I just love Russell's show-of-his-own that went on in the background of this video! He is choreographed like a ballet and appears to love the higher regions of the greenhouse, on tabletops and weaving gracefully through the containers of plants! I wonder whether he is having an inside "jungle adventure" in his imagination!
Hi Laura! Would you be able to post some “updates” videos on the winter sowing so we can see how long jt takes/what they look like right when you transplant to the ground? Going to try my first year at poppies😬
I love Winter Sowing❤️ I’m in 4a & it saves a ton of room on my indoor growing racks. I grow lavender, coneflowers & daisies this way each year & they grow beauty, healthy plants. One thing I do is sprinkle a little vermiculite & cinnamon on top to help prevent algae growth. I have also started my squash, gourds & pumpkins this way to give them a jump start but I wait until April to Winter Sow them. Love winter sowing❤️
@@anitacox651 not sure if I. Understand your question but cold tolerant seeds I typically plant in Feb., I’ll winter sow my squash, pumpkins, gourds, etc. April 1st
@@joannagel4681 Nothing more helpful than an experienced gardener in your own zone! Thanks so much for the schedule. I started a lot of seeds last year but a few didn't work out because I started too early/late. 😂 I didn't think a few weeks would make such a big difference but it really does in a short growing season.
Thank you for sharing even more stuff to winter sow. I live in northeastern Oklahoma and I'm in zone 6 like Laura, so she always helps me out. Sound like you love gardening also. It's so awesome. It's a wonderful hobbie. Also a wonderful feeling.
I’m in Australia, in a cold and some what dry area ( in Winter) so I’m looking forward to trying this in a few month’s time. At the moment though, I’m busy watering my borders and potager, harvesting strawberries, raspberries, black berries, tomatoes and courgettes- and watching my apple, apricot and plum trees fruiting up.
A tip for sealing the containers. Rather than using tape, make holes with a hole punch, for pipe cleaners or twist ties for easy opening and closing without the stickiness of tape. Love your videos and thank you for all the information on winter seeding over the past several years!
I picked up my pups ashes today. And they gave me a memorial seed packet. I was like can I plant these in jan? Sure enough I stumbled across your channel. Yes I can!
Looked like the stuck machinery was going to be a problem-nope. Aaron to the rescue🤣. Great tips for winter sowing. I’ve never tried it but I will this winter.
We are in Manitoba Canada zone 3 and the way I’ve done my poppies in the past was I did their stratification period in the fridge and then when we were beginning to melt( in March or so) that is when I would sprinkle them outside on the snow or on any bare soil patches. They came up much better.
I would pull your jugs to the front of the pallet so they are not under the barn overhang quite as much, They need all the snow and rain they can get in your climate. :)
I used winter sowing method with wary grey poppies last season and of course much more seeds than I had to, but it worked out great! I took the whole small bucket I used and without disturbing the toots, planted the whole “cake” in my border. It made a wonderful spot with hundreds of blooms for over a month! 😮 I just was really careful watering often and also giving them nutrients more often than elsewhere.
Hi! What climate are you and how often did you water (frequency and duration), did you spray or pour? Lol I'm sorry for the many questions... I am young but going to try using spare backyard space in my boyfriend's rental to beautiful the area.
@@p_roduct9211 I live in Sweden, and about US6 climate zone. It was a rainy spring last year so I didn’t even have to water them more than a couple of times. When I watered I have a mist on my garden hose so I used that.
Hello sweet baby. If you have pots then you can cut the bottom of the milk jug off and place over the pots. This removes the taping step of the process. Additionally the black pots should warm up better assisting in GermanNation.
I've been winter sowing for years. The poppies are so sensitive that I found direct sowing to be the best method. Though, Iceland poppies are always a challenge.
