Same here 68 year's old and hard core metal halide grower since 1979 , switched to LED last summer and I'm over the moon impressed , had a 1000 watt cmh de , pulling 1000 watts from the wall , constantly struggling with temperature , now 23c , 650 watt's from the wall and my buds are the best I've ever grown , double yield , 4" fan !!

What did u get from the MH roughly? Heat hurts yields so an HID is pointless without proper extraction. Also HPS bulbs so cheap (half MH) did you never ever try one?

@@pedclarkemobile I only used a metal halide in the 70sanf 80s till I found out about other hid lamps , under my old MH , 1 oz , in my 5x5 under CMH 1000 watt de , I got shot ,2-3oz but the bud's were always washed out from heat , quality was good but too many problems with heat and most of all coverage , my Fc6500 bar light is only about 3" from the edges of the tent and every plant grow these same , most hydro shops don't carry hid any more on my area except used ......and cheap !

@@bruceholinight7978 wow those numbers are low! I know genetics have changed alot, since about 1990 hybrids suited to indoors came to market.
A double ended 1000w should get 36oz in the right environment... 18oz would be fairly standard in a tent. Big extractor with thermostat, decent substrate & nutrients.
Have u tried any hydro systems? Even handwatered perlite & vermiculite can give really vigorous growth.
I've been at it less than 10years & tried soil, Coco, hydro to get more yield per foot, been in alot of different locations but even with staff discounts when I worked at hydro stores I never bought an LED (luddite) but friend with same clones got less dense bud & less weight per foot but they saved power & didn't have to worry about hot spells in summer.
      Different strokes...

@@pedclarkemobile That's 5 plants 3-4oz=15oz , now 5-8oz x5 plants , but I'm old as hell and lazy so not sure of the weight exactly , to sum it up I got about 15oz with the CMH and now 40 oz if m not lazy and mainline everything , anything before about 2012 I had old school stuff and doesn't compare to these new lights and nutes ! I did win two local cannabis cups using the CMH so it is a great light just too much heat and power , only us a 4" fan now ....turned down !

@@bruceholinight7978 ok! That makes more sense! That's a very respectable gram/watt ratio. I was thinking that you'd be running out between chops with a 1kw lamp running! ... No danger of running low with a box+ per chop!

i have purchased two LIGHT SCIENCE GROW 300 to upgrade from the 1000watt HPS in my 5x5 tent i purchased two GREEN SUNSHINE V3 180 to replace my 400/600WATT in my 4x4 veg tent and one Maxsisun MF2000 for my 2x4 propagation tent ,, the light wattage is a saving for sure but the main power saving is COOLING and even in Northern Alberta Canada summer time my 4 ton split A/C ran full draw and using air cooled hoods works with the A/C but that means one more 6 inch fan per light so again more power use

I was 10 years with HPS switch to LED2 years ago so much better.. for the same running cost of a 600 W HPS I have managed to get a 1200 W LED blue and red light and 2 600 W LED true spectrum LED lights. Made by koscheal..!! (Took a wile to find the well made ones) so overall much more light coverage lower temperatures. Definitely recommend. One thing I found that might be useful for some people is that the lower branches don’t do so well so I found trimming the lower branches in the growth stage made for a much better result & yeild.. also remember not to over water as the lower heat output causes the soil to stay moist for longer.. ✔️

Great video!! I think most growers by now have accepted the fact that LEDs are no longer the light of the future, they are the light for the present! HIDs work sure but LED is definitely taking the cake... Not only do they take less watts from wall for same or better results, you use less watts from wall controlling temps. Higher upfront cost is the only issue, however worth every nickel!!

@@funkfarmer7125 your ignorance must be bliss eh! There are so many benefits of LED over HIDs, its not even comparable at this point, maybe a few years ago. Also not to mention the fact that we are now only staring to unlock what spectrum does to the cannabinoid profile because of LED technology. But hey everyone is entitled to their opinion. ... even if they are wrong. Happy growing👍

Something I didn’t hear mentioned nor seen in comments is that disposal of HPS and MH bulbs at least have mercury in them. I’ve had a greenhouse re-lamped in the past and the disposal cost exceeded the price of new bulbs. LED are still e-waste, but not toxic waste.

Watched a deal about UV and the photosynthesis process plants use. Marshydro doesn't use these values in UV for best output for the plants. The dark UV red and green with blue boosts the plants growth. It was over a very well known light sensor company called "Apogee" about their new PAR meter and about spectrum.

Really interesting video with lots of stuff to think about! I personally believe that supplementally lit greenhouses are going to be the most efficient compromise for growing. What are your thoughts on using sun/LEDs together? Can you give me your suggestions for fixtures that would be the best to use in a greenhouse scenario? Fixtures that are waterproof, passively cooled, and have a lens are the only factors I've weighed so far.

I'd love to get LEDs now they are getting cheaper for better quality lights. I hated the old purple LEDs which were still no match for a HPS. I'll wait another year before i get a LED set up. I did build the same homemade LED board migro used about a year or 2 ago and i use it for rooting clones and i'm more then happy with it for that and i've done some dwarf autos with it and got maybe 10 gram from 2 plants running it 18/6.

As soon as I switched from HPS to LED, I lost aroma and flavor. I've been working for almost a year to get it back. To be fair, I switched nutrients at the same time. This time, out of necessity, I took plants that were flowered for 6 weeks under LEDs, and moved them out and put them under HID lamps again. After a couple of weeks, the trichomes are outstanding, and are now milky. Under LEDs, the trichomes wanted to stay clear. Also, for some strange reason, the bracts are swollen, as if the plants were pollinated and bearing seeds.

I´m still struggling with leds. Working with Lumatek zeus 600w: the new 2,9. Still can´t get the bag appeal as with double tip 630w LEC. I manage to get the same yield. Growing in same area as with 630w LEC 1,2 square meters.
Could this light flower 1,5 square meters? It seems a bit optimistic.
I always end up with light burn or pale green leaves by the end of harvest. Not pale green from lack of nutrients, but light burn. Don´t know if its the fans, the proximity to the lights ( try to keep it at 50cm) low temps during some light hours (18-19 celcius) 2-3 hours a day.
    C02 is at constant 1700ppm
