the saucer edge, but not the bridge and decks below it. That section is awful. This is why I'm not a subscriber. I buy select ships, and I usually end up happy with them. If I had bought this, I would not be happy. The freaking Diamond Select models look better.

    I have this and my biggest problem is the missing sensor rings. Why that is on the mini refit and not the XL version is odd. They should hire you as a consultant.

  • @Foomandoonian
    @Foomandoonian 6 років тому +16

    I can't overlook these 'little' issues at all. It's not nitpicky or minor. The lettering on the side of the saucer combined with the lack of sensor strips make this look like a toy. It's a shame because it's so close to looking like a nice model of my favourite Enterprise, but they failed drastically on the finishing touches.

      On Star Trek TMP , the outer chiller grilles were actually metallic silver, they looked black in the movie because of back ground reflection.

    • @johnbockelie3899
      @johnbockelie3899 4 роки тому

      Originally the TMP Enterprise was going to use the Phase 2 outer bridge. Andy Probert used his outer bridge instead. The rest is history.

    Interesting that the bridge and B/C decks look more like the original Richard Taylor design, which was changed after the model was damaged by a leaking air conditioner that dripped water on the bridge area and ruined it. Andrew Probert redesigned the bridge module to look like what we're used to seeing on the finished studio model in the movies. The original Taylor design looked more like the TOS Enterprise and had a more "bulbous" bridge area. It did, indeed, have docking ports on the sides of the B/C decks as seem to be on this Eaglemoss model, though it looks as if Eaglemoss changed their minds on this at some point and attempted to "hide" the ports. You can see Richard Taylor's original blueprints at the link below. If you search "Richard Taylor Enterprise," on Google image search, you can also find some pics of the model almost completed with this bridge unit (and a few other differences) as well.
    Interestingly enough, Stuart, you actually used a pic of Taylor's version in your review here at the 5:00 mark at the top right. (The aft view of the ship) If you look at the bridge area, you can see it's not the one we see in the films. This shot was an early promo pic taken by Magicam to show that they were, indeed, getting close as they were already WAY behind schedule in production. (Most of the live shots were already complete. They were just waiting on the effects crew) This shot also shows a different shuttle bay door area and some other slight differences not seen on the finished version. Anyway, all that to say it looks more like Eaglemoss used the Taylor blueprints in designing this model, whether intentionally or accidentally. However, they did put the planetary sensor piece on the bottom, which was NOT on the Taylor version and was added by Probert when they updated after the damage to the bridge unit. Interesting!

    I ordered one a week ago and should get it Thursday or Friday. I'm glad to hear the nacelles are straight. I have the ToS Enterprise XL and the nacelles are horribly aligned. I tried gluing them in position, but still not perfect with how they fit on the pylons.

    I’ll stick with my Bandai Refit model. Had it since 2001. Perfection. I ‘ve been a student of that ship since 1979. I would nitpick the hell out of this thing. My only Eaglemoss is the Phase II ship. I do plan to pick up Eaglemoss’ K’tinga one day

      They have the odd model that's... off, as in actual design wise. Most are pretty much spot on for the price and scale though they tend to sometimes suffer from missaligned windows here and there, otherwise they're great models. It's really annoying that they keep getting this one wrong though. They've made 2 (technically 3, one being the Refit TMP model) versions of this now and all 3 have been mediocre either in build quality (the original small Refit and A models) or the design being clearly wrong in places, like this one. It looks like the actual build quality of this one is better though, I've had no complaints with the build of any other models other than the original smaller Refit and A.

  • @CaptRobertApril

    I get the impression that the team in charge of the XL line aren't the same ones who do the smaller ships, since the smaller version got most everything right.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 6 років тому +4

      Even that was messed up and a pretty crap quality model. It seems they can't manage to get the A/Refit right for some reason.

    It's a bit too off for me for the money. They put the giant text on the side of the USS Bozeman saucer section too!

