A medium heavy rod 7-9ft paired with a 5000 size reel will do you good, there’s a lot big boys out in the bay. You can never go wrong with frozen anchovies or squid! Soft plastics will work in certain places, just gotta find the honey holes!
Waiting that long to release a fish isn’t the best way to treat a fish you intend to release. Good thing sharks are pretty hardy and can deal better than most. In the future you should try to release them faster.
