I feel like, if we go the "No Gimmick" route, Gen 10 would be the perfect time to introduce a new mainstay mechanic to the core system like Held Items, Abilities, or the Physical/Special split

Innate team-wide boosts based on species I feel could be something cool to really shake up teambuilding.
Already powerful mons would only give maybe a ~4% boost to a single stat for their team or maybe no boosts at all, while weaker mons would give 15% boosts to multiple stats or even a 30% single stat boost across the entire team. Imagine Ledian becomes meta because it gives a 20% HP boost and a 25% Sp. Def boost to its team just by existing on the bench, or Plusle becomes a powerhouse by giving its teammates a free Life Orb sized boost to their Sp. Atk.
It will only work once per species, so no Plusle stacking to become Regielekis on crack, and will also be additive before multiplying each stat. So a mon giving +5% to Attack and another giving +10% to Attack would first be added together to +15% and _then_ multiplied onto each teammate's Attack.
The only issue I see is that, as with every stat altering mechanic, this would heavily favor offensive powercreep. One boost to either offensive stat would be equal to a boost to both Def and Sp. Def. And seeing how they handled Zamazenta vs Zacian the first go around, I do not have faith that Game Freak won't immediately push for giga Hyper Offense. And if they ever have mons boost Speed with this mechanic, that would also throw the meta into chaos, but seeing how they have never once added a direct Speed boosting item since Choice Scarf 5 gens ago (there have been one-use Speed stage boosters, but those are _way_ more manageable than a direct Speed stat booster) and are knowledgeable enough to perfectly stat Brute Bonnet to miss out on a Speed boost by 1 point at Level 50, I think they can at least see how bad of an idea that would be.

i understand why people don’t like z-moves, but they’re my favorite gimmick just because of how campy the whole thing is. gen 7 really leaned in to the absurdity of itself in a way we haven’t seen since, and it felt really refreshing for the game to have a sense of humor, especially after how seriously gen 6 took itself (to its detriment, imo). i think if z-moves were introduced in any other pokemon game, i probably wouldn’t like them, but the entire alola games are just campy enough for them to fit in perfectly and that is something i dearly appreciate.

Personally I like the limit break idea the most, but I think the most realizable is fusion*
*I think instead of fusion, we could get something like "soul bonding", where it's a one time use and your current pokemon will have access to the abilities, moves, and STAB of another party member as well as a stat increase based on the later pokemons' best stat. You won't be able to use the later pokemon until the "soul bond" ends by either fainting or switching out.

I like that you made a video like this. I honestly feel like the battle gimmicks are really underrated. Lots of people hate them, but I do think they're a good addition to the series, keeps each game more fresh than it would be otherwise and makes them feel like they have more of a distinct identity. It allows Game Freak to experiment with the battle system without the need to fully commit to a change that may have insane future ramifications. Overall, I like 'em, and I'm excited to see what they do with them in the future.

The next battle gimmick should be related to the battle stage. Stage Alteration. Once per battle you’re able to change the arena in which you are battling depending on a held item or move ->
For example: ground type Pokemon turns the battle stage into a canyon which provides defensive buffs to all ground and rock types while buffing flying and ice types’ attacks.
They can make it unique to each typing. Glacier for ice. Beach for water. Jungle for grass. Volcanic soil for fire. Etc.
There’s even an opportunity here for 2 things at once. For example: player A creates a canyon battle stage. Player B creates a volcano battle stage. The battle stage is now a combination of the two and provide unique buffs for its unique combination (ground moves now have a universal 20% chance to burn). Call it the Volcanic Canyon battle stage.
They can do this with all 18 types, it allows both players to change the arena to adapt to their team/style. And doesn’t change the pokemon itself, which I think is a nice change of pace

I feel a gimmick that allows the Pokémon to access all or atleast 2 of their abilities at once kinda like Calyrex “As one ability”. But it can be used on any pokemon. For example having an Exadrill with both sand rush and mold breaker, or sand rush + sand force+ mold breaker. However the only struggle would be Pokémon that only have 1 ability, but they can either give them other abilities or just cut them from the game.

