Except we already know Doug's story. He worked for Aperture, and was the only one to survive GLaDOS's neurotoxin when she was activated. He moved Chell to the top of the test subject list, and then just hid. That's the entirety of his story.
Actually, it's not artificial consciousness. It's brain mapping. Aperture didn't create GLaDOS, they uploaded Caroline. They had already created many forms of AI even with personalities and voices. GLaDOS isn't a core, she's a person without a human body.
No, Caroline is just a part of GLaDOS's AI. And there is a différence between making an AI and making an AI with à consciousness. The cores were basically byproducts of the research made to create GLaDOS since they were initially made to regulate her. Other robots like turrets aren't conscious. I believe the coop robots are though, but they were made after GLaDOS. At least this is my opinion.
i know, i just love how accurate the short film is to the source material. These guys really should do more with the half life/portal universe, maybe a series on Black Mesa scientists with aperture being mentioned here and there. :)
I like the companion cube as it is, as it gives it more of a phillosophical meaning, an also refers to the schizophrenia of Rattmann causing it to talk.

I wonder what genre this music is? I know it's techno of some kind, but it seems to be more of a "reflective" type of techno. Definitely makes me feel emotions that other kinds of techno do not.
this video is one of the only things that brings me out of a panic attack. it's a good tool to put things into perspective, and get my mind going on something other than my current existence. The music is so beautifully painful that it brings me to another place. like a dream. thank you to everyone who worked on this project. well done.
This answers a lot of the questions that have burned at me since I played portal 2, such as: *Why did only Chell survive? Surely if she survived on her own, someone else did. (Answer: Rattman saved her) *How and where and why did Rattman know to write those things on the walls? Surely another scientist would have known as well if they were still alive. (Answer: only Rattman survived) *Where did Rattman go? {I had always assumed that he was still alive, that he was watching you, maybe when the panels on the wall moved, he was there, looking after you} If you really think about it, the story of Rattman and all of Aperture science, goes deeper than you will ever know.
I have another question when chell defeated glados and was being dragged away by a party escort bot y couldn't he just snatch chell away and run away from the bot
Found this again after hearing a tiktok that used the song in the beginning... Man... even 8 years later, it's still such a beautiful video. The story of Rattman is so bitter sweet... Why has valve not taken advantage of his story and given us a prequel/side story game or even made something like this into a full on movie?!
if the creators of portal at valve have seen some of the videos they have inspired and the talented film makers that have created them i hope they feel proud of what they have done this is one of the best games created with a amazing plot and back story cant wait till conversion
This is legitimately one of the best fanmade... Well, fanmade things ever. It's clear that a lot of effort and time went into every aspect of the film, from the props to the overall theme of the piece. The editing was superb and the voice acting was spot-on and really displays how the Portal series is more than meets the eye.
Here I am again. Having a giant anxiety attack and in big need of watching this video with my sound canceling headphones. Every sound Color The music His facial expression. The lights Everything here helps me direct my anxiety to the right place, and turn my brain onto something else.

A Trusted Friend In Science™ well there is gonna be another portal but under a different name. It will show what happened between the 2 parts of portal and supposedly it will be a F2P
That was pretty good, it really brought the comic to life, the only thing is that it was painfully obvious that the Companion Cube was made out of cardboard. And I don't care if it did kind of appear like that in the comic, you COULD have something that didn't look like a cardboard box, or at least covered it in a flat material that was flat so it looked at least somewhat metallic.
Weird. It's almost as if it was supposed to look handmade. Like, if Doug had made it from a box out of loneliness and painted it. He even strung a rope through it to carry on his back at one point. And we thought we could fool you all. If only it were an deliberate choice of artistic license as if to make somebody say 'It's painfully obvious that it was made out of cardboard.' Better luck next time, I suppose.
And, OMG 4:37 its ziprasidone - a drug for schisophrenia and psychotic reactions! O.o this is why the cube didn't answer Doug at "Are there any turrets?"
Fantastic movie making skills! Probably the best short film I've ever seen and what makes it better is that its based on one of my favorite topics! Good job Synthetic PictureHaus keep up the amazing work!
Still, after all this time, this is still the best portal short film out there. You stick so well to the script and it's just perfect!! I love this Doug too, though I got the impression he was older in the comic (when he had the beard anyway). Love it!
PickChickMC i agree i believe it's her father also, mostly because it shows in portal 2 chell made one of the bring your daughter to work day projects, and it says she used her dad's contraption and the contraption and the aperture science logo meaning her dad had to be one of the employees
But i also believe that she was adopted by Ratman and her first parents were cave johnson and caroline think about it the turret song talks about chell being caroline's baby and before you say "Thats impossible chell would be dead" remember chell was in stasis "She will be dead and alive untill someone opens the box"
Both of those theories are really farfetched. Doug wasn't really intent on keeping Chell alive, in fact, at the end of the first Portal game, Doug almost abandoned Chell. He just decided to move her to the top of the list because her profile said she was extremely resilient, so Doug figured that Chell was the best chance at defeating GLaDOS. As for the theory that she is Cave and Caroline's son: Cave died before Chell was born, or she was really young when Cave died. Cave died sometime in the 80's, and Chell was presumably less than 10 during the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, which occurred sometime in the 90's. Which means when Chell was born, Cave was either already dead, or somewhere older than 60 and about to die.
I love it! But I was hoping they'd pan over to Chell's files where it would have given "Doesn't give up. Ever." And a Binary Code of "The Cake is a Lie." It was amazing, tho. Loved every bit of it.
I love how this was done! I love how pretty accurate it is to the comic. Anyone who hasn't read the comic, and is a portal fan, the comic is the story in between portal 1 and portal 2. I loooove the comic.
This is truly spectacular. I just love everything about it. The only problem i had with it was a small one and that is I sort of feel that the companion cube can speak not because it's an AI. But more because Doug's schizophrenia makes him imagine that the cube can speak. Or Game Theory's theory that the cubes are actually stuffed with other test subjects.