I planted some Leprechaun Gold columbine outside yesterday and a couple of cells in the refrigerator to see which one does better. I might try a few in a jug too, just to have another technique to try. The jug method was a complete failure for me last year, but the drought has moved here too and Feb was crazy busy. Plus, it could have been all me not keeping the misted enough or maybe it was because they were on the southside of the deck. Idk, it was a growth experience, not for the plants, but for me. ;)
Aaron got to save the day and play with his grown up toy. 👍 I was impressed by the variety of poppies you have. Only a little disappointed not to see those finicky blue ones. 💚💚💚

You're wisdom and expertise is greatly welcomed and I actually spread the knowledge earlier today that I got from Garden Answer last year to a fellow gardener who didn't know about winter sowing in milk/plastic jugs. You are helping to make the world a more sustainable and recycle-friendly place one overly excited gardener at a time 🥰😍😊 thank you for always sharing with us! 🥰

Winter sowing is such a wonderful method of starting seeds! HIGHLY RECOMMEND putting a label inside of the container as well... just to make sure you know what is growing in there if the weather wears off the marker! ;) Thanks for all the inspiration!
I wintersow every year, I put a coffee filter in the jug before I add my soil, this helps keep the soil from falling out the bottom. I also put my plastic plant tag inside the jug and then also label the outside of the jug. My plants are currently nestled in my bearded Iris bed that has a a picket edging fence around it, literally tucked in.
Heavy machinery stuck a problem-nope! Aaron to the rescue🤣. Laura even thought about bulb planting🤣🤣. The cats are enjoying the weather and I enjoy seeing them!
Watching Russell and Cheddar behind you just enjoying their life is fun to watch. You should put a camera in there just to see what they're up to when you're not around. It would be like your Critter Cam video with the skunk those many years ago. Thanks for all the inspiration you provide to us.
I've done this with great success in 72 cell seed trays. Plant them, water them in and stack the trays up outside in a somewhat protected area where they still get rain. I'll put an open flat or a piece of hardware cloth over the top tray. No need to thin or separate, Just unstack as soon as there's any germination and plant in the garden as soon as they are big enough. Native milkweed does great this way. This year I'm experimenting with hosta and paw paw seed. We'll see how that goes.🙂
They should know to listen to you, Laura, lol!! I remember a video from last winter where you and your mom planted poppy seeds at her house by sprinkling them over the snow. I wondered if that was successful and if any of them came up. Also, about how many poppy seeds did you put in each milk jug? Thanks for making my morning cup of coffee extra enjoyable every day!!
I think she said a while ago that they didn't see any come up at her mom's. I did the sprinkle seeds on the snow method here in Minnesota and it worked really well. I think your moisture levels in the spring are really important.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Laura wrote a book (or series of books) with all of these cool tips for gardeners like us? A lot of this information I’ve learned from hanging out at garden centers talking to old timers who have a lifetime of knowledge to share. If you write it I’ll buy it Laura! 🦋
A little off topic, but I am starting my first garden this year thanks to feeling so inspired by you and some other youtubers I love. So thank you for posting videos! I love seeing your plating and harvesting videos the most haha
I did winter sewing last year 2022 and one of the plants I 15:38 grew was the artichoke 3 made it to the garden and did really really well until they were covered in black aphids 😡I watch and checked everything in the garden faithfully and then one day !!!! I did everything I could to get rid of them and no matter how diligent I was or what I used things just kept getting worse on those 3 artichokes!!! So remembering Laura talking about “aphid attracter plants” I stopped treating them and never saw even one aphid on any other plant in my gardens🙀🙀🙀🙀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😂😂
Good morning! Could this not be more perfect timing, I will be starting a variety of milkweed seeds, as well as others starting today. My husband will be glad not to see that pile of water jugs....well, now they will be out in the garden. ;)
Same here! North Texas zone 8. I actually was going to start milkweed inside under grow lights but I’m wondering if this would work better. My concern for inside is that we will be traveling a couple of weeks in March and watering is an issue then. Outside may be the way to go. I have no experience with Milkweed germination and I’ve heard it’s not easy…
@@heatherderganc5984 winter sow them as the cold stratification will help. I’ve done butterfly weed and I have many plants now. Trying the yellow this year as I only have one of those and some critter keeps eating the seed pods every year.😏
I LOVE tractors!!! The best investment we made after we bought out small farm! My husband loves it and I love it when he can use it for a project for me!
