Thane Krios Dialogue Mass Effect 2 and 3

- Screen captures of Thane Krios dialogue through Mass Effect 2 and 3. Romanced female Renegade Shepard. During his loyalty mission the screen glitched and Thane is invisible, but I figured that was in character... I read out the letter he wrote to Shepard because why wouldn't I want to cry some more?
Garrus is cool.
Thane is cool.
Put them in room together and Shepard's a popsicle.
Right? Best. Combo.
12:41 Ok I can't believe an alien is quoting Thomas Hobbes and for a split second there actually making me go "Damn, how the hell does he know my species so well? I don't know any Drell political philosophers, i'm so dumb.." Before realizing oh yeah this is a game and someone wrote that line for him. The immersion in these games is intense!
It's an extraordinary piece of storytelling. I went on to make up head canon Drell philosophers of my own just to keep up with the immersion.
Thane mentions how no one would mourn him when he dies and he accepts it.
He is mortally wounded being a hero where the Council is thankful for his sacrifice.
When he does pass, he is with his son and Si'ha. His last words are praying for you.
A memorial service is held where his closest friends remember and speak fondly of him.
How wrong he was.
If ever a man should have been given a vacation instead of a proposition to kill more people... Inherently wrong to recruit him, but granting him purpose, family and community is a greater good. With ammo.
Thane is one of the most unique, interesting, badass character i've ever met in a videogame. He's just AMAZING! watching him die in ME3 was really hard to swallow and i'm sure that if he wasn't sick at the time he fought Kai Leng he would've killed this fucking ninja wannabe with his eyes closed.
Btw, great video, it made me remember how i just went to Thane room every moment i could on the normandy just to know more about him, i didn't go for the romance since i was playing with male shepard though.
Yes to all of that! I've written some fiction following the storyline... and each time I have to think "Why didn't you shoot him in the head when you had a chance, Thane?" The answer for me is always "Because some writer somewhere... wanted to sacrifice character for plot." So then I go write a Thane that doesn't follow the storyline and I feel much better... and worse... because with Thane 'interesting' happens.
Agree! When i watch those kind of scenes where a character could've easily kill the antagonist o any enemy i think... Why? why would you make such a nonsense? It completely kills my inmersion, if you're gonna make such an scene, you should just not make it at all because if you ask me, it doesn't make it more badass or epic, it makes it stupid. It's nice you create your own plot, somehow makes you feel better for what should've been, and not what it really was.
Absolutely. Also, I got Thane killed in my first run through, there was guilt. Then I saved him through the second run through and that was WORSE. So yeah, I've written two canon endings that I mostly justify by making him (not a stretch) a determinedly suicidal man out to protect Shepard. (Not incompetent.)
Then I changed the universes, cured Keprals twice and also made it so he never got it, created a Paragade Thane, a Redeemed Thane and a flat out evil Thane... and I love them all. Yes, even the evil one. I shouldn't. I do. Fine. He's evil. He's not DUMB though.
@@recidivaquixotic7207 Madame, you have a passion for a man who does not exist, one strong enough to border on low-grade madness. As someone who's all for such things, I salute you, and your taste in usernames.
@@cr820 Thank you! I'd like to think it's high-grade madness with some accenting streaks of... other things. I'm replaying the Legendary edition. Got all the achievements. Insanity playthroughs are still hard to do. Passion for imaginary people is a good thing in a writer. Considering my version of Thane now qualifies as a co-author, the madness was a good investment. I'm still going to romance Garrus, though!
I. WANT. HIS. VOICE.
YOU. HAVE. EXCELLENT. TASTE.
Smoke a pack of cigarettes a day for a couple years. Perhaps it would also give you an end fitting of Thane.
"I hurt them"
An example of how less can truly be more.
Scary guy. Well portrayed in voice.
"The old ways are dying. There are so many ways to interpret one's place in the universe. Who needs the wisdom of our ancestors?"
