    Hi Ken, quick question, there seems to be several different pd chargers available so is there a preferred wattage to buy? Could I just use the one that came with my MacBook laptop?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  3 роки тому

      I'd use an 18W or 20W and you should have more than enough to charge the little battery as fast as it can. Otherwise I haven't experimented; If I need a fast charge I carry a second battery, so I don't care how fast it charges overnight. Wish I could be more helpful, but with the Canon EOS R5's 16 WH (watt-hour) battery a 20W charger could have enough power to charge it in an hour - if the camera could handle it. In other words, 18W ought to be at least as much as it can handle.

    • @mtjsrc1
      @mtjsrc1 3 роки тому

      @@KenRockwellTV Awesome thanks! I do have a 2nd battery for my R5, but you peaked my interest with this additional option. Turns out my MacBook charger is 87w ,so the risk of blowing up the R5 made me do further research. The Canon PD adapter is rated for 5v/15w and 9v/27w so like you mentioned the 18w non canon Amazon option is perfect. Love your channel!!

    Thanks for this video, Ken. Great way to get started with the R5. The 50mm 1.0 is a bit pricey, so I am looking at the 50mm 1.2 L, but would you go for the RF? Or is the $1k less EF version sufficient?

      The RF 50/1.2 is by far the best performer. See my review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/50mm-f12.htm The f/1 is a classic I bring out just to show what Canon has done. See the 50/1.2 at

      No! Works awesome. Canons EF lenses have always been 100% electronic since the 1980s (the worlds first), so everything is perfectly compatible. Mount size is especially irrelevant because the mount is so close to the sensor in Mirrorless; they’re no “tunnel”!as their was with DSLRs. Thanks!

    • @stephenspiteri_zunkus
      @stephenspiteri_zunkus 4 роки тому

      Not so sure you’re right if your comparing Nikon to Canon. Canon dynamic range in their sensor wasn’t so good until now that they’ve released this camera. If you’re comparing Nikon to Sony than you’re partially right. Sony have upped their game and became a force. Still not happy with their ergonomics or user friendliness though. It’s hard for a lot of us that have invested in good Nikon glass to just switch Ken. The latest Z series isn’t that far behind so there is hope in the stills department. That’s my main concern. Stills photography. Hoping the next generation of Z6 and Z7 get a bit more refined and practical with dual slots as they’ve done with the Z5.

  • @klausdonath7321

    4:15 What? It has 45 Megapixel so it could be 5bit and it would look great??? No thats not how it works... 5 bit would mean just 32 different shades of color per channel (RGB). It would look like a C64 game. :D

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  4 роки тому +3

      Nope: because of all the pixels, by the time it’s displayed you have the equivalent of dithering which allows subtle gradations. If you had only 640x480 that’s one thing, but at 45mp it’s no big deal. I’ve done this for a living and designed gear since the 1980s, and I’ve been in the lab where we disconnected the least significant bits and yes, even down at five bits per color channel it still looks fine. I’ve simulated it on photoshop, too. What happens is that the naturally occurring noise dithers the actual result, and with so many more data pixels than displayed pixels, it actually works. Sorry if it takes a PhD to understand; there’s more to explain than time for it here. Thanks for your skepticism!
