  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tom Santopietro, Author of “Sinatra in Hollywood: The Film Career of a Screen Icon”
    About Harvey's guest:
Tom Santopietro is the author of five books: “The Sound of Music Story”, “The Godfather Effect: Changing Hollywood, America, and Me”, “Sinatra in Hollywood”, “Considering Doris Day” and “The Importance of Being Barbra”. A frequent media commentator in programs ranging from the PBS documentary The Italian Americans to the Jimmy van Heusen biography Swingin' With Frank & Bing, Tom conducts monthly interviews for Barnes and Noble and lectures on classic films. Over the past thirty years he has managed more than two dozen Broadway shows.
He’s here to discuss his fascinating book entitled, “Sinatra in Hollywood: The Film Career of a Screen Icon”, which not only celebrates the screen legacy of this iconic star, but also delves into his tumultuous marriages, his political involvement, and those persistent rumours of mafia connections. Although we usually think of Sinatra as a recording and concert artist, the fact is that he made 61 feature films, and was a tremendously gifted actor.

This is a great interview with a writer who is always so meticulous in his research and detail. Thank you Harvey for once again hitting a homer.

Another amazing interview as I too am a huge Sinatra fan! I just told my partner of 27 years that I feel like I've found an old friend. While my knowledge of classic film is nowhere as great as yours. Ironically I have many gay friends but I am hard pressed to find anyone as interested in them as I am. I joined a few "classic film " groups on FB so it's always nice to go in and compare and share our various opinions on our favourite classics. Thanks again Harvey. At least I'm retired so I can watch many of these as I choose! On to the next one.......😊

I love your interview with Tom. You play off each other very well. It made me want to research Tom's background. I would love to see more interviews with him. Loved the one you did with him on Doris Day. I would love to hear some of his stories about being a manager in the New York theater scene. I bet he has some stories to tell.

PS Harvey - you are an excellent interviewer. In each of the interviews I have seen so far, you catch the guest off guard because they are blown away by a particular question.....so well done. By the way, did Paul Williams send you a check for your therapy session --- lol. Such a great interview with him.

Thank you so much for your very kind comments. The best “compensation” I received from Paul Williams, was that he told me I gave him the best interview of his life. That’s priceless!!

Sinatra singing "The Lady Is A Tramp" in PAL JOEY is his very best moment on film.