This is why I love Thane, he's such an interesting look at the *place* that philosophy and religion have in the far future. When faced with so many facts and answers that previously only existed in fiction or scripture, how does that affect one's faith? What is faith to a child who has all the answers to how the universe works at their fingertips? Does the vastness of the dark universe encourage worship or cause it to wither?
I appreciate his solitary, contemplative and thoughtful character. In my head canon he was raised in such a way in the Compact that he never got the opportunity to choose and has a great deal of cognitive dissonance. I desperately wish I had the ability to answer him when he says that a weapon doesn't choose - 'But Thane, you choose to take contracts." It isn't there and that's a shame. The questions of free will aren't complicated, but they are profound. Having sacrificed his youth and wife for his cultural identity, it's too late and even cruel to try to change his mind.
Named my cat after this dude. He just passed today. "Amonkira, Lord of Hunters, Grant my aim be steady, my heart be true, and should the worst come to pass, grant me forgiveness."
May you meet him at the shores
Goodbye Thane. Meet you across the sea.
The dialogue leading up to Thane's Loyalty Mission is some of the best in the entire series. "He hits me...'don't let them, stop them! why weren't you.'...Rain. It always rains on Kahje." There are few video games that can make me cry, Mass Effect can do it.
Absolutely. I think of Thane as a tragic bad guy... but his main redemption is that he did not raise Kolyat to be like him, which is what makes his loyalty mission so very extra tragic... that his son tries to be like him in order to connect to him, and Thane is extra appalled/guilty/horrified. Fail the mission and he will say "Entropy always wins" in the same accepting voice. "My wife is dead, my son is lost, my body's acts are tales never to be told. When I am gone it will be as though I had never lived. So I ask you, what is the point? The dark between the stars is enormous." So yeah. SAVE. KOLYAT. Not that he's going to have a happy ending but DAMN.
Yeah, I remember first finding that Failed Mission dialogue and having the same thoughts. At first I thought, hold on a second, how can you fail his mission? That's the only mission where you have to be actively trying to fail it though, (it's pretty much impossible to fail Legion's, Jacob's, Miranda's, Jack's, Mordin's, and Grunt's. And you only fail Samara or Tali's missions if you either want them to die, or are stupid) so, yeah. But jeez, his dialogue if you do fail it is probably the heaviest dialogue he has, for good reason.
It was really easy for me to fail Thane's mission - I got lost in the catwalks and the timer ran out - VERY frustrating. I have aphantasia - the name of the condition is new, they just proposed the term in 2015 as a real thing, it affects about 2% of the population. Aphantasia is an inability to create/retain mental images. I can see fine, but I can't build a map in my head. In a new place I'm disoriented and I stay that way until experience makes it possible for me to associate certain landmarks with other landmarks and move from one to the next in sequence. For me, learning a place is like learning music. If I repeat it (a place or music) enough, linear progression emerges through habit, that's how I navigate. In games without maps I find my way with pure stubborn and repetition. 'Okay, I THINK I've been down this hallway. Yup. Seven times. At least. Get ready for the eighth." Because I WILL... hit a dead end, turn around and go down the same hallway without remembering I just came from there. Eventually I will build a sense of 'no, I've definitely done this before and this is the Wrong Way' in a 'hotter/colder' sense, but I will never 'see' an internal map.
Those catwalks were impossible for me because the doors are all the same, there are no distinct landmarks and I had to pick a door/direction and hope I was right. I wasn't, couldn't backtrack, stayed lost as he kept asking me what the target was doing. When I play a game through the first time I try to own up to my mistakes and live with them. But when this happened to me (and him...) I shut the game down entirely and didn't consider going back to play it for a few years. I missed some stuff though, obviously. Glad I went back. But I still get a monstrously claustrophobic sense of doom from that mission and a years-long impression of failure on something so simple that most other folks can do - and something so important to Thane. "I have no business being Commander Shepard..."
"You're angry because I wasn't there when your mother died."