  • @danielcraig9666
    @danielcraig9666 6 років тому +14

    Oddly enough, the slight variation of the bridge module and the lack of detail plus ludicrously sized text along the edges of the saucer keep me from buying this thing. The edge of the saucer and text size really put me off.

    • @johnclark2849
      @johnclark2849 6 років тому

      I just got mine today. The other mistakes are subtle but the text size on the side of the primary hull is the only one that really bothers me. I'll get over it, though. ;)

      It's not a deal killer for me. I'll be getting this one, to go to my large TOS Enterprise. I'll probably get the E, as well. I'm less familiar with the Sovereign class, so the inevitable errors on that one will likely go unnoticed by me.

    I don't buy many models but strongly considered this as I really love the Constitution refit. I could overlook all of these issues except that text on the side of the saucer. That just ruins the entire thing for me. if the designers felt there needed to be some detail there they could easily have thrown in windows, the quick but most acceptable way to fill negative space on a star ship model.

    • @daddyrabbit1981
      @daddyrabbit1981 6 років тому

      Jonathan Donaldson there are windows, but as with the small ones they are the wrong shape.

  • @marleymcleay9228

    I noted the saucer appears to be a hybrid mesh of the refit and phase 2. If anything it reminds me of the early motion picture filming model before it was finalized for filming (did I read that the filming model was damaged by water and the bridge module needed reworking?)
    I'm wondering if EM needed to scramble for an appropriate mesh after their main A model became corrupt ;), it's odd as their smaller models are accurate.
    I'll stick with my Diamond Select.
    a fraction of the price larger and more accurate.

    For the price, the errors detract from the value a bit too much for me.
    But I'm already a subscriber to the regular line so it's fine.
    I wonder if the extra large labeling is a production mistake, or if it's a directive from CBS/Paramount.
    Maybe they want to make it harder for use to use these for blue/green screen fun? :D
    But I can't think of a single model of that ship or the TOS version where the nacelles, saucer and secondary hull were spot on right out of the box.

    I have this and I agree with you it does have some visual issues. When I got it one of the nacels was popped off. When I super glues it back on it was still a little bent, not much. I agree the saucer UFP decals look a little too big. I actually like the Eaglemoss Original 1701 better. I have just sent off for the Eaglemoss 1701 refit in smaller scale, this is the 1701 refit from the motion picture and Warth of Kahn.

    I would point out you stated the aztecing was good. the Aztec design was the repetition almost double T design that was on the saucer. on the smaller refits they lacked this detail as well but had it on the "D". What it looks more like is showing the difference in the paneling. as far as in board chiller grills being blue rather than purple, they did state they were going for screen accurate rather than studio model, as the screen accurate is what is considered to be the cannon look. both those giant name registries hurt the eyes.

  • @ralphreinhardt6020
    @ralphreinhardt6020 6 років тому +1

    Aren't you showing the NCC-1701A, not the refit. The refits registry number is NCC-1701. The NCC-1701A was the ship they got at the end of Star Trek 4 .

    Do they have a version without the A in the registration number, I just always liked it being the original Enterprise and not just it’s namesake, just a little question I see a lot of people complaining that it can’t be the original because the saucer and 2nd dary hull don’t match up know ones mentioned that the saucer can be separated and the could have been refitted separately and then redocked

    All the other XL ships have the thing facing right to left, so it looks like it was shot properly but flipped for some stupid reason.

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 6 років тому

      TalesOfWar the Enterprise is normally shown flying in that direction because of the way the studio model was mounted, so I think late they decided to flip it and no one took into account the script being backwards because I highly suspect where that wouldn't be a large obvious problem, just like backwards Chinese writing to us doesn't look much different. It's too bad that the packaging was such a harbinger of the interior

    The impulse engines look a little small to me. Don't know if that's the camera or if they did that on purpose for the stand to fit. The bridge does look disproportioned to me as well. Its too big I think and it makes the saucer look too thin to be 2-3 decks of volume. I could be wrong though.

