    Love this approach. I did a similar mod to my Summit stand last year and my entire mobile setup is less than 15 lbs. I agree, I’ll trade the few additional pounds for the benefits of stability, comfort, simplicity and space. Great video!

    This is a great idea. We have a lot of straight trees here. I am going to use the base of a Lone Wolf Assault climber that way I can use it still as a climber as needed. Sticks are s useful for the crooked, low branched trees. Thank you for your hard work and vids!

    Great points Sean. I'm one who has been using the hand climber portion. For the stability when at height, I use a little strap around the tree which gives me the stability I need. Do have to have a strap for my feet. I just use a long webbing strap that doubles as a rope attachment to my tether in case I need to go around a branch or something.
    The size hasn't felt restricting but I've not had a larger platform so I don't know what in missing. :) Will have to try a larger platform sometime for grins and giggles.
    As always, that's for the video as I always learn something.

    I’ve used a Lone Wolf Climber for almost 20 years before becoming a saddle hunter. I was a one sticking this past season. I have tested my Lone Wolf seat with a ratchet strap for stability and it is rock sold. I use black rubber bungees for foot straps which work great. The lighter better way to go seems to be the seat because it has a less bulky belt bracket in the way and is much lighter but you must use the ratchet strap.

    Sean, I used the seat section for the last half of last year with great success. Unfortunately I am reading on the forums that it has a high probability of breaking. I bought the whole system new and the foot platform pattern is a bit different than yours. I am going to take the plunge and cut it though. I am glad you did this first.

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  2 роки тому

      Yeah this is the old old platform. I have the newer one too that I did not cut. The newer design is actually better for cutting. It will give you a little straighter line across the front.

    Where you drilled and put the bolt. I put an eye bolt on either side so I can use a tie down strap to secure the platform to the tree. It doesn't budge.
    Great demo.

  • @tomzygmunt6891

    The seat’s lower profile allows you to add tree steps on both sides of the seat for movement around the tree. It will take some practice to quit a ratchet strap but you can then side load the seat without tipping it.

    It would be Awsome if lone wolf COMBINED the concepts of the two platforms to make the ultimate climber for saddle hunting.
    Take Hand climber and make the V groove deeper and teeth a bit longer to grab the tree better like the foot portion.
    Angle the traction belt arms more like on the foot climber to allow the back of the band to clear the tree, and add the place to put your feet into in order to accend/descend.
    Have it still weigh about 4 lbs .
    They would make a lot of $$$$$
    from saddle hunters!!
    It’s the fastest way up the tree, just like in you speed comparison video with different climbing methods.

    Functionally we are talking about a 4lb climbing method and platform for $150. To get the climber base you have to buy the whole stand so that's 8lb and $400, $450 if you buy the sit and climb, and you wreck the resale value. Tetherd one sticks and a ring of steps can get you to a similar weight range (sub 5) and height with aiders, but at $450 with significantly more bulk. You simply cannot beat a LWHC seat for saddle hunting straight trees, everything is a compromise at this level of gear.

    Hi Sean, That's innovative and I can see how this works. About the LW, I use the same climber, have no plans to cut my one & only up, but asking if you can think of an innovative mod for the seat. If the seat could fold-up when I stand-up, that would be nice, so it would much like the feature for a hang n hunt stand. As you know, the seat has the straps to the foot plat form for stability. How could one keep the stability and a fold-up LW climber seat? Thanks.

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  2 роки тому

      They do make a seat that folds up. In order to not have to buy a new seat you'd need a bracket against the tree that blots in on both sides of where the tubes attach to the seat. It could be done

  • @robertherrmann8599

    Great video. I recently picked up a LW climber for $75. However the seat section is just the U shape with a padded sling seat so my only option is to use the base. I also have a Summit aluminum that I lost the seat portion years ago. I may mod the summit instead of the LW. Have you ever considered running a ratchet strap around the tree instead of paracord for stabilization? I tested in the back yard and I can put full side load on the stand with a ratchet holding it from moving.

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Рік тому

      If I can use a climber, I tend to use my lone wolf climber over all. If it's a real long hike and I'm trying to cut weight, I use just the cut lone wolf platform and use my saddle and tether instead of the seat of the platform to climb the tree. If I can set a cordage in advance on a deep public land spot then I use the SRT climbing system for that. If I'm running and gunning with what I've got I use any of these three options.. if I know there's trees I can climb then I tend to use the climber options. If not, I'll bring a throw ball and SRT method ....

  • @joshholmes
    @joshholmes 2 роки тому

    Realized one point that you implicitly made but might have slipped past some people. Even with the heavier platform, you don't have to carry sticks since you're using a self climber which so you're still a ton lighter than most setups with sticks and a platform.
    I've bought some sticks this year because there are trees that are either too large for the self climber or have too many lower limbs. I vastly prefer my climber for getting into trees but there's a public land area near me where the trees I want to hunt have a ton of low limbs that are a pain the posterior to use the climber on so sticks it is.

    Shawn . This is a great idea. I will be shopping for a used lone wolf climber. Was your used stand the alpha? I currently have tethrd on sticks (4 of them ) at 4 pounds and a predator platform at 3 pounds so a 8.5 pound modified lone wolf climber base is not bad if you know you are hunting a fairly straight tree with just one or two limbs. So much faster and roomier with only one and a half extra pounds!
    Now don’t everyone run out and buy the used lone wolf climbers up :) till I get mine. PS there are still plenty of places I will use my tethrd one sticks and platform. They are great!
