  • Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison offers some possibilities as to why they are not producing. His first thought is that they are no longer being pollinated. Pecans are wind pollinated and possibly a pecan tree nearby was removed. Mike explains how pecans are pollinated and how it requires at least one each of two types of tree. He also wonders if the trees are receiving enough fertilizer.

well i live in iowa and got 2 northern pecan trees and was hoping that they would produce but after watching this video im guessing they may not. prob not to many trees in the state but i got these from the city that they got from a patch that was growing in wisconsin that was found several years ago. a variety that was thought to have been made extinct.

Same my gulf coast trees aren’t producing these last two years. Could be climate isn’t cold enough or the air isn’t pollinating

I live in Webb County, Texas and I have six thin shell pecan trees (not sure what type - they are supposed to be self-fertile) - they produce lots of catkins, starting around 4 years after planting, but I have never seen any female flowers. Last year, after the Big Freeze in Texas, one of the trees produced just a handful of pecans, which we found after they fell to the ground (I don't have any lawn or grass - the yard is concretized and the trees each are set in their own 6 foot diameter plantars with a pebble gravel cover, so it's easy to see anything that falls off) - so now I'm wondering if the problem all along has been that we don't get enough Chill Hours! Where I live in Webb County is Zone 9A, and typically gets around 150-200 chill hours. Last winter, with the Bill Freeze, we got over 600 chill hours. Do you think the low chill hours are what is causing the problem? Are there any pecan trees that reliably bear fruit? Will any of the Mahan, Mohawk, Pawnee, Western Schley (all rated at a minimum of 250 hours by Bay Laurel Nursery) bear pecans in this climate? Are there any other low chill pecans worth considering?
P.S. I fertilize the trees twice a year and a lot of zinc sulfate as well. At this point, I don't know what else is causing the trees to not bear any female flowers although I see lots and lots of male catkins every year.

The freeze hurt the trees , probably cold damage, it takes normal weather patterns

What is triple 8? H? I have a +60age pecan tree, it produces but the nuts aren't great. Here in Oconee County,SC everyon's pecans don't produce like they did because of a drought a couple of years ago. I'm a new property who wants to give the best care ❤ to my 🌳

Triple 8 or 8-8-8 is fertilizer. It refers to the amount of nutrients in the fertilizer in percent nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium - in that order. All fertilizer will have those three number on the bag, though they may not be all eights or even the same number. Some common fertilizers are 8-8-8, 10-10-10, 13-13-13, 6-12-12, 34-0-0, etc. The numbers are the percent of that nutrient in the bag so 8-8-8 contains 8% of each of the three. The rest of the contents (76%) of the bag is filler. When you know the percent of each you can easily convert between 8-8-8 and -say- 13-13-13. for each pound of 8-8-8 you need you can use .61lb of 13-13-13 (8 divided by 13).

Does anybody know if there's a certain time of year a person would fertilize the pecan tree. I think this is what I'm needing to do.

Late winter is the best time. (early March)
Non-bearing trees: Apply 1 pound of 10-10-10 fertilizer per year of tree age up to 25 pounds per tree.
Bearing trees: Apply 4lbs 10-10-10 per inch of trunk diameter measured just below the scaffold branches.
In either case broadcast the fertilizer at the drip line.
I would highly advise you get a soil test to see if your soil has all the nutrients it needs.

I have 2 pecan trees but the squirrels always get to the pecans before they're even ready to drop. I've seen that people put aluminum on the bases but there's other trees around it for the squirrels to jump from! Is there anything I can do about that?

    • @FamilyPlotGarden

Squirrels can be a big problem. This Extension publication talks about ways to control them: ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74122.html. Often the best way is shooting the squirrels.

@@inharmonywithearth9982 My 3 dogs aren't too old, they chase squirrels but since there's other trees around the pecan trees they can jump to and from. Yeah, I dont kill them either. A life of another creature for some pecans just doesn't seem right, or for anything. My mom's friend has some pecan trees and she gave me two big bags of them! So I got what I wanted anyways 😊