I think Z-moves are underrated. The issue with them is how you have to equip a crystal on the pokemon to use them. If I were coming up with a gimmick, I'd aim for a z-move esque mechanic that has a limitation outside of sacrificing the item slot. A throwback to Black and White's pledge moves and coordinators in the anime but better, I'd call it "Combo Moves" where you have a meter that let's you use 2 moves together to combine their effects in some manner but not a straight x-move + y-move effect. Like if you combined Brave Bird with Aerial Ace, you get a slight boost in damage as well as no recoil and bypasses accuracy check. Combine Thunder Bolt and Metal Sound and you get an attack that first lowers the target's sdf 2 stages then blasts the target with electric + it's 100% accurate like Thunder Bolt. But then you can also combine two different type attacks to deal multiple type damage or a special and physical that would take the property of which ever is 1st in the combo. Or in double battles, combo'ing with both pokemon could help a slower pokemon act in tandem with a faster one.
Using a combo would deplete your combo meter but depending on the combo would differ with how much the meter is depleted and over the battle, the meter can slowly build back up again, meaning you have the chance to do more than just 1 combo per fight. The benefit is, animation wise, you can just play both attack gfx at the same time to show off this combo. Not as much new animations are needed.

A usable item that makes an attack that has a chance to miss ignore accuracy checks could be a good strategic option for things such as hurricane/blizzard

I think the issues with mega evolution can be resolved with your limit break idea, instead of giving the pokemon stat bonuses just make them mega evolve. This accomplishes a few things:
    - It keeps the coolness factor that the player based was enamored with
    - It can actually be kept as a mainstay mechanics as GF just needs to add more megas, diversifying the mega pool over time
    - It has that "final stand" theme that I think the anime was going for with mega evos but that didn't quite make it in game

Trainer Items. Similar to your Armor idea, but just having a handful of items that boost your entire team, and you can only equip one. Helps you play into a whole archetype.
You can have 6 that just increase an individual stat of all your Pokemon by a certain %
Maybe one where all super effective moves do extra damage
One that can effect status moves (Ex. Whole team unable to fall asleep)
One where the whole team can't have stat drops
There can probably easily be 15+ of these Trainer Item Archetypes that you build a team around. I'm sure it would send the competitive scene into a whirlwind

Really like the limit break idea, although rather than ability based activation I imagine it being triggered via negative RNG, e.g. getting hit by a crit, self-hitting in confusion, being fully paralyzed etc. as a kind of "equalizer". It likely wouldn't affect battles too much but could imagine it being super fun to exploit when fighting stall mons that can abuse RNG.

    1) I would loooooove if they brought back strong v agile style. I think it is the most genuinely strategic I ever felt during a regular pokemon game.
    2) Something that could be interesting to see, though I doubt it'd ever happen, would be a game with mostly double battles, and as such some gimmicks revolving around that system. For example:
    - A move which combines the two active pokemons *main* types and deals damage by some metric (maybe avg. attack stat with a base 90 or smt?). It's be cool to see the strategy of doubling up on a type to maybe deal more fire type damage, or using a grass/electric to be used against a water type or two. Presumable one per team per game.
    - This could be a time to use that fusion mentioned. both pokemon have to be on the field, and presumably only certain combos would work. Starter trios would probably pair with each other, maybe duos like seviper & zangoose, stuff like that.
    - A 'cover' style move, I'm assuming it gets more love to be a special gimmick kinda thing, where a pokemon can take all the damage of the opposing teams attack, like follow me but probably would have it's own various drawbacks and strengths by way of being a gimmick and such.

  • @marciapaulo6054
    @marciapaulo6054 День тому

They could implement fusions by reinventing the breeding system. Like, imagine there's a new professor studying egg groups, and they eventually find out that some pokemon from different species but from the same egg group have the capacity to breed hybrid species. That's something that I think could work like the masuda method, meaning that if you breed a Charizard with a Dragonite, for example, there's a chance that you will hatch a Charmander-Dratini hybrid.