Sir, *I'm* angry because you weren't there in the doggone shot when you said that line
I did not expect to watch this entire thing, but the writing is so powerful and Thane's voice so alluring that I couldn't look away. Thank you for putting this together-- I loved being able to relive these beautiful moments. And thank you for your excellent voice work on the letter! It is wonderful to have those words brought to life.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you appreciated it. I had reviewed Thane's romance often with other UA-cam videos for reference because I was... busy with Garrus... and didn't think I could romance Thane and survive it. When I decided 'sure, get your heart ripped out, why not?' I got to the letter in game, not knowing it was coming, there was a lot of crying.
I came here to find the "grant me forgiveness" line during his loyalty mission because it gives me chills every time, and I was not disappointed
You have excellent taste in Thane speak. I always have to take him on Samara's Loyalty Mission for the ONE TIME he's allowed to make a joke. Garrus says "We're allowed to say no to suicidal orders? Why wasn't I told?" and Thane gets to snark back "That's about twice a day."
MUST. DO. EACH. TIME.
I am actively avoiding seeing several things I set out to see in a Legendary replay because I romanced the man in a fit of protracted masochism. But I don't want to do Priority:Citadel because even though I know what's coming, my Shepard doesn't and she is not going to take any of this well.
Thane is my favourite character of all times.
I never romanced Thane, but holy crap this is powerful and moving.
Thanks for watching. I started this playthrough to support some fanfiction. I was genuinely shocked and cried for a good long while when I came across the letter delivered after his death. I'd spoiled most of Thane's romance online but hadn't seen that part of it. Then a somewhat vague and sketchy character became someone with a deep soul of tragic romance. So I wrote a few hundred thousand words on that, good job whoever wrote that letter!
I still get misty-eyed every time I replay 3 thanks to this lovely, lovely man...
SO much weeping.
I just realized I can see his pupils when he has the memories
WELP. Guess I'm playing the Trilogy again... for the 8th time at least.
I just did myself a few months ago. Spoiler alert: Still good.
R.I.P Thane and Legion
And Mordin.
And captain Anderson
Many thanks for making this! I was shocked with the email read out loud. An awesome video for a fantastic character.
You are so welcome. I was shocked too when I got it. Powerful and often unmentioned.
@@recidivaquixotic7207wow that was a feature? I honestly thought you had read it out loud lol. That is fascinating.
@@lukeemberson5309 Hah! No, it wasn't a feature. That was me reading it out loud. I mean that I did a lot of UA-cam mining for content for research for fanfiction pieces. When I did a canon runthrough myself after thinking I had seen everything I needed to see about Thane, that happened. It's not voiced. I really, really wish it had been.
I play the drell infiltrator in honor of thane
It's good to see Thane getting some memorializing attention. I have a rough time with how he was written and the fact that in ME3 you have to BUY content to even acknowledge that the guy's dead... and what's with the cricket thing?! So yeah, I had to write different stuff 'cause Thane deserves some honor :)
I even use a melee build and a phalanx since that's what he used against kai leng, feels fitting and fits his playstyle lol. and even if you have to buy the content, citadel is still phenomenal
CItadel is still my absolute favorite of all game expansions and it's very much where my love of the game comes from, getting to that point. I stalled a lot on getting through the franchise for lots of reasons, but Citadel is a fantastic payoff for the investment. It's always interesting for me to see stuff Thane can do in cutscenes... kill four people in seconds, disappear entirely (whereas only Kasumi can stealth as a skill)... sorta like Jack being able to take down several mechs singlehandledly while barely thawed out. In reality, with me trying to get through an Insanity run through - I know EVERYONE dies fast. EVERYONE. And these guys CANNOT stay in cover to save my (or their) lives, but I prefer to excuse the game AI and grant them max badassery points and then watch them get drunk and silly. Though I did play a Garrus-Centric insanity runthrough where he died so often that when I went to go get him in ME3 and he said "I'm hard to kill, you know that" I actually laughed out loud. Now i have a Garrus Funko Pop on top of my desktop that falls over all the time because he's too top heavy. My husband has offered to make me a base for him so he'll stand up straight and be more stable, but for me it's just more endearing that once a week I have to pick him up. "Sorry, Garrus. It's traditional that you fall over."