So glad you did this video today...I've been saving my containers and was going to search out videos on doing this process. AND since I've had NO luck growing poppies the last couple years, this is definitely worth a shot
Works like a charm, just transplant in chunks as they are fragile and not during heat of day. Keep them moist and they will flourish. Planted out while still cool and they reseeded and I just looked and there are all kinds of bright green plants under snow just waiting to return. So excited as I got some purple to go with those reds this year.
I’ve been waiting for this video for two months! I’m going to try winter sowing this year. I’ve never grown anything besides sunflowers from seed before! I’m ridiculously excited!
I started watching your channel about 6 months ago and was hooked. Because I started out working at landscape business in my late 40s. We have so much in common. Like you I did a lot by trial and error. Now I'm 64 and retired but still gardening. I got my first green house 3yrs ago and it's been wonderful to be able to grow more plants. I love your channel and I'm still learning new things from you. Thank you for all your help. Never to old to learn.
😳I have never heard of winter sowing. Just found myself scouring house and recycle bin for appropriate containers. Grabbed my snapdragon, marigold and lisianthus seeds and now have 8 containers of various sizes sitting outside. 🤞🏻. Will try pumpkins and tomatoes in April.
I'm planning on winter sowing poppies, first time ever. Have my milk jugs ready. Been procrastinating the actual planting process. Watching ur video, hoping it will get me to follow through with the actual soil and seeding. Love poppies. Haven't been able to get poppies to germinate. Hope this is the answer.
To water my winter sowing jugs I put some water (just an inch or two) in a tub or long flat container and then place the jugs in the water. This allows them to be bottom watered (as long as you’ve added the drainage holes) and won’t disturb the seedlings.
@@Tracymw99 no, I’ll only water them only as needed. We have a pretty rainy spring so I didn’t need to do it often. It just made it a lot easier to water them all at once. After they soaked up all the water they needed I took them out of the container.
I really like the mix if planting that you do. Your features on seeds, like this, show how economical planting can be. Also, the varieties of plants available by seed far exceed availability in garden centers . While I struggle with seed success, I always learn something from your seed starting videos. Keep them coming!
Can't wait to try this! I've been really struggling with the dead Winter landscape and have been dreaming about planting. I saved several Lantana seeds from last year and can't wait to try these with this method!
Perfect timing! I thought I was too late and then I was upset I don't have water or milk jugs. But then I reliz3d I had jugs from dog treats and clear containers cookies I buy for work! So happy!
Poppies!! Thanks for the reminder, I have tried the past 2 winters to toss poppy seeds in my garden to no avail, I am not giving up - I will try again - gotta go. Happy gardening!!
Ooh hole for the tulips the auger couldn’t dig! Winter sowing is the only way I can grow larkspur. I tried for years to start larkspur. Last year and I tried them with the winter sowing method. The hardest part of winter sowing is remembering to plant them out in the spring. I use a drill to make holes in the bottom.
Last year was my first time I was able to successfully grow poppies. I winter sowed some in milk jugs and I also threw seed directly in the ground. Both came up but the ones from the jugs didn’t do as well as the seeds I threw in the ground. I garden in zone 6b and did my seeds the end of January. Thank you Laura for teaching us so much😊😊😊
Question (I'm in Zone 5b): does the placement of the jugs matter? South-facing? Shade? Part shade? Personally, winter PLANNING is one of my favorite parts of gardening. Sometimes the ideal vision of beds brimming with flowers is more fun than the muddy, runny-nosed, sometimes discouraging reality. 🤣 But watching your videos (you are one of the gardeners that loves the tasks--it takes all kinds!) inspires me to doing it! Thanks Laura!
I also live in 5b and mine did not do well on the southside of our deck, but the drought is eating it's way further east and getting us more. I was thinking about doing this and putting them on the north or west side of the shed or deck just to see if it makes a difference. Of course, you can't forget user error may have been a key failure point too. lol
Very kool thank you, i use milk jug for propagation of plants I have never thought seeds this early in winter. i am in northern michigan and going to do it ASAP
Im collecting jugs for winter sowing this year!!! I studied your winter sowing video last year many times and this is the year im saving on seed starting space :)
I love winter sowing here in southern Wisconsin, zone 5a. Last year, I planted 57 jugs similar to you except that I use clear Gorilla tape to seal the jug and fine vermiculite to cover. I grew lupine, echinacea, dianthus, bells of Ireland, snapdragons, annual phlox, strawflower, bachelor button, ornamental grass, poppies, linaria and more with great success. We have enough precipitation that I don't have to water them during the winter.
