“Security is minimal.” “Nobody has ever attempted to escape.” Right, because inmates fully understand what would happen to them if they made the attempt. In states like that the guard can just draw a box in the sand, tell the inmate to stand in it, go home and have dinner then comeback to find the inmate still standing there. Fear is a hell of a motivator.

No prison riots. No gassing the guards by throwing urine or feces at them. No assaultz on guards. No good time work time like the US where they get time off for being good. Aren't they supposed to behave in prison? They don't understand our stupid lax concepts.

This is what the US needs! Unlike the US prisons, where prisoners be treated better than homeless people, China and many other country such as Russia actually punishes and disciplines their prisoners so that they can rethink their bad choices/crimes they caused. They just don’t let their prisoners sleep all day and give them recess to play like how the US do. In Russia, they will make the prisoners drop their pants down and do squats in a single line infront of each other. Whereas in China, they will make their prisoners do labor and certain routines so their prisoners just don’t eat and sleep all day. I don’t sympathize with criminals at all they deserve every inch of it especially if they’ve taken away an innocent life. They are in prisons to be punish and pay for their crimes not to be there just to sleep and play recess.

It is very difficult to compare this sort of prison to the typical American prison. First off, as the narrator said, most of these prisoners are not there for violent crimes; they've mostly committed theft, bribery, and extortion. Second, there are no ethnic differences there, meaning no primal tendency to form groups based on race. Third, we do not know how much is being censored. This was 1998, back when China was even more communist than they are now. My guess is that a lot of these guys say the right things and fear disrupting the peace within the prison because communist states have ZERO problem wiping out someone's family for one individual's choices. Fourth, they fill up nearly the whole day with tedious work and rituals to keep the prisoners occupied. This last point is actually probably the one thing that some American prisons can take note from, but still, there are extreme limits to how well a prison can force their prisoners to work when dealing with violent convicts that are serving life sentences and have nothing but their sanity to lose. Fifth, there's a large probability that a lot of this information--the information that was not obfuscated--is propaganda. For example, the claims that nobody has ever escaped or that there is only 4% recidivism both seem like dubious claims. Unfortunately, the only way to find out what is really going on there is to actually be a prisoner or a guard there. A journalist, of they were so inclined, could try to gather intel furtively through informants, but that is a huge risk in China. That's the sort of thing that could make you disappear off the face of the Earth.

I think this is what American prisons needs. Instead of sitting around gang banging each other, getting high and kicking each other’s ass only to induces more aggressive behavior which then when they get out they will not be able to adapt thus being thrown back into the prison system which is basically a vicious cycle because nothing is being learned during their sentencing. Example: let’s say someone who stole something gets thrown in prison with those who are rapists and murders. How do you you think his mental well being will be when he gets out? How do you think during his prison time is going effect his new learned behavior? Once a criminal always a criminal is true because prison doesn’t change the behavior only increases it. The whole sentencing concept is fucked up.

If 1 person escapes, the entire crew in that block will get punished for not reporting or preventing his escape.
The recidivism rate is low because the prisoner leaves knowing he will never do something stupid again. Prison is bot to he enjoyed. It is supposed to be a deterrent.