33:07 I absolutely love assassins who pray before doing a job. They are so fucking badass.
And it's not at all about looking so pretty standing there like that. Nope. Nothing like that. All spiritual. With leather. And being able to inexplicably disappear.
Am I the only one that gets enough supplies to fix Sheppard's face when playing Renegade style in ME2?
I do, but that's Ruth. She liked scaring people with them and Thane found them to be Drell-like and vibrant.
@@recidivaquixotic7207 Ah, you give backstories and personalities to your Shep builds! I see. I respect that.
My own personal favorite (of my own plays that is) was Robert, I gave him a Ruthless background, but play him as Paragon. My story was that he feels constant remorse and has nightmares every day for what happened on Torfan all those years ago, and is trying to make up for it one day at a time, hoping to someday forgive himself (hence why I play him as Paragon)
@@CSLucasEpic Yes, I wrote a bunch of fics, so I had a bunch of different Shepards. Since two of my fics were canon-compliant, Ruth is the Shepard from 'Fault Lines' and yeah, she's pretty happy with her scars. My Garrus playthrough videos are for a canon-compliant Paragon. Thane needed a Renegade so it's a lying-liars-who-lie sorta love story. I don't really like the Renegade options, but if you're going for sheer tragedy, Thane's the way to go.
could this be krios's hanar name? from mass effect wiki "He stalked his prey from afar and an opportunity presented itself when she walked into a bar." its poetic
Omfg I literally cried for 5 days after he died in my game. Like if I were playing the game, or even just driving around, I would think about it and start crying. I hadn't watched any of these videos first so I didn't even know it was coming. FUCK BIOWARE !!!! Tbh I genuinely thought that we would end up finding a cure for Thane. Ugh. Even now rewatching this I'm about to cry!! 😭 Best romance/character in the game by far!!! Rip bae ❤️❤️😞
He deserved sooooo much better. Considering I've written him now in four relationships and cured Kepral's twice... yeah, I have done SO much crying over the man. Totally worth it. Thane angst has enriched my life!
krios is in danger actually there to hunt shepard but sees she is warm like the sun. krios' son is actually his hanar handler who is hunting him bc he is retired and a loose end
meanwhile if you romanced jacob ....
Yanno, I've heard you can, and then I heard he takes off. So... dying snake guy still less awkward than that conversation.
THE PRIZE
No wonder you wrote such fantastic stories around him.
Thank you! In all the iterations that I wrote with Thane, the most evocative opportunity to begin with was the ability to punch him vicariously. Trying to put together the patchwork of lore and motivation into a truly loved and complicated man resulted in having him stick around as my own personal devil's advocate. Whether it's a real life dilemma or a plot hole, he's always there for me to let me know when and where I'm not seeing the whole picture. Now he's a permanent and daily voice in my head, whether he's telling me my taste in clothes is egregious and making me want to punch him (again, always), at which he smirks, or helping me untangle skeins of complicated thought, at which he smirks also. He knows I love him. Hard fought and appreciated and played out every day in argument, exasperation and appreciation of a truly loved and complicated man.
Thane is such an awesome assassin he even goes invisible. Bailey must be an awesome C-Sec officer to do the same LOL.
Cracked me up when I recorded it and that bug came up. I decided it was a feature.
@@recidivaquixotic7207 I needed that laugh even though I know it was meant to be a serious more somber moment lol. Playing ME for the first time and am doing three different playt throughs for romances fot Kaidan, Garrus, and Thane lol,
@@turquesa_8056 Good luck! Garrus gets best romance overall just because of the way the game is structured and the voice actor. Kaidan is problematic in lots of ways because of the way ME2 is put together. Thane wins the 'this will break your heart into itsy bitsy pieces' award. Unfortunately Thane's romance is shortchanged and the writing severely inconsistent. Thus fan fiction!
