It’s been a long while since I’ve seen someone talk about Ultimate Muscle. I watched that show regularly as a kid, even without knowing its history in Japan and the vintage toy mini figure toy line I enjoyed it. It’s interesting to see how it got edited by 4Kids, with it looking like they kept the spirit of the original dub in a way. Looks better than the other weird dubs they’ve done, that’s for sure. I’m curious to see you tackle that show some more.
There's a video showing script changes in Kinnuku Mantaro vs Kinniku Suguru. In English, Mantaro talks about how his dad said that he has to be the hero now, or something like that. In Japanese, Mantaro is technical about Suguru's shortcomings.
If anyone's read the manga, there's no overstating what a bloodbath it can be. People who watched the anime would remember Kid Muscle peeing a massive puddle in the middle of the ring when he fought against Dial-Bolic. It scared him off, and Kid realized he was afraid of getting wet, being mostly electronic. In the manga, Dial-Bolic actually slapped him so hard and frequently, it was a pool of BLOOD. He actually passed out from bloodloss after the fight.
Kid winning due to being so scared that he peed himself and the liquid scared dial bolic just fits kid muscle much more as a character. Terrified but finds a way to win through his own fear.

I think the global appeal was so that it wouldn't seem like you're watching a "Japanese" show. Which is strange because the lyrics of the intro they go out of their way to point out that the heroes come from "different planets and different nations" to celebrate diversity. There is even the chojin crown saga where the dub doesn't bother hiding the fact each wrestler is representing their home country just like the real Olympics. It's a weird habit that American dubs do to try and pretend like things aren't happening in Japan.

Ultimate Muscle is one of the few dubs they actually got right. The cheesy dialogue and over-the-top voice acting was actually fitting given the nature of the series. Kinnikuman Nisei was already toned down for kids (it was never meant to be a kid's show in the first place) so the job was done for them.
This show was hilarious to me as a child, I re-discovered it a couple of years ago. The manga, as well as the original series, are honestly so amazing, in my opinion.

Unsubstantiated rumor, the actual reason is that anime studios have copies of the anime at several stages of production, things like signage and lettering are left out when the studio sells a show to a foreign distributor in order to make it easier to localize. 4Kids is just lazy, for not placing something culturally relevant in the blank spaces
One of 3 reasons I remember 4KIDS not being good despite having good voice actors reworked rewrote and edited weird especially when I finally watched a subtitled episode and had 2 of the Mangas

ULTIMATE MUSCLE FOR GC IS MY SHHHIIITTT!! I beat it last summer got all the characters and know all the moves, super fun game my only complaint is no training mode you just have to figure the game out yourself lol

Man it's been forever since I've seen Ultimate Muscle, I miss this show. However there are things 4Kids edited that didn't make sense. For instance I feel Mince (Meat's dad) didn't survive Bone Cold's attack. Also I have a feeling that those women Terry was hanging around with on the beach weren't his sisters. I enjoyed some of the zaniness it had, but it wasn't without its faults, and this video covers what I mean.
Yeah mince died. The dub had a hard timing hiding it because mine is later seen as a sort of force ghost along with another character who died. There is nothing in the original story about terry having sisters that seems to be a typical dub change to tone down any gender mixing or relationship implications (despite kid trying to go on a date with Roxanne and going googly eyed over her in just about every episode).

I loved Ultimate Muscle as a kid. Like I saw someone else on youtube say the appeal was that rather than a lot of cartoons or anime at the time having some toy tie-in (Yugioh cards, beyblades, Pokemon etc etc) this was just a bunch of dudes fighting. Nothing much better than that. I fully plan on watching the original japanese version sometime.

Why not a edit change, this is more of a line change. Kid Muscle's first opponent is Addversarious (Blood Killer in the original). He can extend the religious cross symbol on his chest outward to crush enemies. To get around mentioning the religious cross, they basically made him the math guy, and it was a + sign that that is coming out of his chest (despite it clearly looking like a †).
@@X2011racer The manga wasn't a failure in japan, the problem is that by the time were the anime was still broadcasted the manga was still running, and the author was taking too long to go off some arcs, in fact the manga was still on the new choujin olympics where Mars got his face ripped by mammothman and seisuchin's fiber optic bomb. Also the anime ran its total episodes in japan as the western release, they decided to end with Kid winning against kevin, and end the anime with the 2nd movie with Kid defeating Baron Maxmillian and the d.M.p for good. it became a cult following anime, to the point the manga received a remake later on to stich all details and give a proper ending.

Basically, the kanji for the word "baka" means "horse and deer". That means someone who's quick-witted (like a horse) can somehow irritate others (like how deer hit hard with their antlers).
I remember crying as a kid when I saw scary Japanese things “MOMMY MOMMY WHY ARE THOSE JELLY DONUTS MADE OF RICE!?” I will never forgive weaboos for what they did to me.
And when the three girls are kidnapped and held hostage in cages the outfits they were put in was made to be less revealing, because in the original Japanese they were dressed in ragged bikinis.

I've never understood 4Kids removing English text. Sure, it made sense to remove card text in Yu-Gi-Oh in order to adhere to FCC regulations regarding advertisements, but when you have a sign that doesn't show any vulgarities and doesn't refer to a character by a different name, what's the point?
Late to the party, but I would say it's not lost media tho it's almost. There are only 2 torrent links to download the full japanese series (no subs) in one site, and despite it having like one seed, they still work. Downloaded the second part yesterday as it's what I was missing.

The main problem I have is everytime someone gets punched or hit, there is a bright white flash or cutaway and it gets really annoying.

The commissioned season is exclusive to 4Kids. The anime was canceled in Japan due to poor viewer count along with the Manga being a failure.

They did it so it would be easier for international dubs based on their version of the show to be made.
It's insane that they go out of their way to censor things, but rename a guy Dik Dik Van Dik.
Basically, the kanji for the word "baka" means "horse and deer". That means someone who's quick-witted (like a horse) can somehow irritate others (like how deer hit hard with their antlers).
Please do 4kids Shaman King next in honor of the reboot going to netflix...

thank you for this amazing breakdown. lets be honest - the american version actually imrpoved the anime. if they did an exact adaptation it wouldn't be as liked. the ultimate collection dvd for the series just got released. and i hear there's a animatted remake for the original series is coming.

I've never understood 4Kids removing English text. Sure, it made sense to remove card text in Yu-Gi-Oh in order to adhere to FCC regulations regarding advertisements, but when you have a sign that doesn't show any vulgarities and doesn't refer to a character by a different name, what's the point?

Late to the party, but I would say it's not lost media tho it's almost. There are only 2 torrent links to download the full japanese series (no subs) in one site, and despite it having like one seed, they still work. Downloaded the second part yesterday as it's what I was missing.
