Honeybadger...I experience precognition. 9/11, so many terrible things, the analysis of life, combined with a Mystical outlook = MAGIC. In my park in NYC we have raccoons, rabbits, squirrels and sweet feral kitties. Three nights ago I saw a critter that I had never seen, thought it was an urban skunk. It was you ! 🤣🐾🐾
For 80 years old, his quickness of wit and his intellect are humbling. He was entirely engaged throughout the interview and he was quick enough to correct the small things and to interject when necessary. How cool. If it takes an implant to achieve this level of longevity of mind I'll be the first in line.
It just so happens he started with a very very big cognitive head start, so even through inevitable cognitive decline he will still be able to hold his own in any conversation
Rees is a great example of why matured elders will always be the default to finding wisdom and sanity in progress. Lex has a great optimism which is normal for being under 40, but once you cross 40 and have some experience with all the generations of life, you realize that science fiction really is fantasy for the most part, it’s just that it’s the fantasies of nerdy boys, but it’s fantasy all the same. No one wants to be cared for by a robot in old age. Before returning to grad school, I worked in hospice and took care of elderly people in institutions. It’s a crime we put them in these homes as if they were a burden on “economy” and progress. Old age exists precisely because we are supposed to develop our consciousness further (beyond the maturation it goes through when you become a parent) by taking care of our mothers and fathers, uncles and aunts. It’s not dirty work. It’s profound and humbling and it’s where we find our deepest wisdom, which the tech utopians most often lack because they’re stuck in their childish fantasies. More elders as guests on the show would be a great balance to the youth Lex is still experiencing. People like Rees have the vital ability to speak sensibly about the future of the human race without the tech sensationalism that often blinds the Musk fanboys (me being one of them). Well done on getting this diamond soul to speak on the podcast!
Well...his comments on the possibility that the human brain may be incapable of understanding all aspects of reality is clearly correct..but I never heard it put that way before.

@@StixKennyin actuality he needs to meditate- can’t let the what ifs go. Can’t stop dwelling & delving- until his mind forces him. He’s just scraping the bottom of the barrel of his minds to regurgitate what he’s been programmed with- a western rendition of astrological science- an elderly boy if you will. Unable to cope with the “excitement” of the minds ideas- literally needs to shut the f**k up- and ponder the great silence of life.

“Sometimes I think the surest sign that there is intelligent life out in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us” - Calvin and Hobbes -
Best funny comic strip ever, in my opinion. I was a teenager during the years they were being written. I recall feeling so sad when Bill Watterson announced he was retiring the strip. Spaceman Spiff daydreams by Calvin in Ms. Wormwood's drudgingly boring classroom were exceptionally entertaining to read in the daily comics.
Lex, I am certain - that as you do these interviews - you see a bit of yourself in your guests and perhaps one day you may be in the other chair, imparting your experience, wisdom and insight so the knowledge-transfer continues onto the next generation of scientists and explorers. What a tremendous series you continue to grow. We are all the benefactors. Thank you for what you are doing and I hope you remain safe in your travels.
What a remarkable human being. Thank you to Lord Martin Rees for doing this interview. He makes excellent points. Some of which a little over a year later are being revealed. For example, The James Webb Telescope and its recent discovery of a Galaxy that should not exist at the edge of The Universe.
Hearing Martin saying: #46:00 "Aliens may have reached a point where while Darwinian evolution favors aggression and intelligence, but after some point of evolution they are past this Darwinian point and evolution does not favor aggression but intelligence more". Then looking his image. He might be some alien creature came here to teach us something.

I can't think of a better and more informative way of delivering information about life and the universe than a gentle older british professor. I'm not familar with Martin Rees, but even 5 minutes in I'm totally enraptured
He’s not just an older British professor. He’s the Astronomer Royal! The very top! Well done to get him on! He seemed to be having a very good time and the resulting chat was uplifting and enlightening. Hard work for a non-scientist like me (I’m with his chimps on this!)but I am compelled to try. Very entertaining questions!
His CV is bonkers; top UK astrophysicist in the last 50 years, President of the Royal Society (club for ultra boffins), Master of Trinity College in Cambridge (a sort of mini Harvard or Yale) and a Lord no less so gets to sit in the House of Lords at Westminster in a funny red gown. Well, he earned it I say.

