- Making a hammer from Damascus steel from self-tapping screws.

On my patreon page, I began to explain the processes and secrets of my work. Topics already covered:
1. Why do I add pepper to container Damascus steel.
2. What do I sprinkle? Flux and its composition.
3. How do I remove the container from the workpiece (container Damascus steel).
4. Why am I drilling a hole in a container.
5. Why do I sweep away the dross from the anvil with my hand.
6. Why do I first forge some blanks on a tree.

For those who don't know, pepper is used to season the metal.
Ahhhhh, makes sense!!!
Thanks for that info, I was going crazy trying to look it up.
Ahhh, for those that like their metal spicy! I like some lemon grass and arugula with my metal.
This is my favorite cooking show.
I suspect it is either to add carbon and/or burn off the oxygen inside the welded shut “container” he later discards. He is after all “hammer welding” and other than certain metals like platinum, oxidation is undesireable.
He really just hammered a screw with a hammer made of screws.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
No no , try this ... Shows him a screwdriver , comes back with a hammer made of screwdriver .
Next he needs to forge a screwdriver made of nails, and use it to screw in a nail.
@@exploreadventure258 then hammer in the screwdriver with the screwhammer.
"Hammering a screw" is cursed in itself.
Reminds me of a joke. An apprentice carpenter is caught driving screws in with a hammer. The supervisor asks him, "Dummy, don't you know what a screwdriver is for?" He replies "Sure boss, I use it to back it out when I bend one".
I often find myself watching your videos and saying I have to try that. I started forging a little while ago and I often look to you for inspiration. I love the fact that most of your videos use materials I have laying around my shop, and though my end results never turn out as nice as yours do it is an extremely cheep way for me to practice and perfect myself in the craft. I thank you sir for providing inspiration and guidance not only through your videos but my questions that you have answered your comments section before.

People call a hammer an Italian screwdriver. Maybe it's a Ukrainian one as well.
More like *Nut crack*
😂😂
I have never seen anyone remove a canister that way. That is incredible.
Never seen anyone make it look so easy on Forged in Fire, which admittedly is my only exposure to blacksmithing and the only reason I know what canister Damascus is.
He didn't fill around the screws with any powdered steel so it was just open airspace in there around the billet.
@@leviacree4533 yeah when he put the call on I was like "wait, no powdered steel 🤔🤨...?"
Whats the pepper for?
@@slofobra4966 Spicy in Russian or Ukrainian or wherever Shurap is from sounds very close to their word for "sharp". He makes a lot of blades so adding "spicy" to his work is like an offering to the gods to put sharpness into his work. It's a joke, but he takes it seriously.
That was without a doubt the slickest removal of a canister that I've ever seen.

I know the spicy sharpness thing is a joke, but he treats it like a ritual. It's a serious offering to the forge gods.
there are strong old traditions of forging in Ukraine with its own rutuals.
I know about that joke too but I really think there's another reason like maybe the oils help the can not stick I wish he would answer if there's another reason or not

Everytime I watch these vids I just think back to all those Forged in Fire contestants who dreaded using canisters
This guy legit would come up on them and say "heh... Amateurs."
Than you realize they have a couple hours to do ut
Honestly, want to see it tested in “Forged in Fire” fashion to see how it’d hold up
I have never seen a canister come off so clean and easily in forged in fire. Is that some sort of graphite paste used to coat the inside first?.
Awesome work, I love how well the canister released. And the end result is super unique I love it
That is so cool! Especially how solid and sound it turned out.
Plus removal of the canister was awesome! Everyone struggles with removing the canister.
Other smiths struggle to make metal stick together, this guy uses metal not sticking in his craft. Next level.
That is the fist time I've ever seen anyone take the canister off like that. I only hope I'm half as good as him one day.
@@3amForge I bet it has something to do with what he painted the inside of the canister with.
It sure wasn't titanium dioxide ( liquid paper ) as is commonly seen in canister forging.

My four year old son was watching this with me - he says “Good job man!”
Watching you drive screws with a hammer made from screws, reminds me of my grandfather. “Screw drivers are for taking screws out!” While driving screws with a hammer.
Узор выглядит как саморезы, вырывающиеся из чистилища))
Half way through, and I'd forgotten the title - this is a weird knife Dmitry.
Lovely hammer - very impressed, as always.

The section cut off can still be used as part of a blade though, wonder how a blade made from all the scrap pieces of previous projects will look, with different patterns showing up along it.
@@SeanBZA If anyone can pull off such a piece it'd be Dmitry/Shurap.
Maybe something with a wide, flat blade like a Bowie knife, which would be perfect for showing off the different patterns.
“I have no screwdriver to drive in these screws, so I'll use a hammer instead. Damn, I have no hammer… but I do have screws, and a forge!”

There’s a proverb in this;

Hammering in screws was one of the things I've always thought about but never seen, until now
Some blacksmiths spend an hour plus grinding away the canister from the billet, Shurap just effortlessly pops it off in one piece. He’s beyond the point of mastering his craft!

Am I weird because your sense of humour is appealing to me ? Great screw hammer 🔨
My grandpa always said that “Hammers are for driving screws, screws “drivers” are for removing them”
Nice to see that in practice.
No! You should never hammer a screw into wood. The threads shear the wood and compromise the joint strength. Always drill a small pilot hole depending on wood type and screw the screw into wood for best strength.
