This reminds me of something psychologist Dr. Judy Rosenberg said on her show WTFreud!. She said something like, " We here at the Psychological Healing Center recommend what is psychologically correct and not what is culturally correct. In some cultures the parents choose the children's careers. But just because it's part of someone's culture doesn't mean it is healthy".

I read an article by an Asian-American young male who wrote something like, "We Asians tend to dismiss this aspect of ourselves as just "a normal part of being Asian" but psychologists disagree". He then went on to write that they are suffering from NPD! Dr. Ramani also has said that there are some entire cultures that are narcissistic.
It has nothing to do with narcissism imo. Asian cultures are achievement oriented, and the consequence of this is that people don't really develop their personality much or an understanding of their feelings, emotional orientation etc.
Western cultures have their own problems too of course.

Lots of attention is paid to ideas like “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” or assuming personal problems are a consequence of personal failures or inadequacies. Most of the time, it’s a load of bullshit.
You’re a woman and got sexually assaulted? Your clothes are too revealing or you secretly wanted it all along.
You’re poor? You’re too uneducated or incapable of finding a decent job.
You’re alone in life? You’re just too unlikable (may be true for some people, but I’m talking about blanket assumptions here) or too boring or unable to take a stand and commit to someone.
You’re a man who is vulnerable and shows emotions like crying and sadness? You’re too damn soft and need to grow a pair.
You’re not straight or cisgender? You’re immediately committing a sin against God and need repentance or are mutilating your body or are mentally ill/corrupted.

The main difference between easterners and westerners (excluding southern Europeans) is that the former tend to have fairly tight family units which acts as a buffer against a relatively harsh social environment.
