I adore this track. After everything James has been through, this was catharsis. Accepting all the shit he's been dealt and finally facing it head on. It works perfectly for this portrayal of James.
I never played the OG SH2 but this fight had me in all kinds of goosebumps. I loved it. I listened to the original and I love that too. I think this one feels more triumphant for James overcoming his guilt vs the original feeling more like a theme for his final judgement. Either way, amazing game.
This song and overall the fights make it much easier to tell what pyramid head really represents. Just that little line saying "I don't need you anymore", is the perfect amount of exposition.
Felt like I was playing a Souls Game fighting these guys on Hard. They combo with the spears and alternate giving you next to no breathing room. Also - they’re faster, just like how the recent RE games handle their hardest mode. I wanted so bad to beat them both with pipe only but even with guns I was barely hanging on. This music playing during it was excellent. Maybe I’ll throw the footage into an extension of the soundtrack version when it’s out lol the struggle.
Therapy doesn't come easy so I like that Silent Hill has their bosses not mess around really. Although the Abstract Daddy fight being absurdly easy if you go melee is hilariously perfect lorewise. But the trauma bosses related to the characters themselves aren't really that gentle. Seriously before I knew how to fight the Flesh Lip she was beating my ass silly and making me use up all my meds lol.
I'd like to think that this fight is James making the decision to disregard his idea of suicide and chosing to continue living. After Silent Hill confronted him with his past mistakes and suffering he realizes that he is not the weak individual he thought he was. He is willing to continue to push forward and he will stop at nothing, thus fixing his scattered personality and rendering Pyramid Head useless. This track certainly fits that theme that i build for myself :)
I got chills on this part last week. The battle itself it's kinda whacky but everything else is too epic. It's been years... I mean YEARS since the last time I have the desire to replay a single player game, and I'm going for the other 7 endings. I'm ready.
The og version gives me the overall vibe of something a little more neutral. Like a machine. So matter of factly. The remake version sounds like a very angry thrashing machine that is screaming. Like it still wants to exist but its dying with those added in breathing like sounds. Both versions have their almost "heroic" quality to them. In a very strange way I can't put into more eloquent writing. Cathaaaarsis. That's what I'm thinking of. You could use this song for either the pov from James or Pyramidhead and it works. And yet both sides feel like they're experiencing catharsis. It's like the PHs are practically gleefully bleeding like they WANT to die. They want to fulfill their purpose and no longer be needed. But that doesn't mean getting rid of them is easy. It has to be earned. Its why I love that ceremonial like flair they put into their battle when they move their spears around before impaling themselves. But like Mary, who also wanted to die. She still struggled and tried to fight back. That instinct is kind of hard to shut off. Hence the almost resistance like sound in the remake.
Just finished the remake, absolutely incredible! The nostalgia, but also the new. So glad they kept the original tracks in, but changed them up a bit. This one is just as, or possibly more incredible than its first edition.
Personally I love the new version though I see many in the comments prefer the original. I think the Soundtrack Version will sound better, the game version seems to take it easier on the general melody while also adding extra sounds into the chorus similar to the Game Version of the original Betrayal. Just from the tiny amount provided in the preview of the soundtrack version it definitely sounds more impactful and the chorus clearer. There’s extra effects to the general melody too. Once it’s out I’ll see if I can emphasize that chorus because you can hear a little bit of choir in there (not as pronounced as the original I suppose but with some work maybe it can be done).
The song of a broken man who have nothing left to lose. James scream in the remake is really heartbreaking and unsettling. It's the scream of a man with good potential who is ruined by guilt. I tried to find this song during the 2 pyramid head fight in the soundtrack but couldn't. I think it's bizarre they didn't release it, it reminds the original Betrayal but the changes make it more about sadness and despair.

The second encounter with pyramid head I’m not too sure…the one where he’s chasing in the hallway. However the one later on in the labyrinth is Esoteric Woe which I am going to work on soon.
As far as the last Betrayal track "Betrayal's Reverie" goes, I have NO CLUE where that plays in the game. I cycled through all encounters that I had saves around (the Hospital chase and the Labyrinth sections). It couldn't be unused...maybe it's part of DLC on disc? Or a hidden boss fight? I have no clue! Maybe someone else has a clue to this? I only got through my first playthrough recently so I don't know I'll keep an ear out if I hear it somewhere...

The original betrayal was my favorite track from the og. It was the perfect musical embodiment of James’ guilt and sadness at its highest right after finding out the truth. This version trumps the original imo. It’s awesome

You know what I like to imagine PH looking like under the helmet? (HEAR ME OUT.) I imagine that if somehow James damaged that iconic headgear, he would find a grotesque facsimile of himself. He would be bald, his bloodshot eyes would be forced open à la A Clockwork Orange, his lips and nostrils would be melted to the point that they were sealed shut, and he would be desperately trying to breath through a mouth and nose that don’t exist. Tears would run from his eyes at all times, and even at his most aggressive, he would maintain an expression of pain and guilt. As it stands, Pyramid Head is excellent as is, but if that had been the big reveal, I feel like it would have been pretty cool and/or tragic.

Yeah this is my view on it as well. This is way more of a "standard video game/movie music" version of the original, i don't really know how to explain it. It's better as a standalone track to listen to, but with the context of the fight the original is 1000x better. It's more solemn, and the choir sounds better to me, it was already perfect the way it was.

Personally, I think if you listen with more focus, you end up realizing it's the same melody but with a completely different harmony. It's certainly not as scary as the original but as far being a melancholic or cathartic song is concerned, it still works amazingly. Also, keep in mind, the one who made the new soundtrack is the one who made the original soundtrack(Akira Yamaoka). It's been over 20 years and he wanted a similar yet different vibe. It's not that big of a deal.

@@ibrahimihsan2090 it’s not really up to you to decide what is or isn’t a big deal for me, you don’t know anything about me or my life. the original track means quite a lot to me personally. I’d also say it doesn’t really do the “melancholic” vibe as well at all considering bloober’s ridiculous directing regarding the cutscene before this fight, with those horror string sounds to emphasize just how “scary” and “shocking” the scene is, as well as james’ more epic movie dialogue before the fight starts - makes the altered melody sound more heroic. kinda shit. I also personally think Yamaoka lost his edge over the years, his recent works just don’t hold up to what he did prior and this is no exception.