    I honestly feel that if you want the most realistic Enterprise refit, the Polar Lights model build is the most accurate. I’m building the 1/1000 scale & doing the aztec decal set. Tamiya pearl white makes the Enterprise look SPECTACULAR in the light! I’ll admit it’s a big job & all the decals are almost overwhelming but the end job for all your hard work will be well worth it. -Live long & prosper-🖖🏼

  • @nefdsnet
    @nefdsnet 6 років тому +8

    Sorry Eaglemoss, I would never accept this many mistakes, not even for a tenth of the price. However nice it is to have such a huge selection of ships, too many of your models deviate way too far in shapes and colors. And even with the ones closer to the original designs you only have about a 1 in 10 chance (or even lower) of getting somewhat accurately positioned decals and details. Just randomly check the many reviews on UA-cam, there's almost always several issues with each piece. Too nice and expensive for toys yet nowhere near model quality.

    I have a lot of the Art Asylum ships. I find them better looking, closer to real paint jobs, bigger, and cheaper! Not to mention they have lights/sounds too! Just not seeing why people would be paying so much for Eaglemoss XL ones. Granted they produce a lot more ships than Art Asylum did/does.

      Dracounguis thanks for giving us another option. I think he has become popular just because it's a name that's been thrown around a lot, and do a lot of Polly models but now it seems that they might be trading a little bit on their name, like car companies such as Lincoln at one time was synonymous with very high-quality luxury cars and then later put that same name plate on rebodied Fords, diluting the brand.

    I think the only Enterprise model to have the sensor bands was the NCC-1701 Refit from Issue 2. None of the Kelvinverse Enterprises have them (though the Beyond version did have windows painted where those bands should have been) and the standard NCC-1701-A didn't have them either.
    Such a recognisable detail left off every single time for Constitution-classes after issue 2. Yet: other ships like the Reliant and the Stargazer DO have them...

    I did notice the colors are highly inaccurate, but I expect as much from such a small model, and based on the materials and paint used. I wonder if they changed the color a bit to differentiate it from the regular 1701 refit. In the films, the A had a much duller, grey and blue aztec finish, and blue engineering sections. The 1701 had a shimmering 5 color aztec with grey/green engineering. It would be hard to show such fine details on such a small ship, so Eaglemoss may have exaggerated some of the colors. Same with the fonts that were too large. They may have been more concerned with readability, for some reason or another.

    Hey Captain Foley, I wonder if Eaglemoss is planning a large scale Phase 2 refit and the factory is confusing the details between the Refit and Phase 2.
    There have been other companies that have used this type of technique to cut costs when releasing various models based off of the same base designs.
    Seeing as how that model is an Enterprise A, didn't they make slight changes to the color scheme of the studio model?
    It is still a nice model regardless of the little mistakes. The side Edges of the saucer on the other hand, cannot be forgiven. Bad Eaglemoss.

    I don't get how Eaglemoss got the small versions right but really fudged the XL version up big time. A lot of us Trekkies aren't happy with this release and can't blame us. They seriously dropped the ball.
    I also have a huge issue with misaligned windows... I plan on getting the XL Voyager (and Defiant) and saw a review on the Voyager. I'll probably gently scrape off the paint from the windows and properly redo them myself.
    It seems like they're getting lazy with quality control lately.
    Edit: Unless I missed it you forgot to point out the bridge design too. The whole A-C decks (you pointed out the B/C decks) are from the Phase II Enterprise version. They're not the proper version of the ship.

    I've noticed that fit gap on several Eaglemoss models. I really don't understand why people love them so much, especially for the price. They look like cheap, though generally decently detailed, toys.

    Great model apart from, this, this, that.... etc You'll get exactly what you ordered, a refit of an refit. lol. Just joking. The box art puzzles me, I get that eaglemoss ordered x amount and couldn't reorder (cost) after the blunder, but at no point during the process someone said, 'why flip the image, it will look silly.'

