"Cut off your legs, for you are too slow." These lyrics were the first I ever heard from this man and the start of a very deep rabbithole that's lasted 30 years so far.
It's funny cause my favourite lyricist is Neil Peart. My second favourite lyricist is Dave, and they're nothing alike. Dave is unique in his own way, no one writes like him.
as a lifelong Monster Magnet fan since Spine of God, i want to say that weirdly enough, Last Patrol is by far my favorite album even though it is a later one. that record just displays Daves brilliant imagination when it comes to songwriting. instead of trying to make another big rock record like Powertrip, it feels like Dave makes the records he wants to make, writes the songs he wants to write. and thats why i love how Monster Magnet has evolved over the years.
Love that the Space Lord, Emperor of Excess, takes the interview in his kitchen, gas cooker with blinking timer on in the background and his tea towels neatly arranged on the oven handle. This is not sarcastic. I love it. He's such a fucking dude. Never compromised his art and is an inspiration.
There is probably no musician nowadays I relate to more than Dave. The dude's so down to earth. His lyrics are so damn relatable. Love being a Monster Magnet fan.
I always loved the first time listening to Monster Magnet around the turn of the century for me. I was living down south in New Orleans. Probably around 97, 98, 99. Loved it and ate it up. Heavy, Psych Rock, Space rock, Classic sounding. Great engineering BTW. Just in your face and going to be the new springboard but then the 2000's came and everybody in the mainstream dissed the up and coming new music and wanted fashion show rock and no street smart rock anymore. I wish Dave were a neighbor in the future. Seems like a great guy and normal. Straight shooter. Love the interview.
Only reason I wish he did have an internet presence is so that people like me could interact with him. I live in ND. Monster Magnet is never anywhere near here, and my life will likely never allow for a chance to see them. This band and Type O are the bands that saved my musical taste, and set me on the path to who I am today.
Dopes was my first cassette, yes fucking cassette! But hes like a real dude, like a working class blue collar dude! But hes done some really big stuff and cool gigs, fucking legendary stories, what a life! Then he goes back home to the real world with the rest of us Walmart shoppers lol.. What a cool guy. A legend, deserved so much more. So much more.
Love Dave, part of his band is coming to my town in September, as their other band The Atomic Bitchwax, to play a small club. I wish Monster Magnet could draw enough for a show, but that's a tough reality of Magnet playing a lot of place around the US
In the early 90’s, Monster Magnet played a small club called Reptile House in Grand Rapids Michigan. We had an after party at my vintage shop. The band came at my request. I was wearing brown suede bell bottoms and Dave was wearing a brown suede vest so I figured we were destined to hang out. Dave bought a cool blue leather jacket from the store and right before the band left I presented them with an actual red Monster Magnet. They were floored and Dave said the band had been looking for one. Hi Dave! Do you still have the magnet?
I see SoundGarden do the worst show ever in uk. Chris was kicking cans at the crowd slagging off the UK! The band walked off stage. See them again years later & it was great. Seen Monster Magnet four times & they always do a great gig..
Best gig ever was Alice In Chains at small venue Town & Counry club London. The early years... Nothing else comes close. Rollins End of Silence was an incredible gig too
Great Interview man! Dave and I are 3 months apart age wise and I grew up in Seattle and played in a pretty popular metal band at the beginning of Grunge-1991. It was kind of difficult but there were still a lot of people that liked butt rock. Spandex-no flannel. Heh Heh. But I really liked your interview, I get bored with many interviews and podcasts and just turn it off. I made all the way through this one and enjoyed it. Thanks!
cool story about slash and the magic shop, i remember reading about dave and MM making dopes in the magic shop a long time ago, was a cool book that interviewed every band member? at least 3 about making a classic album, kyuss was also in it.
You are a True Muical Genius! From the Lyrics,Writing, Composition, Messages, RAW Drive!I'm a Killer BASSIST and A Star 🌟 Child. Give me a Shot for your Next Album, Project,!
Dave, if you are reading by chance, please re record your old stuff on new equipment. The first ep with a less lofi equipment would be _great_ Cheers from Italy
I didn't mind the Axl rants I thought they were funny at times, but once Axl started singing like Minnie Mouse and not all raspy, watching their shows is an endurance test, and i say that as a Lifetime GN-effing-R fan
I think Ozzy said it best "it's a shame to have had the right look, the right sound, at the right time and fucked it off. It's a recipe you can't buy, you have it or you don't. They could have been stones or Beatles level of fame and fucked it off. Truly sad" its not a verbatim quote, so take it easy internet police lol
Dave picked the wrong bicycle. Obviously it should've been the silver machine. Only Wyndorf should have access to that, what with his sometime Brainstorms. And Nik Turner has no use for it these days About the only band I ever wanna see (again)
blood meridian... I did'nt get through it yet. Too much bashing the skulls of kids and a dude participating and documenting. Cormac is a good writer, but brutal.
Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. The Axl who was ranting and running around like his hair was on fire 91-93 was polarizing but you had to watch. He’s never been the worst front man regardless of what this man is saying he’s not on any list that Axl Rose is on in fact I never even heard of him.
No shit the, worst, I think this guy did land on his head when he got hit by that car one of the best front man ever, hands down. He needs to wear his helmet when he rides his bike now ,he still in concussion protocol.
this B leaguer wants us to believe he was used to playing in front of way more chicks than with Metallica? The biggest selling band in the soundscan ERA did not have chicks at the shows? No, my man there thousands they just wanted to go after METALLICA

Happy Birthday Dave Oct-28-1956.. Dave is a genius song writer, my fav lyricist of all time

Great interview. Monster magnet is a true Rock band. Been a fan since forever. Dave wyndorf deserves more credit for his contributions to music

You ROCK Dave !
I don't Care if there's no more Monster Magnet studio albums in the futur. You already released so many masterpieces
well said.

Rock n Roll never died. It evolved into Monster Magnet.
"Internet Democracy" should be the name of MM's next album!

Seems like he was closer to, maybe even a pebbles throw from Glenn Danzig.
How do you get him on your podcast?
label connections
You should've asked him about the hot dogs at Sebastian Bachs house.