This short film is one of the best I've seen. I love how you kept with the original comic yet shortened it a little. Beautiful ,simply the best I've seen...
I liked this a lot. My biggest issue was the man who portrayed Doug Rattman, because he has this weird way of being both over the top and under the bottom in his acting. But overall a fantastic short.
***** Which is why there should be. I think so, at least. Video games have them. Some movies do too, I believe. I really like this video. It is a shame you dropped a lot of lines from the comic. Furthermore, you should have used some footage from the game. Particularly when RatMann ponders about the facility or when Glados is talking.
getwilly1 I actually doubt it. I think he died BUT you hear his ghost in that den. I say this because The audio track that plays in that room is called "Ghost of Rattman" And the voices are part of the track so... It possibly could be Rattman's ghost... (Plus he isnt behind any walls in the room, i made sure by noclipping...)
Calloffish15 First of all I highly doubt that valve would do something as stupid as saying that Rattman died and became a ghost. Second of all OBVIOUSLY you didnt see him by nocliping you're not meant to see him.
getwilly1 It was just a theory since no one actually knows. It has facts supporting it SO i just said that so i could share my idea/theory. You could be right also. ;)
7:50 "They'll never see me behind this thin post!" Also, thought this was just okay. The comic version had much more depth to it as far as his schizophrenia and his relationship with the Companion Cube, specifically how his taking of the pills slowly fades the cube's "personality" until it becomes an inanimate object again. Also, the comic gave the impression that the cube was a female to Doug, in that it's colored completely pink (rather than just the hearts) and he tells it "I'll always need you". I could be misinterpreting that, but that's how it came off to me. The only difference with that is that if he's in love with the cube, it gives more depth behind his decision to take his pills, knowing he may never talk to his cube again. Then there's the actual cube itself in this video. Very poorly done, but oh well. This video is missing a few elements from the comic, but these were pretty minor things.
Its a short film for a reason. If they had more time on their hands to increase the lenght of the video to further the relationship, they would have included it
Jason Phillips Sorry, but I don't think it being a short film is an excuse. It was more in the directing than the length. This video included pretty much everything from the comic, just wasn't portrayed well enough in my opinion. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, I'm giving my constructive criticism as to how I feel it could have been better.
I'd like to sincerely apologize on behalf of the author by putting all this time, effort, and work on what likely is a fairly small budget to entertain their viewers.
An don't complain there's things missing from the comic. Have you ever seen a movie remake of a book? Key word: remake. It doesn't have to be an exact copy of the comic.
***** "dead and alive until someone opens the box" is a reference to Schrödinger's cat and quantum mechanics. Schrödinger placed his cat in a box with a deadly gas capsule. The capsule had a 50% chance of opening and killing the cat. Schrödinger explained that because we can't see the cat in the closed box, we can't know if the cat is dead or alive. Therefore, the cat is both alive *and* dead at the same time until observed. The cat is in a "super position" of all possibilities. He then opened the box, and found his cat was still alive. He explained that all existing possibilities prior to opening the box collapse, presenting the only possibility left: The cat is alive. That is the basis of quantum theory, and helped shed new light on a lot of problems. The most known one being: Light is both a particle and a wave, until you observe it.
francis madden The companion cube is designed to look horrible, it's Doug Rattman's cardboard recreation of the actual companion cube. He lost his real one so he made a fake one.
It really is just so amazing. I find myself holding my breath the entire time I'm watching this. I do love the character of Doug Ratman, especially since he takes medication for a psychological disease and look what he's able to accomplish! I take medication too, though not for schizophrenia. But it kinda makes me feel like I could be a hero too. :)
its really cool that you guys take the time to make these Aperture Science videos. its like, you guys make so good videos about it, why take the time to make your own? they are just so perfect in a lot of aspects.
Portal: The prequel should be made, where you play as Doug Rattman