@@recidivaquixotic7207 Thanks! I should look up the fan fiction.
the moment the spectre killed in front of krios the spectre became an asset
krios is now being investigated for nuclear war crimes
In my 1st femshep play through I romances kaiden in me1 so after steps death and the horizon incident she was upset how kaiden reacted to her and found solace in thane romancing him but during the suicide mission thane died from swarmers messing shep up inside in me3 she ended up getting back with kaiden who survived priority earth along side other members
Heartbreaking. I romanced Kaiden my first play through and got him vaporized RIGHT at the end. All other playthroughs involved Garrus and getting a high war rating.
Ugh renegade Shepard. ..
Renegade Shepard holds a hard spot on my heart. I can't really inflict a Renegade on Garrus, so Thane's the man.
His story was always awasome. But how romanced Thane!!
Gross!
Like a flower, at first wilted but when watered it could bloom again. Alas, like dust in the wind, all must end as all things begin. From nothing they came, from nothing they return.
Fiction is as real to us as reality. Thane Krios is an idea of a person, a beautiful nostalgic person. He may not he physical, but he feels real and that's all we need. Rest in peace, Thane Krios.
Thane has absolutely inspired from the bare bones of a flawed and compelling character. After investing a few hundred hours into thinking about the guy and talking to different iterations of him through my fanfiction, he's a permanent addition to my daily mindset. He has helped me refine what I believe is of value in my life, what we fight for, what we live for, what regret and guilt can destroy and what faith and effort can build. My version of him is a pretty bad guy who wants to be good but doesn't necessarily succeed. He needs love and care more than most, and for that reason, I want to give it. While facepalming. Rest in peace. Thank you for inspiring me to cure Kepral's, make you truly evil, make you truly good, make you flawed and fixed, broken and redeemed, a God and a man. From nothing he came, and as he wished to be everything, that desire created something that never was before.
@@recidivaquixotic7207 Thank you for this wonderful reply. I didn't expect to provoke such a response from the creator of this tribute! He truly is a beautiful character and I am so thankful we were able to experience him in full for all he was.
I also romanced with Thane with my Paragon Femshep. He is a very good romance option besides Garrus. ^_^
its clear thanes real name is nassana or anassan or assasin .. she speaks in third person using reverse psychology.. gotta love it drizzy voz.. genius jay z voz working for Nassa or Nasa not the nsa or cia.. i see 7.12 too.. ah.. i cee.. another nassana.. i see the W in kepral .. interesing pal..pentagon+reagonomics 55*38 = communications about keypal nsa codebreaker syndrome.. ohh kolyat thane assana ariana krios syndrome.. how delicious.. ah the heavynees.. i feel like im an og krios sometimes heh
The only romance I support dying at the end of the game...so you are with him at the shore.
And Now I'm crying
THE LETTER! Thane, you kill people and if they're not dead, you make them cry.
This is so sad EDI play despacito.
In the dictionary under "Tragic" there's a picture of him.
take apart the dr system. count em three drells at minimu og still rising
That last conversation before the Earth Mission make me teary eye. Did you read the message or that's an in-game voice?
This romance makes me weep. So much. That's me reading the letter, I didn't know it existed until I did the romance for myself and then I got the letter and cried more, so I read it because... why not cry more in the future too?
True, very true. It was an awesome vid. The invisibility glitch was funny
The glitch cracked me up. They never explain his ability to suddenly disappear and he can't use it in a fight like Kasumi... but it's obviously canon because even his son can't find him metaphorically or literally. Poor Thane, victim of his own awesomeness.
LOL!
I, a red blooded male, weep for that romance as well. I see what women see in the Garrus romance, but Thane stirs something in me. It's special. Thanks for narrating.
the drell have a hidden code name for spectres.. just listen
Love the close ups
Thane reminds me of Riddick in Assault On Dark Athena.