  • @normal6483
    @normal6483 День тому

For fusion, whenever it comes I think that it'll be sort of like "in-dwelling" in Genshin Impact, where one becomes a spirit and inhabits the other. So physically the model wouldn't change, but it might have a ghostly version of the other Pokemon behind or above it. What they do from there is up to the balance team, but for fusions I can see it working. They could even have special forms for when specific Pokemon fuse, like how Dynamax had Gigamax, or how Terapagos has a special Terastilization form. So Blastoise and Venusaur would have a special fusion form, but Blastoise and Nincada would just result in a mechanically significant Jojo Stand.
That being said, I think there's really something to the Limit Break idea. Heck, it might be a way to access the regional mechanics from previous games! Once you fill up the meter, you can activate it to access a feature from a previous game. Let's call it Dimensional Break, and say that you're reaching across space and dimensions to draw on the power of other regions. And to make it balanced, I think that it should be fully charged whenever 2 of your Pokemon faint. In double battles this would mean you can only access it once, unless you have revival blessing. And in single battles you can access it twice. But in the main campaign, where you can use revives, you'll be able to use it over and over and over again, as long as you're losing. It's a balance mechanic in the players favor, and I know that Gamefreak really likes doing that. (As seen when they gave you a Mega Lucario for free as part of the main story.)

I hated offensive Z-moves because it basically just gave a nuke that took away from the the strategic part of Pokémon I felt, and that it took away from status Z-moves that I love because more often than not it was better to click the nuke
I understand the armour concept but I’d hate it because
    1. I wouldn’t be able to wear clothes I like because armour is strategically better
    2. I don’t really like the visualisation suggestion and I feel the idea of being ‘inside a Pokémon’ leads to issues the company may not enjoy
You have me really thinking with Limit Breaks activating off of an ability usage and I like the idea of it powering up based on the use of abilities but I see one big issue and that is offensive abilities are easy to control like you said with technician but some defensive abilities like regenerator or even intimidate require switching to proc multiple times. They are controllable by the player and would be great in the singles format but VGC doubles is Pokémon’s preferred system and switching in that is MUCH less frequent
I also really like the tug of war system except the effects are so powerful that it’s basically a win-con and the way you describe it doesn’t sound that flashy and that’s one of the KEY things all gimmicks have, a big animation.
I personally think if we’re doing something like that it needs to have an effect that goes off with a big animation once it procs and only once per Pokémon based on the ability (or general type of ability) like a healing ability will suddenly have a big explosion and do a full heal with a buff to sp. Def and def. Attacking abilities could result in a one off big animation belly drum (or probably for things like technician that isn’t for special or physical a tailglow for both spa or atk)
I think terastal stuff is the perfect balance of attack and defence choices tbh and I’d love that to be combined with status a move design in some way, but as they’ve already been done I don’t think we’ll see it

I don’t love the limit break idea because while you have to play well to activate it, once it is active, the game is basically won. I think a good idea for the next gimmick would either be super abilities, enhanced versions of their current ability or a power boost that gives the pokemon raw stat boost depending on what pokemon they are/their item. both can only be activated once per battle.

Alright. I've been thinking about fusion. If you want to have fusion in a game you have to limit the number of pokemon, maybe about 150, also limiting it to only fully evolved mons cuts down that number again, maybe limit it further. The region this happens in should only battle in double battles. Ever.
To fuse two pokemon they have to:
    1. Both hold an item, let's say a 'fusion crystal', which normally acts like a type boost item for one predetermined type (fire fusion crystal, grass fusion crystal).
    2. Both mons have to know the move "fusion", which may also be a way to limit which mons can fuse by who can learn it. The mlve has to be used by both mons on the same turn, basically like setting up an effect or boosting.
The result: a pre-designed fusion-mon with the better stats of each mon, a new, fitting ability and the six remaining moves of the fused mons. Gets the typing NOT from the fused mons, but the crystals used to fuse. That way this mechanic basically becomes a combination of terra and mega.
Pros: powerfull pokemon with six moves and chosen, boosted typing.
Cons: sacrifice 1 move for 2 pokemon, sacrifice a whole pokemon out of six (or four), spend one whole turn for both pokemon setting up the fusion AND no held items other than the type boosting fusion crystals.