Woah, it's so cool to see the comic come to life. Great job :)
And since I first watched this, the first quote has become my favorite quote of all time.
PickChickMC i agree i believe it's her father also, mostly because it shows in portal 2 chell made one of the bring your daughter to work day projects, and it says she used her dad's contraption and the contraption and the aperture science logo meaning her dad had to be one of the employees
Exactly. Plenty of evidence, that would explain why he's so determined to save Chell only.

It takes a lot more bullets to kill Chell...
¿Alguien aquí habla español?. Digo se mucho español, pero me gustaría hablar con alguien.
That's some fantastic original soundtrack, I wish you'd release it separately
rattman still alive?
Since you could hear him rambling when you go in one of his dens in Portal 2 i would say so.
getwilly1 I actually doubt it. I think he died BUT you hear his ghost in that den. I say this because The audio track that plays in that room is called "Ghost of Rattman" And the voices are part of the track so... It possibly could be Rattman's ghost... (Plus he isnt behind any walls in the room, i made sure by noclipping...)
Calloffish15
First of all I highly doubt that valve would do something as stupid as saying that Rattman died and became a ghost. Second of all OBVIOUSLY you didnt see him by nocliping you're not meant to see him.
getwilly1 It was just a theory since no one actually knows. It has facts supporting it SO i just said that so i could share my idea/theory. You could be right also. ;)
I think just the fact that you can hear him speaking is proof enough o_O
4:40 PILLS HERE!
Low-key comfort short film
7:50 "They'll never see me behind this thin post!"
Also, thought this was just okay.
I agree. It didn't include everything I quite expected, and the depth in the comic wasn't portrayed as well as it was here. Oh well.
I believe the quote, "both dead and alive until someone opens the box," is referring to the companion cube.
Not Chell.
Read the Lab Ratt comic it explains it
It also could be a reference to the Schrodinger's Cat paradox
Eric Eklund it is.
The most known one being: Light is both a particle and a wave, until you observe it.
woah
One word to describe this. Beautiful.
film was great. acting was meh, but for a fan short film this was really good.
Everything 9/10 but the companion cube -2/10
francis madden
The companion cube is designed to look horrible, it's Doug Rattman's cardboard recreation of the actual companion cube. He lost his real one so he made a fake one.
QsfProductions Games Machinimas And More!
... oh well in that case 10/10
He made the Companion himself out of cardboard this channel shows it
It really is just so amazing. I find myself holding my breath the entire time I'm watching this. I do love the character of Doug Ratman, especially since he takes medication for a psychological disease and look what he's able to accomplish! I take medication too, though not for schizophrenia. But it kinda makes me feel like I could be a hero too. :)
THIS IS WRONG CAVE JOHNSON DIED BEFORE she WAS PUT IN GLADOS ORIGINALY CAVE WOULDVE BEEN IN GLADOS BUT HE DIED BEFORE IT HAPPENED SO THAT RUINED THIS!
Actually if you read the comic at all, you'd know that it was a pre-recorded message. You're welcome.
The recording states that the message said is pre-recorded. Listen more closely.
Idiot, If You Lisent Closely After He Said Get Back To Work... "...Get back to WORK! *_This Was A Pre Recorded Message_* " Ugh
SamTEG Woodruff Fuck you
THE COMPANION CUBE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GIRL!!!!
I don't think it ever stated specifically whether it was or not but I pictured it as a girl too.
rattman constantly said she and her in the comics when he was talking about the cube
Really? Huh. Guess I haven't read it in a while. Well they messed up there then.
Sir Boom™ easily fixed, they can just redub :D its not like they have to sync up lip movement lol
ya XD
This is amazing. I am baffled by it's magnificence. I wish I could hit the like button a million times over.
So bad(78%) the translate to spanish(soy peruano)
9Another6 lo que es mala es la sincronización... la traducción está bastante bien.
its really cool that you guys take the time to make these Aperture Science videos.
its like, you guys make so good videos about it, why take the time to make your own? they are just so perfect in a lot of aspects.