I think of Riddick as someone who is somewhere laughing at the circumstances he's in and the people he meets. Thane's not big on outward laughter, but the degree of metaphoric eye rolling he's too polite to display has the same vibe.
i think if you do everything paragon yu can save krios from death
35:56 Didn't know they have helicopters on the citadel.
They definitely have rocket ships and they can get the spinny light thing pretty easily. They have to hire a vorcha to make the siren noise though. Citadel Union Rules. They couldn't hit Thane. Too pretty.
I wish I knew how they got that modulation effect on his voice. :-/
Me too! With Garrus also, Audacity filter how-to please!
krios worka for the pentagon..
did he just say yankeewhite!!?? sija someday ill tell yw - it means
Did i just make it up or does he say a line which is like 'my people have a word for when the mind has accepted death and the body is just catching up'?
If it exists, I don't think I've triggered that option and I don't recall the word. The Drell language wiki entry only has a few words - Siha, drala'fa, tu'fira and Sere.
Dammit. I'll try and look more. Thanks though
Rock Dweller depression. it's called chronic depression.
Jessica Oudbier well yeah i know that. Was going to send it to my friend as part of a depression chat. But i swear there was a quote like that and i was just trying to fine it. I might replay 2 and look myself
I'm doing the same thing. I thought it was pithy because I've hit a spot of depression myself. Hey, wanna start a new religion based entirely on Thane? Thanism? Kriosian?

#tooTheMemOrRise
I actually couldn't watch the romance scenes because this Shepard looks like Frankenstein's monster
Why did you take the bad dialogue options in the beginning :'(
I have written and recorded fan faction - so this Shepard with Thane corresponds to my story "Fault Lines." That Shepard, Ruth, is renegade. In my world, Thane is a Bad Guy. He's urbanely and charmingly a well-trained liar. If and when he's with a straight up paragon, he manages to lie to her effectively and she believes it. In "Fault Lines" I gave him a deeply suspicious Shepard who is a Bad Woman. That way they could be on even footing and it could be love and not a series of lies. It was still a series of lies, but that's how bad guys go. She also punches him when he lets himself get stabbed because she knows he didn't have to do it that way and she'd just watched theatrical suicide. He gets it, he's into her reasons for doing things and that she's right. Aaaand now I've made myself cry again. My Thane is complicated and I cannot express how much I love that guy, though I've put about a million words into it.
@@recidivaquixotic7207 Haha alright, gotcha! He definitely is a complicated guy in your fanfic lol. Thanks for explaining though
@GrapeSkoda lmao nah not really, was fun to read
Anyone here a JoJo fan? I always imagine White Snake from part 6 speaking like Thane.

Why is Thane invisible at around 35:00....
Hah! I have no idea. It's a glitch that happened when I was recording. I at first thought... what the hell? Then I thought I'd have to go back and redo the mission. Out of a combination of laziness and sense of humor I figured "Ironically still an absent father' and kept it as a unique happenstance of gameplay that was in character, what with Thane being Thane.

The writing in the third game wasn't as good as the second.
18:14 Ugly creature
Thane as Dad... I can't forgive him. I can't really understand why Kolyat would want anything to do with him. I had to try very hard as an author to get in his head and make up reasons why someone might do that... but I'm the sort of person that even thinks the Buddha was a deadbeat dad. "You couldn't find eternal Nirvana at some other point in your reincarnation cycle? Say when you didn't have an infant son?!" I still wrote Thane as a damaged bad guy that's trying very hard to be a good guy (or has just decided 'screw that' and goes full bore evil) but his life choices make me facepalm and then wanna slap him. Mostly I have to write him getting slapped a lot and having him say "Yeah, that's fair..." to have all that much sympathy. "Okay, have you learned a lesson? PLEASE?"
"no" + "charrrrge" = "no" + "now / "!t*funnn" yo masseffect goes flubbn in bolo
