How to use old photo NEGATIVE STRIPS in junk journals ~

  • Have some old photo negatives from back in the day? They’re such a cool, nostalgic thing and bring back so many memories of taking pictures and having to wait for the results. But how can we incorporate them into our junk journals? Imagine a story… and the layout ideas will start to, shall we say, DEVELOP. Let’s have fun with this one!
If you don’t have any of these strips in your attic or closet, ask friends or relatives. Since it’s so easy to convert our old prints to digital formats now, most old negatives are rendered useless. Your friends would likely be glad to give you a handful or more!

If you’re looking for more junk journal ponderings…. Last summer, I made a limited-series podcast about all my deep thoughts regarding junk journaling. It’s free on the Spotify app! Search for “Ordinary Paper” or link here:
    podcasters.spotify.com/pod/da...
Note that in the first episode, I mention that I was doing a podcast because I didn’t think I had enough ideas for a UA-cam channel. Things (happily) went a different way, so ummm, never mind on that!

Hi Anne! In fact, taking pictures and having to wait for the results is a very nostalgic thing! Good times! We used to be eager to see how the photographs turned out. Nowadays everything is digital, but I prefer physical photos because we can touch them.
Your projects with the negatives are great! And you are a good storyteller too. Thanks for bringing these golden memories to us and the idea of using the negatives.💗💗💗💗🌹🌹

Thank you, Mrs. C! I am so glad you share my memory of waiting for photos to be developed - no selfies in those days! Thanks for watching, as always, I appreciate you.

I love them, Anne. So unique and fun, and such good use of the negatives. Any interesting photos on the negatives? I must admit I would have looked at the photos; people, scenery, animals? I am sure I still have the old negatives of my photos from the '70s and '80s, stored in my old photo albums, packed away. I hope I didn't toss the negatives but who knows? Some day I am sure I will dig them out. I have fond memories of taking photos with my old-style cameras and, as you said, eagerly awaiting their development to see how they turned out. Fun times! Thanks for sharing and I wish you a great weekend!

Thank you so much! I did try to figure out what the images were - I don't have a loop magnifier, so hard to see details, but they seemed to be backyard barbecue photos, with a few folks gathered around picnic tables, and some blurry outdoor shots. I can only hope that they have the originals around somewhere that they have digitized if they want them! Thanks for watching!

Anne, good morning! Your timing is absolutely perfect! We're packing for a move from SoCal to Indiana, and in packing I came across a few film strips and couldn't really think of the best way to use them, so THANK YOU!! I did find some reasonably priced negatives online at Temu, if you're interested. Lots of flower images! Hugs from the southern California desert (at least for a few more weeks), MK 🤗❤️🌵❤️🤗

Good luck with your move! And I'm so delighted you can pack those old negatives in with your craft supplies. I really appreciate your watching, thank you - and have fun setting up your new craft space in your new home! Catch you on the flip side! (I have lots of relatives in Indiana!)

Wow, Dixie, this blows my mind, too! I really haven't seen any other craft videos about negative strips so I had no idea if this was anything that people would even be interested in, but your note makes me really glad I went ahead and did it! Thanks so much for watching - let me know how yours turn out! 😍

You are so very clever. When I think about the envelopes and envelopes of negatives I threw away when I sold my house it makes me sad. At the time I thought I have no use for these. I guess thats why they have a definition for ephemera.😊❤❤

I was looking thru my papers and I saw some braille paper I bought. The edge is just like the reel with rectangle holes. I got so excited I will paint or ink blackish brown. Make my own yay😊😊

HELLO ANNE! Had to make a list of my comment points... THANKS for mentioning ME. On photo developing over the decades..we always sought out next day or 1 HR. but i remember send out and waiting a week too. Do you OWN SCRAP or run that place Anne? Lovely that you mention your good friend and photography...i never understood the science of cameras, but i have a GREAT EYE and get very lucky with PORTRAITS i do of folks! On that postcard back...would the napkin layer split technique work? Never tried but will for myself sometime. On using people's images in art.....I SO DO THAT ANNE..haha....thousands of times! Anyways love me still. I LOVE your Film Negative project! Takes me back... Was unaware that old negs were selling on the old EBAY for good money. I still find them in free boxes quite a bit and pass but will grab them all now! TFS ANNE...Have a LOVELY weekend! ❤❤❤B

      Hello, hello!!! So, MY responses...!
      - You're younger than me, friend!! The next-day print developments came about for me when I was in college (with Paula!) in the 1970s and the quality was so horrible - the prints came out all disgustingly orangey (just like...never mind!) and the negatives were pretty much ruined, too - so we stuck with the one-week pharmacy routine!
      - GREAT IDEA to put a napkin on a postcard!!!!!
-- I started thinking more about my comments on not using people's photos. I realized I should have put more context around it. I guess the part the makes me uncomfortable is the TH stuff where people's portraits have been appropriated and mass-produced and sold for craft purposes. Nothing wrong with it, but it's just not for me. But anything in advertisements or college yearbooks doesn't seem to have the same uncomfortable factor - if you're in an ad or a magazine or a yearbook, you're OK with distribution - it's not a surprise. I dunno. I overthink, I think! haha.
Always SO good to hear from you, Brian! I loved your latest haul vids - will go back and comment later today. 😍

OH, and I forgot - no, I have no professional affiliation with SCRAP, I'm just an enthusiast! In fact, when a friend earlier this week asked if I'd drop off a few bags of yarn for her to donate there I said, "Ooooooh, okaaaaaaaay, I guess I'll goooooooooo..." hehehehe I love it!