So happy you did winter sowing as earlier video you didn't think you would. I just got my supplies to start this weekend. Although hesitant because it was 53 today & unheard temperature for January for my area. Tip, I found helpful put shaded area to store and until your temperature start increasing steady leave in shade to prevent early germination. Once it gets constsistant warmer, move into a sunny location.
Laura, It is so inspiring to see you getting head starts on plantings. I think the time at Andrews and forecasting the next years seasonal needs was a good base for you planning today. When you think about the beautiful land you and Aaron have been blessed with, it is not hard to imagine your next projects.
I was amazed on how the plants did in winter sewing. Such fun to “peek” at the process. I planted some but I think I need to check my seeds to plant more. Western Pa so it will be months before I play in the dirt otherwise!! Your video’s got me through Covid thank you.
Love winter sowing. This will be my third year and you were my inspiration. First year I did fifty five jugs and supplied the neighbour’s with plants. This year not so many as running out of room to plant. Thanks Laura!
Winter sowing fills the need to start doing something when seeds start arriving in the mail. I put icicles inside the bottles, they gradually melt and add moisture. There are amazingly many plants this works for!
your poppy seed varietys sound awesome I well definitely be starting my winter sowing very soon I am growing forget-me-not ,sweet william , foxglove , blanketflower , shasta daisy , calendula , painted daisy , balloon flower , delphinium ,
I have 2 garden sacks full of milk cartons ready for winter sowing but we are way below 0degrees c still with us in Wales, UK so hopefully another week or two and It will warm up!
I forgot I wanted to try winter sowing this year! Thanks for the reminder! I'm in MN and I'm going to winter sow a bunch of my onion seed, snapdragons, artichokes and probably some other things. Every year I kill my artichokes in the process of giving them the chill hours they need hahaha
I watched this video twice, just to make sure it was as easy as it seemed. I am totally going to do this with some poppy seeds I was hesitant on starting. I have a small area for creating a cut flower garden, and limited indoor growing area so this will really help me see what I can do! I also over-bought stock seed after finding it in our garden center last spring. How did I never know about this plant?!? Stock and Bio-tone starter fertilizer are my new favorite smells :)
When seeing seeds in seed trays, have you ever had some germinate and grow around the base of the table, in case you accidentally dropped a few? Love all the poppy selections 😍
Still learning from Laura, I had no idea some seeds need cold stratification, just like I never knew some seeds need light to germinate. OK, I recently learnt from Laura about Larkspur and now Poppies x 💚🌲🌱🙏😇🇦🇺🌱🌲💚🐞🌹❤️🌼🌼🌼🕊️🕊️🕊️
I know you do this video every year (or nearly) but thank you for doing it again. When you mentioned seeds that need stratification it made me realize my Columbine seeds are a great candidate.
I'm gonna give this a try with Rudbeckia. Last season I bought two 5 gallon Rudbeckia from my local nurseries and once I plant them they wilt over and die. I don't know why. I wonder if its too hot but that doesn't make sense because I see review where they do well in the heat. Hoping if I start by seed I may have better luck?
Totally inspired! Wondering if I could plant spring bulbs in those to keep them from being eaten by critters this time. Sort of a la Claus Dalby but save on all the terracotta pots. Then plant the sprouts in the ground, giving less time for the hungry beasts.
I just love Russell's show-of-his-own that went on in the background of this video! He is choreographed like a ballet and appears to love the higher regions of the greenhouse, on tabletops and weaving gracefully through the containers of plants!
Trying the yellow this year as I only have one of those and some critter keeps eating the seed pods every year.😏
I did 60 of those last weekend.
