History of Ukraine and Its Geopolitics Without Disinformation, Impressions, or Sentiments Ukraine was one of the most developed parts of the Soviet Union after Russia. During the existence of the USSR, Ukraine was the second-largest economy within the union, after Russia, thanks to its strong agriculture, heavy industry, and strategic location. Ukraine was known for its high level of agricultural production, particularly in grain cultivation, making it an important food producer. Additionally, it had a well-developed industry, including steel production, coal mining, and engineering. Many Ukrainian regions, such as Donbas and Dnipro, were key to Soviet industrialization. This economic strength, developed infrastructure, and cultural and historical heritage made Ukraine an important player within the USSR and gave the country decent prospects for the future. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine faced serious economic and political challenges that influenced its development after gaining independence in 1991. Geopolitical Neutrality After Independence After achieving independence in 1991, Ukraine found itself in a geopolitical situation between the East and the West. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was oriented toward neutrality, as expressed in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994. Under this agreement, Ukraine agreed to surrender its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees from the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom. This neutrality allowed Ukraine to establish bilateral relations with both major blocs, the West and the East, without falling under either’s influence. Ukraine welcomed this neutrality, and both powers were pleased with the nuclear disarmament of the country. The benefits of such neutrality were enormous. Few countries in the world had similar guarantees from major powers, and history shows that these neutral states often thrived economically and politically. Ukraine could benefit from trade and energy advantages without facing the pressures associated with joining any military alliance. It had the opportunity to make bilateral agreements with both Russia and the West, providing stability and economic benefits. With Russia, Ukraine could maintain relationships in energy and trade, securing stable and very cheap supplies of gas and oil while negotiating energy prices due to its role as a transit country to the EU. On the other hand, relations with the West, particularly the EU and the US, brought technological development, trade support, and access to European markets. Neutrality was also expected to provide Ukraine with political flexibility, which would mean stability and space for internal development without having to choose between two blocs. Without military alliances, Ukraine could protect its security cheaply thanks to international guarantees. However, we know how Ukraine managed this situation. The country was divided among so-called oligarchs, and corruption reached unprecedented levels in Europe. Pro-European and pro-Russian parties alternated in power like clockwork. The Shift After 2004: The Orange Revolution After 2004, due to the "Orange Revolution" and the rise of a pro-Western government led by Viktor Yushchenko and Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine began seeking closer ties with NATO and the European Union, leading to a gradual departure from neutrality. The Tragic Shift in 2013 In 2013, under President Yanukovych, Ukraine postponed signing an association agreement with the European Union, sparking mass protests known as Euromaidan. Many pro-European supporters argued that the agreement could have been approved after the next elections, ensuring broader political legitimacy and avoiding destabilization. However, previous election results, globally recognized as legitimate, indicated this was highly unlikely. At the time of the protests, there was one year and five months until the next elections. Russia reacted to Ukraine’s decision to break its neutrality and begin accession talks with the EU by offering lower energy prices and financial assistance to restructure Ukraine's debt. Despite this, Ukraine continued its integration into the EU, which Russia logically saw as a clear departure from the neutrality guaranteed by the Budapest Memorandum. Consequently, Ukraine forfeited the guarantees provided by the memorandum. The 2014 Coup and Policy Shift After Yanukovych was overthrown and fled to Russia, a new pro-Western government took power. This transition of power was both internationally and domestically illegitimate and was strongly supported by the West, which began investing in Ukraine to support so-called democratization or pro-Western processes. The US alone invested over $5 billion to support "reforms," which was understandably seen as interference in Ukraine's internal politics. Western support, including financial and military aid, strengthened Ukraine's pro-European direction but violated the framework of neutrality enshrined in the Budapest Memorandum. Cutting Off State Finances to Disloyal Regions Following the 2014 coup, when the pro-European government came to power, a significant step was taken that had long-term consequences for Ukraine’s internal political situation. Eastern and southern parts of Ukraine, loyal to the former pro-Russian government, were excluded from access to public finances. This led to deep economic and political isolation in these regions, exacerbating dissatisfaction. Regions that had previously relied on state transfers and support faced economic difficulties, fostering separatist tendencies and support for pro-Russian forces. Creation of Separatist Units in Eastern Ukraine New separatist units in eastern Ukraine emerged mainly in response to attacks carried out by nationalist units from the western part of the country. These units, supported and financed by the new pro-European regime, were perceived as a threat to the Russian-speaking population and pro-Russian areas. Violence and repression in these regions, including battles against local residents, led to declarations of independence and the establishment of separatist republics. Russia supported these separatist forces not only with military aid but also with logistical and material assistance. The Eastern War and Annexation of Crimea In response to changes in government and the cessation of state aid to eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, separatist forces in Donbas, supported by Russia, began fighting against the new regime. This conflict, resulting in thousands of deaths and destroyed cities, escalated into an armed war between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists. In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, which the West viewed as a violation of international law, leading to international sanctions against Russia. Political and Economic Polarization After the 2014 coup and the escalation of conflict in eastern Ukraine, the country’s political polarization deepened. Western Ukraine, which supported the pro-European orientation, remained loyal to the new government, while eastern regions felt neglected and economically demoralized. This divide fueled ongoing conflict in Donbas, where separatists backed by Russia clashed with Ukrainian forces. Zelenskyy’s Victory and Promises In the 2019 presidential elections, held only in loyal territories, Volodymyr Zelenskyy won, promising to end the war and stabilize the country. Zelenskyy declared that he would allow the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine to avoid persecution and that Russian would be recognized as an official language alongside Ukrainian. His promises to end the war and ensure the rights of the Russian-speaking population were seen as attempts to improve relations between pro-Russian and pro-European parts of Ukraine. However, instead of pursuing peace, the new Western puppet announced a decree banning negotiations for a ceasefire and allowed continued persecution of the Russian-speaking population. 😘

