@@aritry I think people lived in harder times in the past so they (and their parents) probably felt that they didn't have many choices if they want to live financially comfortably (by picking the most valuable/"safe" careers). Things are better now where doing what you like won't make your life as hard if you know where to look and how to achieve it but the older generation mindset is still there.

My asian mom kept mentioning her friend's kid is studying to become a doctor every damn time we had dinner in the evening. I'm already married, not a doctor, and working 12 hrs a day on a regular job and she still brought it up.

As an Asian I tried to study engineering, but fell into a year of bad depression and anxiety - fortunately my parents were there for me after 6 months of trying to beat it alone 😅 Now I'm studying to be a social educator and I'm way more happy 😁

Being a Chinese woman, I purposely avoided Chinese men, so not to deal with the whole "you must have a son to carry on the family name" bull. Then I have 2 boys with my non-Chinese Asian husband. 😆
funfact, most of old asian parents wish their kids to be a doctor some day, while "going to the doctor" is the bottom of the list of solution if someone is sick.
Doctors are expensive so we won't go, but they make lots of money so you should be a doctor.
It's one of the Asian paradoxes. Another one is making your kid start an instrument as a toddler, putting time and money into it, making them practice for 15 years until they reach a high level and win competitions, and then being outraged that they want to become a professional musician...
@@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia Its simple, Musical instrument help pad a resume for university, and its good for flexing to other Asian parents. At the end of the day, a lot of extra curriculars are allegedly suppose to help get into a good university, and to be fair, their thinking isn't totally wrong or completely unfounded.
In the US, and by extension in Europe, its more accepted to succeed in other various ways besides university, which is a good thing, but in many Asian countries, it is cultural accepted, or even natural, for a kid to forgo any type of entertainment, and only work and work and work to get into a good university and job. Being immigrants that grew up under these conditions, its hard to wrap around these concepts of other various ways of succeeding, because from what they experienced when they were growing up, they probably have seen many of their peers not work hard or try to be the best end up poor and miserable. Not to say that they shouldn't try and understand the different culture, but at the same time, its sort of understandable why almost all Asian parents think that way.

If you make this your career, they will treat you like the family shame unless you manage to win a recognizable and well-known award for it someday (like an Oscar, or a Nobel Prize), then they are suddenly proud of you and boasting about you to everyone they know about how supportive and proud they were of you for so many years. Plus stripping while playing classical music is extremely sacrilegious. TwoSet Violin hate it when people strip while playing a classical music piece on a talent show. It's really tacky in my opinion too. I never knew it was a thing on talent shows until I saw some clips in TwoSet videos where they criticized the phenomenon.

When Eddy said he studies talent shows it reminded me of all the times we saw stripping and flight of the bumblebee. Something inside me unleashed. I knew what would happen. Eddy showed up. He served. And he outdid everyone who stripped and played flight of the bumblebee. He may have humiliated the Asian parents. But he made me so proud, he has come so far :')