      Second One that's the issue of having everything made in Asia, they don't use our alphabet so if it's backwards it doesn't look strange to them. Just like their alphabet backwards would look strange to us, so it wasn't Caught no matter how eagle-eyed there quality control might have been for paint issues and things like that.

    Good honest review 😊 but if eaglemoss can't even get the box right, what hope was there of no faults on the model inside? Whoever did that box should be ashamed.

    I like the scale of this model compared to most others I've seen, but for $75 USD the fit and finish needs to be better. Sense they are preorder only on their site, hopefully this one's a prototype and production units will be improved.

    Not perfectly like the Refit Enterprise, but I still bought it. It looks like an actual refit of the original conny in a way. The fact that the saucer side is a bit empty now makes it like 75% refit 25% conny.
    I can fit this ship easily in my personal star trek universe.
    I'll just take this ship as the refit and the refit as ..the refit of ... this ship? I dunno exactly yet, but it will be okay XD

    Ok... I am a 55 yr. old Model builder that has been in the hobby since I was 5. I have built MANY "Re-Fit Enterprise" models in my life. I have in front of me AS I type this, The small "Johnny Lightning" Re-Fit Enterprise. In MY Opinion this little model is BETTER or MORE "Accurate" then the XL Model! I think they REALLY Dropped the ball on this! I guess I'm what's called a "Rivet Counter" {a military modeler's term for "PERFECTIONIST Pain in the ASS! LOL :D} But to ME to recreate ANYTHING... but ESPECIALLY something as ICONIC as THE STAR SHIP ENTERPRISE...You HAVE to strive for as close to "PERFECT" as possible!
    I am also a Costumer/Historical clothing maker and pattern maker. And Again if I am going to do something... I am going to go "ALL OUT"! No Half Assing it for me!
    And Considering that this is SUPPOSED to be a "HIGH QUALITY COLLECTIBLE" this is really a Shame! Frankly, UNTIL or IF They CORRECT these Mistakes, I will NOT Waste my Money on one! I have the BIG 1/350 Scale Enterprise Re-Fit that I haven't started on yet! But I can assure you it WILL be "CORRECT" and "SCREEN ACCURATE" to the BEST of my abilities!

    This is why I don't get the XL ships; for the money they cost they should be the definitive version over the budget regular sized models, but there's way too many flaws here. Might as well just get the smaller ships so that the errors are at least less noticeable and less expensive.

    You are missing two very important things. Firstly the shape and colouring of the Bridge is all wrong. And the second deck should be more angular than rounded. To me the Bridge and deck two are from Phase II, but with painted on grey and outlined red on deck two to make it look more like Enterprise 'A' (this is supposed to be 'A' and not the refit - although same miniature in reality). I have actually phoned Eaglemoss to highlight the inaccuracies, and I got the impression that I wasn't the first person to do so. This is one ship I will NOT be buying.

    I paid through the nose and waited a month to finally receive this, only to have both the cheap plastic deflector dish and left nacelle break off fresh out of the box. The model is nearly all cheap, brittle plastic and detail is ok at best. I have been assured a refund, yet a week later have yet to receive. I don't know how Eaglemoss received this lucrative contract from Paramount...But it seems terribly unjust.

    Eaglemoss is hit or miss for me. I have a Kelvin that has a crooked nacelle and the saucer is loose. Those imperfections are not worth the cost. Got some good smaller models. The big ones are a risk.

    I appreciate you doing a complete and honest review of the model. Of all the tings you pointed out I think the Starship Lettering on the side of the saucer being so large is the thing that sticks out to me as being way off. Other than that, some of the other color issues can be fixed with some paint and a small detail brush...
    Thanks

    Man even my F toys enterprise looks better than this! how can you forget the ridging on the saucer section, screw up the font on the letter and over enlarge a bunch of parts of the ship, it looks almost like a Mattel toy model of it than a proper model of it.