I met him 21 years ago and he taught me Applied Statistics to apply on Analysis of random Subjects prone to Drinking, Carefree, Smoking and Mating , for Medical Policy making & control of such Propensity .
Martin Rees - Huge respect for him. He is a deep thinker. Big people will be unhappy after listening to him that thing could be understood to the level of singularity. I believe that things will continue go.
Once again Lex you have stunned me with the scope of your curiosity. It is truly a beautiful thing to behold. Bless you and bless everyone who remains dedicated to the conquest of curiosity.
"It is man's greatest mistake to believe that all he perceives is all there IS to perceive." I can't remember who said that, but it is a good watchdog for feelings of certainty. I don't think either Lex or Martin feels 100% certain about many things, especially cosmological things or notions that explain "everything". This admitted uncertainty, or reluctance to say things unequivocally, is what gives me a feeling of comfort. The comfort science brings far outweighs the anxiety of the existential and unknown. In fact, toiling with the unknown is a fascinating endeavor and one which a person could devote their entire life to and never want for more.
You have such a healing voice @Lex Fridman. You’d be a great hypnosis therapist, honestly. The energy in your voice is so grounded, it soothes me immediately. There’s a lot to be said for that. Blessings & thank you for another phenomenal interview. 🙏🏼🔥💜🔥🙏🏼
Once again I come home after working my nuts off ( took me 4 hrs to find petrol to get home from the middle of France to Normandy... Total is on strike) and I feel privileged to listen to another wonderful human reminding me that it's not all doom and gloom. What a charming fellow Mr Rees is.
Don't know about you all but to me Lex has really leveled up as a podcaster. Where he sometimes got a bit lost in the questions he asked, he now seems to have acquired enough knowledge to really be called the heir to the thrown of podcastroyalty. One piece of advice. Drop the elon musk fanboyism. He isn't the solution to all our problems😉. I too like the guy but I am not joining the cult
I love how he explains all these questions you ask from him. Simply amazing ! I admire both you ! So much knowledge is explained! Ty for this interview!
Lord Rees said this towards the end, and I thoroughly agree that the quality of our elected leaders has greatly diminished. What I wouldn't give for even 4 years of him steering the UK on a better path.
I do enjoy listening to these deep conversations between Lex and all of his intellectual guests. But, does anyone else recognize how often guests will state that “This is all contingent on us not destroying ourselves first!” or talk of the great filter that very well could be ahead of us? If we define humans as being intelligent because of our ability to recognize patterns than I do believe that this is a pattern we should not only recognize but proactively address. Our goal, to solve these issues first and foremost as big and varied as they are.
There is something about the way this guy talks that I really really like. I can’t put my finger on it, but I’m sitting here smiling at everything he says lol
its all physics mate ,we are human monkeys learning , we grow old ,get white or grey hair and become a scientific phisisist or physisyst or phiyst for short ,that word, enjoy life
I absolutely love space/physics nearly to the point of obsession. It's what keeps me awake at night, just wondering why is all of this here, what are we all doing here on this rock hurdling through this vast void. It blows my mind!
Omg, me, too! I think I do what they call "thought experiments", everyday, many times! I have a BS degree, but not in physics. I took physics 1 and 2, loved it. And also consumed w quantum mechanics! I try to learn, everyday! Haha! You are not alone. 🙂
@@sabrinakingsoundworks9897 I can sit with friends for hours and have these philosophical discussions and it's amazing! It's something that never gets boring and I'm always finding out something new.
When you ask "Why?" do you mean "How does it work?", "What is the cause?" or a generalized, vague sense of wonder as when people ask, "Why are we here?"? Only the first of these definitely has an answer and even so, it may be that we are not capable of knowing it. Just that same, I agree that there is simply no better way to spend one's time.

Exposure to great minds like this in a long format is easily the most valuable content on UA-cam. I can't imagine all the impact this is having on young minds as well, beautiful stuff
Been following you a long time.
This is a treasure of an interview. Like Penrose his mind is agile and present. He never lost the flow and moved out in fascinating directions.
So grateful.
It does feel like their scientific minds eye and wisdom in the field has only gotten greater with time, they're basically yoda like figure's. Wouldn't be surprised if they force ghost.
You pinpointed it with words I fail to come up with … thank you
how can you have been following a long time when his channel isn't that old?