Question: why are there any bridges left in Russia, on the way to Ukraine? If all the bridges in the roads and railroads connecting Russia to Ukraine were destroyed, Russia wouldn´t be able to send anything to the frontlines, at least not effectively. I will greatly appreciate if someone can explain why this hasn´t been done yet. Thank You very much.
As I recall from the Cherson campaign, it requires A LOT of bomb strikes to damage a concrete highway bridge beyond repair. And there are many bridges to destroy for this tactic to become effective, and then it becomes necessary to monitor every river for pontoon bridges and destroy them. This was the tactic in a limited area in the Kursk region: taking out just three bridges was meant to trap Russian troops on the wrong side of the Seim River but this tactic apparently didn't work out because these efforts were abandoned by Ukrainians eventually. But you are right about hindering the enemy's logistics, it's more a matter of finding the most effective method to do that. Striking railroad locomotives seems to be a new idea, but I cannot help but thinking that the vast railroad of Russia operates tens of thousands of locomotives and losing two is a drop in the bucket. But I suppose a locomotive can be completely demolished with fewer strikes than a bridge and maybe there will be a local shortage of locomotives in the area in the short run. So, maybe it's a good idea...
@@mattiasthorslund6467 Thank you for your reply, it was very useful. I didnt know that destroying a bridge required multiple strikes, I was under the impression that one missile was enough. Once again, thank you!

I find it interesting how V2 had a warhead of 910 kg, but the whole rocket weighted 12500 kg. So the payload was only about 7% of the weight. On ATACMS it is 13% - 30%. Wikipedia says its warhead is 214 kg, but I suppose you can trade a heavier load for a shorter max distance.
The materials are completely different today. The latest chemistry of explosives now have far more explosive power using less material. Rockets can also be built with new alloys, plastics, or composites. Microchip controls replace older and heavier guidance systems.

@ Not after January 20. And however much materiel they receive, their desperate need is for something no one can give them - more Ukrainian troops. They themselves say they are increasingly outnumbered, and their demographic pyramid of military-age men is one of the few that is worse than Russia’s - and that is on a population about a third as large. The AFU has extreme personnel challenges.

UA-cam is going to "kill the goose that laid the golden egg."🐍 I will go to your site ASAP. I like your maps bc it helps me visualize the warfront & understand the situation better. Thank you. Will be checking in on this channel as well. Good luck with the appeal.
Decades of improvement
The materials are completely different today. The latest chemistry of explosives now have far more explosive power using less material. Rockets can also be built with new alloys, plastics, or composites. Microchip controls replace older and heavier guidance systems.

Not bad for something designed in 1986
If Ukraine was able to used it two years ago or during the start of the war it could have avoided a lot of Ukrainian casualties.
Devil's advocate: the restrictions were needed in order for the other aid to be shipped early in the war, because lots of nations were worried about escalation.
But the restrictions also led to Russia getting really lazy and comfy. I honestly think the ATACMS can do more damage now, than they would have if restrictions had never been in place.
Gotta love them ATAC-MIS-missles ;)
Something along the lines of "Thank goodness they aren't smart" keeps coming to mind watching the russian disasters time after time. How did they manage to get to space in the 60s?
Ukraine probably assisted them
