  • Joni Mitchell surprised the Newport Folk Festival crowd when she joined Brandi Carlile onstage for her first public performance in nine years. So many people don't like the tone of her voice now. Her years of smoking took its toll on her vocal cords but personally, I love the tone of her voice now, better than when she was younger. When you listen to the lyrics of "Both Sides Now" & compare her original version to today's version you realize that it was written by a young person who hadn't experienced life fully & now, that same person has, & she was able to make it through to the other side. What a beautiful life journey, & she shared it with us.

@@dee_dee_place So do you think people even compare Bob Dylan's voice now to what it was when he was in his twenties?
      Nope.
It's an inappropriate judgement of a woman that makes me disappointed in people who pull that crap.
Cher's voice has changed as she's gotten older. Bonnie Raitt's voice is different, if you compare it from when she was in her twenties. Dionne Warwick's voice is different but it's still a beautiful voice. It's the QUALITY OF THE DELIVERY that matters.

Wow! This is wonderful! And the fact that she played her guitar again! People who are not guitar players probably don't realize what an incredible guitarist she is. The average person thinks that heavy metal shredders are great players, and many of them have great technique. But Joni belongs to a special pantheon of players that play the instrument in their own unique way. No one else plays like she does. In a world where everything seems so terrible these days seeing Joni playing and singing in front of a live audience is the best thing I have seen in a very long time.

Joni’s fighting, restless spirit drove her to keep pushing the envelope and exploring new ways to express herself. Than you Brandi for making this happen, it was a joy to hear her voice getting strong again. I hope Joni gets the Nobel prize as her lyrics are uniquely insightful, eloquent, witty, sincere & totally original. It is magnificent poetry even without the incredible melodies that make her words soar. She was innovative & has never been matched, her expressive, concise writing has been a voice for many generations. I felt a little sorry for Paul Simon for being overshadowed; his music has a rare quality which should never be forgotten.

Those songs, during these times, still serving a purpose to move people to tears, to joy and action...Thank You, Joni.
Here we go again, battling oppression by an over zealous, misguided, yet powerful (McNamara/Schlafly like) MINORITY.

Joni Mitchell. You have always had my adoration. How could you pull even more from me? As a poet who has published over 20 books since undergraduate school in the mid-70s, I have often said you have been one of the MAJOR influences on my work and performance since the 60s when I began listening to you, learning from you. You are one of the great treasures of American, international music.

Absolutely the greatest of her time, and she'll yet today her music is so very popular with all generations. She loves you she makes you feel deep down inside your core. And the love absolutely makes your heart just won't to explode. One could blame it on being hormonal.! We know that's all. One cries a river when listening to Joni Mitchell. I have loved her since I was 12 years old, 62 now
