Wow, what a skilled playthrough! You are indeed a "Game Master" for beating this on the highest difficulty. Always a joy to watch people play through the _Splatterhouse_ games, which hold a special place in my heart.
The controls to this game are absolutely abysmal so yeah, it actually is a pretty amazing feat that they were able to beat this game on the highest difficulty. It must have been a real pain in the ass.
First game was an absolute tour de force of art, and story-telling for the time. Consider the stage after Jennifer fades to mist in your arms, when you're in Rick's subconscious fighting off little embryonic-looking things that emerge from sacs of fluid and then beat the shit out of a heart at the end is a great piece of symbolism to capture Rick's grief at losing his love. Once you beat the stage it gets even better because now the whole forest is on fire, implying that while you were deep in Rick's mind processing his grief, he was going mad with it and setting the trees alight.
First off? That wasn't a heart Rick was punching, second.. the destruction of said organ "killed" that particular possessed house on the west estate, the collapsing of the house and subsequent damage to the systems (either electrical or more likely gas) is what set it ablaze. We've still yet to get the final word on what came out of the mask at the very end.. was it the spirit of Dr. West or something altogether more sinister.. but? The second game takes place on/ in the ruins of the old west house and the lakeside manor. The third is the Master regenerating the first house.

After Jennifer dies, Rick, filled with rage, makes the decision to tear this house to the ground. Where does he do that? The houses womb. When he kills that heart, he kills the house. And how does the house die? It burns. I read a UA-cam comment on a song from the previous game to figure that out.

and the music kicks ass too. and the fact that the blue - the Evil One giant actully comes back as a semi-final boss in Splatterhouse 3, confiriming that the mask manipulated Rick to cause the Evil One to invade the real world. pretty great stuff for a 30 year old arcadey game

This game was surprisingly thoughtful in the way it handled such dark and gory material, at least for a Genesis game. There's an almost Hieronymus Bosch-quality to the graphics. Like the devs are inviting you to partake in the obscene spectacle of it all. I always loved it as a kid but then, I think that was probably just my juvenile tendencies acting out more than anything.
if I was 4 or 5 years old now, this game would have been the most scary game for me, most probably - even scarier than 'Prince of Persia' or 'Interrupt'
Watching these splatterhouse Long Plays makes me feel like i am trash, very amusing to watch but very bad on my ego as these were childhood games i grew up on and put alot of hours into. hahaha good job!
Navigating patterns in life is so important for survival. My head canon always was. As long as the mask exists, the house will rise again. And will tie X person's destiny to be the mask's "host" to repeat the cicle until the host dies. Then the mask looks for another one and so goes on.
As a kid I watched someone play sp1 in the arcade and was absaloutley taken in aw, in school I got sp2 off freind, I played it to death, still think it's one of the best games and music ever :) I also played steel empire to death another truly amazing mega drive game with awesome music :)

This is one of those games where you turn down the music and play your own kick-ass music. Idk about you guys but the music would just keep playing in my mind and throughout the night while I slept. Torturous.
I believe it was because the first one was an arcade game. But when they brought it to consoles, they toned down the difficulty as killing the player over and over wasn't going to get them more quarters.

It makes the horror work too. These are already inhuman monsters, and you can tell they're afraid of whatever is off-screen, used to work pretty well.