Battle gimmicks are themed around an existing aspect of Pokemon. Evolution with megas, type with tera and moves with z moves. I think the next gimmick will be themed around abilities.
Maybe we will get the ability to let a Pokemon have both its abilities. Or maybe all Pokemon will have 2 abilities going forward, do make them more unique. When the Pokedex was smaller, it was easier for each Pokemon to have a nieche. But now, that is often difficult. Most Pokemon have Pokemon with the same type, similar moveset and better stats. By giving everything 2 abilities (and changing bad abilities a bit) that would make the overlap smaller

I want Tera to stick around for the next gen. It’s a really cool mechanic and I think GameFreak could expand on it with Tera forms. Tera forms were essentially a combo of Megas and Gmax but toned down. These forms would give the Pokémon a new ability and change Tera blast into a unique move (as seen with Terapagos). I can see it giving a niche to some underused Pokémon without changing the meta.

I think Fusion COULD work if it was like... only 1 specific Pokémon that can fuse with every other Pokemon. This would probably have to be like a Miraidon/Koraidon situation, where they're outside of the 6 Pokémon party.
I personally don't like the switch to 3D but it DOES make this kind of fusion easier. Just slap the Fusee anywhere onto the main Pokémon and call it a day. Maybe give the Pokémon they want to give a spotlight to (starters, box legendaries, mythicals, charizard again) a different design incorporating the fusion aspect more into it, but keep the mechanics the same
As for the mechanics... maybe give Fused Pokémon a new ability? Each type gets a new, different ability when fused. Or replacing a move with a powered up move.
I also think that these should be like dynamax and only last for a few turns

You know what? I'm just going to explain my ideal Pokemon gimmick: First you need to catch a special kind of pokemon, which I am going to call a catalyst pokemon, which essentially act as a 7t party member. In battle, you can fuse your catalyst to one of your regular pokemon. This gives your pokemon a changed typing, buffed stats, a second ability, and access to new moves; these aspects are determined by what catalyst you use. You can only use your catalyst after you build up a special meter during combat, which drains over time while your pokemon are fused. You can also spend the meter more by using special catalyst moves. Hope you like it! Give me any ideas you have this as well.

Would be neat if there were more "styles" learned throughout the story, tied to gyms who specialize in that style. Crit style (lowering accuracy), accurate style (preventing crit), leech style (reducing damage, adds healing effect), physical/special style (change a move's stat type), evasive style (creates a dig or fly type dodge move), etc.
Any pokemon could equip 1 or 2 style options, and retrain them out of combat. Their use could be tied to a new resource that grows as you finish the game (starts at 2 uses per battle, then 4, 6, 8, 10).
It's not very flashy, but maybe that dev time could be used to improve models & animations 😭

I agree that they would never do it, but I find it hilarious that in an All-Gimmicks scenario, it could theoretically be possible (balancing and limitations notwithstanding) for me to, for example, have my Houndoom Dynamax on Turn 1 with a G-Max Flare to activate the sun, then Mega Evolve on Turn 2 to take advantage of Solar Power, and Terastallize in Turn 3 with Solar Beam for instant STAB. Like it would never happen the way I described but the mere idea gives me a good laugh.

One thing i thought of were equipables. Kinda like how terastal overwrote a pokemon's type, you could get a weapon/armor that had it's own type separate from the mon's own. So if you put water armor over a fire mon, it now takes reduced damage from water types. or if you equip an electric weapon, it would work as a fifth electric attack with it's own pp same as any other.
design wise i think it would manifest as a different color shield or a unique animation for each weapon kinda like ogerpon's club
but you could only have one armor and one weapon each on one seperate mon in your party to balance it out. plus it would really make double battles interesting

  • @svensings01
    @svensings01 День тому

Instead of usual fusion where the pokemon physically combine, how about something like Terastalization, but a pokemon is instead empowered by another pokemon in the party. You could have some kind of "spirit" of that pokemon appear over the other like the Tera hats, which would let you combine the powers of any mon with any other without the issue of massively inflating dev time or forcing them to create a model for every combination.
I'm not sure what this could specifically do though. It could lend the ally pokemon one of that pokemon's types kind of like tera, or let them access a move from their moveset or some feature of their ability. And then you could have it so that you can sort of "sacrifice" the mon to trigger the fusion, so in a double battle, you can have the choice of either keeping both mons out for consistent two turn damage, or saccing one to empower the other. Maybe it could even restore health in proportion with how much health that one has left? I haven't fleshed this idea out much but it feels like you could make it really strategic.