So excited as I got some purple to go with those reds this year.
it's the middle of January in NC we have hundreds of Daffodils EVERYWHERE it's going to look amazing at REAP WHAT YOU SOW GARDENING
You look pretty with out eye liner.
It’s the Russell and Cheddar show!❤
Good morning, Laura☕️ I had fantastic results with this method and Lupines. Have a Blessed day 😊🐈
Direct sow, or in jugs?
@@cappar7567 in the jugs, I have problems with squirrels & chipmunks sometimes digging up my seeds & it helps jump start the plants.
@@cappar7567 in the jugs. I put five in one and they all grew! Good luck!
I love having my morning coffee with you. Thank you for being my inspiration.
Hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
To water my winter sowing jugs I put some water (just an inch or two) in a tub or long flat container and then place the jugs in the water. This allows them to be bottom watered (as long as you’ve added the drainage holes) and won’t disturb the seedlings.
So you keep water in it at all times?
@@Tracymw99 no, I’ll only water them only as needed. We have a pretty rainy spring so I didn’t need to do it often. It just made it a lot easier to water them all at once. After they soaked up all the water they needed I took them out of the container.
Will definitely be sowing now!!! Thank you 🙏
Good afternoon Laura and family
Can't wait to see the those beautiful colors of poppies. Thank you Laura. Have a great rest of the afternoon 👋😊
Good Morning! 🌞 Thank goodness for big tractors! An excellent refresher video, at least for me! I need to try this method! ❄️🌱💚🚜
Aaron is loving his tractor. Hope you all the success in your winter sewing, and that you don’t forget about them 😊
Perfect timing!
Don't forget about the barn overhang. I think one year they didn't get enough moisture because of the overhang, can't quite remember though.
I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
Thank you Laura for teaching us so much😊😊😊
I think i will try this. Poppies i have never done before. Thanks!
Of course, you can't forget user error may have been a key failure point too. lol
I have found full sun or as close as full as you have works best for me in 5B
Very kool thank you, i use milk jug for propagation of plants I have never thought seeds this early in winter. i am in northern michigan and going to do it ASAP
I am in Gaylord :) Want to try it too!
Hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
I always forget about winter sowing . So glad that I have a reminder like you Laura .🌸🌸🌻🌻
Thanks Laura,I have 5 varieties of poppy seeds to try out.I also still have other seeds too, here’s hoping .
I’m going to try this it seems easy enough and it’s motivating to plant something zone 5. 😊🌺🌺
Laura, It is so inspiring to see you getting head starts on plantings. I think the time at Andrews and forecasting the next years seasonal needs was a good base for you planning today. When you think about the beautiful land you and Aaron have been blessed with, it is not hard to imagine your next projects.
That was brilliant to put a seed marker inside the jug as well so you can be sure to know what variety you have planted!
I tried winter sowing last year. It was so successful and EASY! I'll do even more this winter.
There are amazingly many plants this works for!
your poppy seed varietys sound awesome I well definitely be starting my winter sowing very soon I am growing forget-me-not ,sweet william , foxglove , blanketflower , shasta daisy , calendula , painted daisy , balloon flower , delphinium ,
I love growing everything from scratch
Men live for moments like the tractor situation!!! Lol
Happy Birthday to Samantha Grace ! I would love to try winter sowing someday, you make it look so simple and easy.
I have 2 garden sacks full of milk cartons ready for winter sowing but we are way below 0degrees c still with us in Wales, UK so hopefully another week or two and It will warm up!
Love this method! We'll try it this year! You're right, hardening plants can be quite a process! 😀
Buenisima idea gracias por compartir...manos a la obra♥️👏👏👏
When seeing seeds in seed trays, have you ever had some germinate and grow around the base of the table, in case you accidentally dropped a few? Love all the poppy selections 😍
Still learning from Laura, I had no idea some seeds need cold stratification, just like I never knew some seeds need light to germinate. OK, I recently learnt from Laura about Larkspur and now Poppies x 💚🌲🌱🙏😇🇦🇺🌱🌲💚🐞🌹❤️🌼🌼🌼🕊️🕊️🕊️
I have been collecting containers and definitely feeling more encouraged now! 😊 ❤
Looks fun
Hello 👋I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