I could only wish to be as eloquent as Lord Rees at his age. Still remarkably sharp at an advanced age.
What a superb conversation and a brilliant mind! I wish there were more like him and I think we should all aspire to be more like Martin Rees in valueing deep thought and to be as respectful conversationalists as him
Martin is truly an exceptional human being.
Lex, you are the best interviewer on the Internet and have the best most interesting guests. Thanks for getting me into astronomy and cosmology. Opened my eyes up the universe and I’m the most humble I’ve ever been. Glad to see you’re safe!

I doubt it@@KozmicKarmaKoala lots of shinny things in that park, must have been your reflection 😉
For 80 years old, his quickness of wit and his intellect are humbling. He was entirely engaged throughout the interview and he was quick enough to correct the small things and to interject when necessary. How cool. If it takes an implant to achieve this level of longevity of mind I'll be the first in line.
He might be a robot...
Carrot juice.
Maybe it just takes never ending engagement of the brain instead of the fatal passivity older people usually get presses into.
Well this shows you, it does not.
We have been here for millions of years and have gone through this same thing thousands of times on this great cycle of 24,000 year cycle.
I'm 13 minutes in and I'm blown away at Mr Rees' intelligence
Older than joe biden too. Lol
Yeah it's pretty remarkable, even just after 5 minutes you can tell Martin is just a well of insight
Well...his comments on the possibility that the human brain may be incapable of understanding all aspects of reality is clearly correct..but I never heard it put that way before.
Yeah still sharp as a razor, real life wizard.

It's great to see a person from an older generation have such an open mind to new and exciting things
I was thinking the same thing about a person of a younger generation.
Open-mindedness often comes with age. It's wisdom born of experience.
Interviews like this are why I started listening to podcasts in the first place.
I would happily listen to Martin Rees and his rational thinking all day, much better when he's one on one in an interview.
Amazing conversation, aren’t we spoiled by Lex ❤
I’ve meet Martin in the clubhouse of Stanford university about 15 years ago. The introduction was by his senior Baruch Blumberg president of the American Philosophical Society. Baruch found the cure to hepatitis B and saved millions of lives.
Lex maan I just can't get enough of these intellectual talks! Thank you so much for all the work you out into supplying us with absolutely top notch content. Take care!

I have watched soooo very many podcasts/ interviews, and during the initial few minutes of this one i thought i may just switch to a different one. But, i did not. And it has been one of the best two hour segments of my life in recent memory. Thank you Sir for your time and contributions, and thank you Lex for showcasing. Brilliant
This man is literal solid gold.
He’s literally not
@@StixKennyin actuality he needs to meditate- can’t let the what ifs go. The great concept of “Non-Infliction” in which your own desire to inflict an opinion, a narrative- is just merely an egoic illusion.
How lucky are we that we get to join a conversation and listen to the histories most profound intellectuals?!
These really are the best of times, despite the great challenges that are inherent to any era.
I’m so impressed with the diversity of interviewees on this channel.
There comes a time after being consumed in a movie you wake up to your reality, go home and find the toilet has backed up, therein lies most of life problems.

What a remarkable human being. Thank you to Lord Martin Rees for doing this interview. He makes excellent points. Some of which a little over a year later are being revealed. For example, The James Webb Telescope and its recent discovery of a Galaxy that should not exist at the edge of The Universe.
I love Martin Rees... He makes me so proud to be an astronomy nerd and buff 🤣

I love reading comments on Lex's channel. It is one of the few places on the internet devoid of drama and bickering. Just regular folk grateful for wonderful, inspiring content - a tribe fitting of Lex.
Lex, I see that your podcasts continue to improve. What is appreciated is the rare combination of the obvious orientation towards truth, and the intellectual fortitude with which to back it. I am humbly grateful.
You are so fortunate... being able to be face to face with all of these wonderful thinkers. Thanks for choosing to do this.
Lord Rees has left us such a wonderful legacy, not only in his continued contributions to physics, but also in his brilliant protege Max Tegmark.
Martin Rees might be the best science communicator at explaining the broad overview of cosmology for the general audience.
I can't think of a better and more informative way of delivering information about life and the universe than a gentle older british professor.

I’m surprised I never heard of this man. He is brilliant! Looking forward to reading his literature
Martin Rees - Huge respect for him. He is a deep thinker. Big people will be unhappy after listening to him that thing could be understood to the level of singularity. I believe that things will continue go.
What do u mean by singularity?

@Lex you are so smart. You can literally speak to anyone on any topic at any intellectual level. I'm so inspired by you and the way your brain works.