  • @superzenmodeman
    @superzenmodeman День тому

I think flavor wise, Gym Leaders in SV terastalizing Pokemon out of their type is the way to go. It lets gym leaders be more inclusive in the Pokemon they can bring in while still being true to their type.
The main issue is that the AI isn’t built to use these tera types more strategically. Which may be more of a limitation in how they built the AI rather than the intended flow. For gimmicks aside from Z-Moves, the game is just always programmed to use them immediately after the mon gets sent out.
Whereas in for example the anime, Gym Leaders have been more tactical with their Tera transformations, such as how Brassius kept his Sudowoodo rock-type against Roy’s Fuecoco at the start of the battle, but went Tera Grass as a finisher when Fuecoco went for Stomping Tantrum.

I will still stand by my opinion that having all gimmicks exist at once would be a balancing nightmare, and while im not competitive, i can easily see that the competitive meta would be a complete and total mess and likely make team building very restrictive.
Plus i think after gen 7's mess of a meta probably taught GameFreak a lesson that maybe only having 1 gimmick is better to balance around, and i also appreciate how the gimmick's we've gotten past gen 6 are used more often during the campaign compared to Mega's where you only ever fight 2 of them in the entire game that it felt like gen 6 just forgets that mega's even exist (hell gen 6 even hands you a broken mega that invalidates the rest of the story since gen 6's difficulty is a flatline)
also it's ironic how while Tera can be used offensively, in official VGC doubles it's rarely ever used on offense, instead it's mainly used defensively

The limit break would be a cool mechanic, but I feel it's a bit overtuned. I think both parties should be able to break, but only one at a time. the first player to reach the requirements for their limit break you can hold onto it as long as they want, and if they don't use it, their opponent never gets the chance to use it. However, if they have already used their break, then their opponent is free to break if they want. This way it's not as one sided after the limit is reached.
I also think the effects should be dialed back or it will be far too centralizing like dynamax was

9:06 I know this isn't the point of the video, but if they were to bring these gimmicks back, the way I think they should rebalance them as well as make them all unique is:
Megas: Mega stones are fine. Sacrificing a held item is good for most megas, but I think they should expand the Battle Bond ability, and expand it to all Megas, so you can choose between sacrificing item slot or ability.
Z-Moves: make it a consumable. Use it once in your pokemon, and they can use it once. In competitive, this wouldnt go away, but in the actual game it would, similar to charging tera orbs
Dynamax: make a terrain move for power spots. The area fills with Eternatus's red mist, and you can dynamax any of your pokemon while the effect remains.
Tera: it's fine. It can be the generic one.

I gotta agree on the use of Terastallisation by gyms. They could have covered their weaknesses while staying true to their type, getting the best of both worlds. But instead they break the type rule without covering their weakness, getting the worst of both worlds. Their terastalisation Pokemon is the wrong type in teambuilder!
Also, by terastallising from their type o a cover type they could terastallise any of their Pokémon, or terastallise their ace. And they could vary in when or even if they use terastallisation. But instead they are predictable and boring with it.

How about making the secondary type less important than the primary type.
Let's take Golem and Rhydon as examples, having the two same types in different positions.
Secondary types now only take 1.5 damage, so a Fighting move will deal Golem double damage, but only 1.5 damage to Rhydon, and vice versa for Ice.
Now, for a type super effective on one type but resisted by another, let's see how Skarmory and Corviknight will react to Fighting: Skarmory will take 1.5 damage, but Corviknight only 0.75 damage.
Lastly, Psychic/Dragon/Fairy/Steel/anything-else-Steel-resists-but-Flying-doesn't will deal Skarmory 0.5 damage, but Corviknight 0.75 damage.