Dearest Harvey, This was once again, as always quite interesting, and as always, you find the kindness and amazing ability to allow the interviewee to feel that THEY are leading the interview. He was indeed spot on with Frankieboy. Harvey my sweet friend, I would love to share with you a great old family story. Sit back if you will, and sip a Lady Gray. 🤗💕 Some fun facts here; my great-grandfather rented to Sinatra’s father in Hoboken when Frank started out with the Hoboken Four. My great-Uncle Ernie, my grandfather’s brother, was getting married, and so my great-grandfather went upstairs and banged on Sinatra’s door and said to his father, “Your son, must play for my only sons Wedding with his band. You owe me six months rent! He plays my sons Wedding, you owe me nothing. We start over clean slate!” So his father agreed, and they played my great Uncle Ernie’s Wedding. My dear mother who at the time was 18, and a professional singer and on the Arthur Godfrey Radio Hour, and she was at the wedding, and when the band took a break, they placed my mother, who was stunningly beautiful, up on the stage, and she sang “Dream A Little Dream Of Me”, I “I only Have Eyes For You” and “More Than You Know”, and when she was through, Frank walked over to her, sweet talked her, and made a date with her!!! SO..this was late 1937, and so my dear mom’s family lived in the posh section of Hillside, as my grandfather owned a large percentage of Bristol Meyers, and they had a nice Mansion with a circular driveway that was not tarred, just gravel. Frank said he would call for her at 6. Now my grandfather was a “STRICT” Sicilian right from Sicily, and this was his only daughter of 9 children where he had seven sons and another daughter much younger. However mom was the 2nd oldest. She was waiting by his Study window, and grandpa was reading the paper, and she placed a bit of lipstick on to brighten her face, as she had such a creamy complexion. Grandpa noticed the handkerchief by her mouth, and bellowing in his booming voice, says, “ARE YOU SICK, PHYLLIS? YOU SHOULD STAY HOME IF YOU HAVE A COUGH!” 😳🙃LOL! 😂 She says, “No, Papa”, I am just a bit shy with a new date, that’s all.” He says, “PERHAPS I SHOULD GO WITH YOU!”😂 Anyway…6:00 comes, and goes..and 6:15….and 6:30…and 6:45…then 7:00…then finally, at 7:10, a big Cadillac convertible comes flying INTO THE DRIVEWAY, and BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!, on the horn!!!! Mom gets up from her chair to go, and Grandpa says, “WHAT WAS THAT?” ..Mom says…That’s my date, Papa.” Grandpa said to my mother, “GO OUTSIDE, AND TELL THAT NO GOOD BUM YOU ARE NOT DATING HIM, TONIGHT, OR ANY OTHER TIME! A GENTLEMAN COMES TO THE DOOR TO GREET ME, INTRODUCE HIMSELF, AND TO TAKE MY DAUGHTER OUT! HE IS NOT WELCOME HERE. AND TELL HIM TO GET A ROOF FOR HIS CAR! YOU WOULD HAVE CAUGHT YOUR DEATH OF COLD IN THERE!” 😳😁😎..So, mom, all dressed up, had to go outside and tell Frank she could not see him. Now I was young, Harvey, when she told me the story, and I had played all his albums and had seen his movies. So now with all these details, right down to the Diamond beveled glass in grandpa’s Library.. I was frantic to know what Frank said, so I pushed mommy to the end…”What did he say? WHAT DID HE SAY??! She was so sweet, God rest her…she replied so innocently, “You know? I don’t recall. I remember the screech of his tires, and Grandpa bringing me into the house, and I DO remember washing my silk stockings out TWICE in the tub that night, as they were FILLED with dirt. 😳🙃😎…..So I teased her and said, Mom, Frank ‘PATCHED OUT’ on you?!!!!😁🙃 Awww..poor mommy! Then I became dramatic Harvey, like any gay boy, and threw a fake temper tantrum kicking and screaming on the floor and all, “I COULDA BEEN THE SON OF A STAR!!! LOOK AT MY LIFE NOW!” 😂😂😂😂 My dear dad had the best thought for me, “You would’ve lasted a day with him! He would’ve sold you overseas and no one would’ve ever heard from you! Ya bum Get up! Apologize to your mother, and go get a job!” I was 12 when she told me the story! We all laughed! Ah my beautiful family and life. Mom DID see him a couple years later down in Newark, 1939, going into Decca Records, after he married Nancy. He held the door for her and they spoke briefly in the elevator. He told her she was one of the most beautiful women he “almost” ever dated! She smiled, and got off the elevator. Ah life. I hope I didn’t bend your ear too much, my sweet Harvey. I do write you novellas…you should be used to them by now! LOL! Anywhoo, once again, an amazing interview with such a wonderful Artist of the day! You made smile, once again, with your charm, your kindness, your sincerity, your immense talent for enjoyment of the life and happiness of who the person is you are speaking with as well. I admire your ability to keep your busy pace and yet always maintain a smile. God’s blessings to you always. Love and Kisses, Frankie 🥰❤️⭐️❤️🍁🍂🍁😘🤗😘💕✌🏼🙏💕❤️🥰💙

My, my, my what a story! Maybe I should be interviewing YOU!!! Thanks for sharing. Your Mom sounds lovely. Sounds to me like she dodged a bullet. I’m sure Nancy Sinatra Sr would agree!

😂😂Oh yes! Nancy would have thrown him at mom if she had the chance, from what I have heard, as that was one of his biggest flaws, he loved his beautiful women! Thank you for listening, my friend! I wanted to share the family history with you. I have a picture of mom walking into Decca with Frank and a surprised look, holding the door open for her, and (only mom😉)not even looking up but unfastening her glove, and Frank with his eyes WIDE, like the cat that swallowed the canary!😂 ...Moms first boyfriend was Phil Brito, who wrote the English words to the song “Mama”. They remained lifelong friends, and friends even with Tony Bennett. Anywhoo, I chewed your ear enough. You must think BOY! He doesn’t keep quiet! Have an evening as wonderful as you! Love and Kisses🥰💙
