I was a CO in a maximum security state prison for 24 years.
I was in the inmate transfer team for several years until I made sergeant when I went to a medium security prison. On one of my first transfers was from a medium security prison ( not the same one ) to a minimum security prison. I was shocked when we went in. There was one fence with no razor wire on it. The recreation yard was open all day long. There was only about 10-12 staff in the entire place for about 300-400 inmates. This place didn’t resemble a prison at all. I wasn’t getting that ‘ who has the knife feeling ‘ at all. We found the inmate reception/ property room and the whole place was run by a inmate. We had to get a staff person’s signature on all the paperwork but inmates did everything else. I spent about 30 minutes in complete amazement at not being disrespected at every point or inmates fighting. This place was calm. I saw a comparison and the minimum was significantly better.
Years later, I actually had a supervisor try and order myself and my partner ( 2 male CO’s ) to transport a female inmate somewhere. There was no chance that was going to happen. The supervisor was threatening to put us on report ( snitching on yourself is probably not a good idea ). The supervisor threatened to keep us there until we agreed to it at which point I called our home base unit commander and explained the problem and he was not amused. We were leaving minutes later.
I thought that both of those stories would amuse you. Both are sort of interesting.

In my 16 months I started in what's called safekeeping in Central Prison Raleigh NC which was about 70/30 death row convicts to inmates that were sent to the hospital there from whatever county they were arrested who were released from the hospital to safekeeping. After going to court and then processing camp you get two choices of where you'd like to be sent and I chose the smallest minimum custody camp as far west as possible where I took part in the DART program, drugs alcohol something something. Long story short small camps are much more difficult to get away with anything like smoking or hitting chow twice. I ended up with four months adseg but after 30 days I had the choice of loosing a custody level and leaving on the next bus or finishing the adseg time and remaining in minimum custody. I chose medium custody and had so much more freedom in hustling tobacco which I brought in five days a week once on a job detail. Most important is now I have 14 years clean and I'm buying my first and last house with everything approved, offer accepted just waiting on closing. Wish I had gone to prison a decade earlier but hindsight is living in the past. Peace

i always hear you saying how there are some people you dealt with who you hope never get out, obviously i understood from your words but hearing the situation of this man is a cold blooded killer, that really puts into perspective what you were dealing with honestly. i've had plenty of situations where i was quite literally fighting for my life but there were never any cold blooded killers. chills me to my core that there are people like that. some might argue the mental health aspect but regardless of what you are going through mentally if you kill someone for something as mildly inconvenient as snoring too loud you are obviously not a person who should be let out into society.

Or are most guards defensive and don't try to get to know convicts on a level they can hold a conversation? If I was locked up I'd just try to get a taste of "outside" by chatting with guards about their day to day, I think.

There are 288 holes in the vent in each cell in the new dorms of Kirkland Correctional in Columbia SC. I was there from Nov 18 to Dec 18 2007. Kirkland is R & E. There is no heat in these dorms. AC ran year round. Winter was cold as hell. Steel bunk beds, one set to a cell. Plugging the holes with single sheets of TP almost got me three days isolation. Tried to say it was damage and contraband.... Lt made me clean them out. Put them back in that night. Thin ass white thread bare blanket, no pillow, thin jumpsuit, ragged coat. R & E was probably the worst part of my bid.

sheridan camp was shit compared to where he was. one tiny rec room and a track. run down, everything is broke. 12 years ago or so it opened to the RDAP drug rehab. went from 95% white collar to 95% drug dealers so naturally we couldn't have nice things anymore. During covid everything closed for 2 years. even the chow hall. we got old, cold food out of broken food warmers and ate on our bunks. The month i spent at the FCI kitchen wasnt any better making bag lunches for 1800 people for 18 hours a day was worse than the month in the SHU. I wont do that again... Im thankful for the support of family when i was released.

Does anybody know why they didn’t just give Larry one, 12 year sentence? It seems pretty pointless to give him four consecutive sentences.
My guess is that it looks worse on a criminal record (as if 12 years doesn’t look bad enough).

so that if one of the charges was fought and got dropped, there'd still be 3 more 12 year sentences

I am 42, have a regular good beard not crazy but good, the only time in my entire life I used a razor was when I was in country for 6 months, and bracelet for 6 (bracelet was worse!). I was in a drug program, had to shave daily! and they were dicks! (clean 5 and half years now! Didn't need to spend ten years in fed max to not want my freedom taken away). Anyway still rock a full beard have since I was a teenager. I thought tours would be more grey mine is! It looks GREAT no bullshit. Don't listen to those haters that say you lost too much weight et cetera, you look great, and keep rocking the beard. You'd look good in a 6 months beard. Of you ever grew one, throw a pic up sometime. Keep it up bud.

He did 4 months, what a crybaby! I did 5 years in TDCJ for a beer run, got aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault on a public servert ,5 years on each count ran concurrent . I took it to jury trial was sentenced by the judge, those are first degree felonies 5 to 99 years.😒 I did those five years, no parole.

Minimum security prison sounds like a halfway decent getaway. Maximum security prison makes suicide seem like a reasonable option.
