oyy my guy you forgot to mention one of the key reasons why Kinnikuman (the manga) was so good. The creators of kinnikuman have always had their fans involved with the story of the manga. if you look back at every time a new character or characters were introduced they came with a "Submitted by *** from ****" or "Based on a submission by **** from ****" which is mind boggling to say the least. The only original character I would say in this manga is kinnikuman as terryman/robin mask/ warsman/ ramenman etc etc were all submitted by the fans. And one of the greatest bit of fun fact I could give is that the involvement of the Ashuraman and Sunshine in the tag team arc was voted by the fans as they had won a dream team poll a few weeks prior to the beginning of that arc. Even the 2011 continuation kept the tradition of accepting fan submissions as characters in the story.
Thats crazy, I remember Foxbox/4kids did a fanart promotion where fans could submit their own wrestlers they created and they would show it throughout the commercials of ultimate muscle.
Always makes me wonder too, do the people who made the character have full rights to use it how the want(like public domain) or is it strictly under the creator of the manga who own it. And on a other note since it’s a contest to have the character be in the manga and not a contest of like money or something, would there be a contract or whatever or is it just a situation where they saw something they liked and let it in
Kinnikuman was also influential in pro wrestling that there's even a move named after it...the kinniku buster later dubbed the muscle buster in the same vain as ultimate muscle was...which was the finishing move kinnikuman used where he would pick up the opponent upside down on his shoulders, grabbing the legs and folding the body in and the sitting or kneeling down impacting the neck
Hello, I am the founder and leader of Saiko no Fansub, i am not sure if you know my work but I am currently translating Kinnikuman where HnG stopped doing it. Also the Throne Competition arc. I really liked this video. and you are absolutely right, Kinnikuman is probably the father of all shonen. At least he is the one who stablished a shonen formula that has been followed up by almost any other relevant shonen jump anime since then.
@@strikerstar1958 Not sure you know this but there is word of a new kuniku man anime being made. There WAS a plan in the 80s to bring the Kinikkuman anime to the US TV. A deal was done and plans were set for a dub to tie in with the Muscle toys. But then the import licensor sat down and actually watched the show. They bought it sight unseen based on the toys already being sold. Something about throwing an opponent into a blenderman and blending the first one to death made the writers tell the production company there was NO way to make the show 'safe' for US afternoons. They gave up.
My first experience of fighting anime was Ashita no joe. I had a video of it with no subtitles lol. Was Ashita no Joe popular in Japan in the time you lived there? I think the first part was aired in the 70s but the second part of ashita no joe came out in the 80s. I watched kinnikuman but i can't remember where but i remember it used to be on at like 6am after power rangers.
In my opinion: Kinnikuman, Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball are the the most important shonen battle manga. Glad to see this series is getting rebooted!
I really hope the original manga gets an English print someday. I don’t think it’ll ever happen, but seven seas “Manga Classic Collection” takes chances in historically important manga that isn’t appropriate to todays standards and I could see it fitting in that brand.
I think one of the reasons I have an easier time accepting Broken JR is that in the WWE we had heals like Iron Sheik and Nicolai Volcov as well as others who’s gimmick would be to be some foreign villain who was a supporter of political enemies that American was fighting against.
Currently watching the the original Kinnikuman and it's surprising to see how much DNA it spliced into other anime. This is by far Shonen in it's primordial state. It's amazing that a wrestling anime is what brought the formula of Shonen to other series. It always bugged why I feel like any modern anime I watch, it feels all too familiar. Not to say Demon Slayer or MHA are bad, moreso, it's been tried and true to what Shonen is. I'd personally like to see a studio tackle rebooting the original Kinnikuman. Just to see how well can modernity adapt this old Shonen. Thanks for the history lesson, surprised at how much there was to talk about!
it's funny that kinnikuman was localized in french shortly as muscleman both the anime and manga, but the moment brocken JR apeared it was faced backlashed and cancelled it's funny that author stated that every time they meet french fans they tell them that that Brocken jr is cool xd
5:47 I mean, TBF, Americans are much more accustomed to DBZ than the original Dragon Ball so I suppose liking Ultimate Muscle without knowledge of Kinnikuman isn’t too far fetched
Also as far as the stereotypes in some of the Chojin, I consider it along the lines of South Park where basically no culture is above satire. None of the characters are seen as “better versions” of the others and they’re just exaggerated for comedic effect and/or to highlight their gimmicks better
I just recently purchased the entire first series, all of the movies, tv special, and the Scramble for the Throne series of Kinnikuman and it is awesome!!!!
This was a really good video especially your take on Brocken Jr I never thought of him in that light I always assumed he was depicted as a Nazi due to it being a different time
that segment is at fault, the best you can say is creators wanted to have Germany representation in the form of a wrestler or just an exaggerated German wrestler nothing more, and Jr. was just meant to be the "Revenge bad" theme and thanks to his popularity or pre-planning he made it into the main cast. i am just starting the Nisei continuation so i'll se if he fibbed there.
This was a great vid. I remember watching ultimate muscle when I was younger, and being interested in what I now know as the legacy characters from the old series, and how they had their own histories. I like'd your small character analysis of both Brocken Jr, and Sunshine, as I'd never given much thought to them before.
My favourite bit of continuity nonsense was that one machine handing out powerup items during a match, which randomly had a spot on the back to fit Ashuraman's crown....when he was not involved with it's creation in any way and wasn't even supposed to be present for the fight. And it not only actually *did something* but was the most OP thing you could do with said machine, randomly giving you all the powerups at once.
Good video but I have to disagree with how you described Brocken in the video, same as people trying to argue the same with Stroheim from JoJo. People seem to willingly forget that Japan was allied with Germany during WWII and there's generally no stigma or taboo surrounding the topic in Japan.
Like I can understand not wanting to admit you like a character you fundamentally disagree with, but it comes with the territory of enjoying media from other cultures, and to dismiss it entirely as being "outdated" or "uneducated" because you expect to see your exact moral standards mirrored by totally different cultures is just naive.
Something unrelated:I saw you arguing with that idiot down in the comment section who claims RNK started it all with stupid arguments like tournaments, fighting styles etc. without doing proper research on these topics that have existed since since ancient times.
On Brocken Jr, in the manga, he first appeared during the Planet Rakka arc. He was one of the choujin chosen to help fight the space samurai by Beansman...along with Ramenman. Brocken made it clear that while he wanted vengeance against Ramenman for Brockenman's death, he would be willing to work with the Chinese choujin to save Rakka. Even when he wanted to avenge his father, Brocken Jr. was still a heroic figure. In his image song "Red Rain of Berlin", Brocken admits that Brockman was "A German devil".
