- Is this a treasure chest, or a chest of drawers? Maybe it's both.
It's all built out of pallets and scrap wood, along with scrap metal and almost 1000 copper rivets.
If you enjoyed the lock build in this video, a longer video can be found here.

I've been a cabinetmaker for 35 years, and after watching your video, the only piece of advice I would like to impart would be that "no one likes a show off"!
Absolutely astounding! Never once in my life did I think "I'm going to hand forge my own lock and key."
Hats off to an absolute masterpiece of old school technology.
Thanks very much for the comments, Randy :)
Anyone (the both of you) *sigh* , so much talent and awesomeness. I'm sitting here squealing with absolute delight, as I'm watching everything unfold 😁. I'm no carepenter, but I do know (from small jobs I've done), that working with timber is such a soothing and calming. experience. Watching this entire process has been utterly inspirational. Thank you to you so much for sharing 🥰.
I agree with Randy
Please keep showing off! :)
I learned making furniture as a profession, the only thing that did catch my eye was pretty much that you do a lot different if you work with an budget (mostly due to recycling used wood) and not doing dowels and mechanical connections, but that is more an matter of physolophy than skill.
Most frustrating is that one has to use so many shortcuts and prefabricated today to sell at an price people consider right (because they throw it away after five years to buy new then fashionable furniture again for cheap)
Whenever I see a new video is posted, it's a huge event for me. I wait til the kid and wife are asleep, I get snacks and a drink and settle in so I can watch it in peace with no interruptions. This is by far my most favorite channel to follow because all of the content is treasure. The design and detailing is of course very impressive, but the dedication it must take to even face performing the work is super human. Watching the first couple of minutes of just getting the original planks milled down to workable material, it's such a contrast to the amazing quality of the last few minutes, when the finishing touches are applied. In this video, every time I thought, well it's about to wrap up...nope. Here comes even more detail work, and more, and more. Hats off to you sir, your efforts are worth the wait between releases, and everything is so rewatchable. If I could wish for anything for you, it would be that you never run out of inspiration to create more of these "riveting" videos.
Thanks very much for the comments, Jason ☺
Nothing more, nothing less.
I am in complete agreement.
@@josephalexander3884 me too. Every time. Keenly anticipated, very much enjoyed.
X10 i can totally relate! This content is pure gold!
Why do I love this video? Let me count the ways: 1. You show just enough of each step for your viewers to understand it with no mind numbing repetitions. 2. You seamlessly mix modern machine tool work with ancient craft skills. 3. Your facility with each fabrication step is mind numbing. 4. Because the only sound is that of the work, there is no discussion of "Me, I or You should." 5. You do not promote sponsors. machines, consumables or vendors. You can do more of these!
I appreciate the minimal use of power tools.
I love the quiet of your videos; no narration, no irritating music. Thank you!
Only a real Master can make such a beautiful and useful thing from waste material !.! Wow !
Words alone can't express my admiration and awe at the skill and attention to detail here. This is just incredible to watch, absorb and be entertained all at the same time. Thank you so much.
I mean, come on man, what the serious bleep!?!?!? This was both insane genius and immensely satisfying to watch. Makes me miss my days of making furniture.
There is nothing this man cannot create!! I mean, can we all reflect on the fact that he handmade the lock and key for this chest? The patience and skill involved in this entire project is unimaginable!
Thanks for the comments ☺
@@EpicUpCycling amazing.
A true mastercraftsmen
That was quite the plot twist when Jason suddenly became an expert mechanic welder and locksmith.
Midwest Magic cleaning UA-cam videos recommended your channel. I am SO impressed! I will be watching many more. Thank you.
Absolutely brilliant! The only thing I can add to the many, _many_ comments rightly complimenting the excellent craftsmanship & videography is a call to the millions of people who watch this video: _please stop buying cheap, throwaway furniture... upcycle what you can.... and support craftspeople by paying for quality!_ This video only shows a _tiny_ fraction of the time & effort that goes into hand-crafting furniture, and while it's more expensive than mass-manufactured items it's going to last a lifetime or more... even go on to be upcycled itself in the distant future! 💜🛠
Thanks very much :)
Everybody here is giving credit to this man, who is a craftmaster no doubt, but, hey, let's give some kudos to the filmmaker! His work is awesome and makes the entire video even more soothing, more inspiring and more entertaining to watch from begining to the end!
Such a relaxing way to get away from me doing something similar and watching someone else. Every time someone wants to know why I can’t do the job for $50 I need to show them this video. It takes time and passion. It’s not Lowes MDF furniture that will fall apart and be in a dumpster in a year
Well said , that's the truth.
Lowes???
@@vtbn53 I think he means Lowe's, the "furniture" shop ! ;-)
@@TheClBlues What Lowe's the furniture shop? Lowe's is a men's clothing store.
@@vtbn53 Lowe's is a home improvement retailer in the United States and Canada. Perhaps in other countries there is a clothing store by that same name. However, I think you might be confusing Lowe's and Levi's
Craftsman ship is excellent, and you made the lock key, my husband said you’ve got watch his channel, he can make anything, and he’s a woodworker also, thank you saving a all the JUNK !!!
The bowl you have just made is absolutely stunning. I'm quite impressed that you were able to come up with such a beautiful design with the off cuts you had. Great work.
Every time I thought, "Ok, that bit's finished" you went and added more detail, and then again on top of that, even *more*!
No wonder your channel is called EPIC Upcycling!! What a fabulous piece of art you've turned out here. Who will be the lucky recipient, I wonder? The imagination that's gone into this, and the attention to detail, I find staggering. And not only do you build this wonderful chest of treasures, treasure drawers, but you make the hinges, lock and key yourself as well! Absolutely beautiful; well done indeed!
Thanks Katherine ☺
Agree, the most amazing piece of workmanship I've seen. Filming and editing are top notch . BRAVO
I appreciate how you use a screwdriver not a drill. As a up-and-coming, younger woodcrafter, I forget to step back and remember that newer technology isn’t always the best absolutely love your work!
I’m a French Canadian , I’m from Québec . I love restauring Wood .
Let me tell you , you are thé best !!!!
Thanks very much :)
I'm watching this video again, n I'm amazed at his superior craftsmanship. 👏 👏👏🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
"One man's trash, is another man's treasure chest."
I have watched this man make some of the most beautiful pieces from pallets and am amazed at his patience.
A recent conversion about how all the old crafts are dying because they are not being taught and I watch this one and just wow! Hand crafted chest, hinges and lock with key. ♥♥I am doing my best to expose my grandson to every aspect of hand building, forging, gardening and hunting. The Arts must survive and flourish.
Crikey, talk about taking a 'labour of love' to the next level, this is just amazing, well done Sir!
Thanks very much :)
Making items out of pallets, is kind of like back in the depression, when people made dresses out of potato and flour sacks. Love it!
Here in Montana we keep an eye open for pallets because they're usually made from hard wood and all we really have is pine.
That was one of the most satisfying 47mins & 58secs in my life!🙏😌 Beautiful job!
Thanks ☺
I watched this entire video with my mouth open in astonishment. Sir, You can do anything. That chest is perfection! Wow
Thanks very much :)
Really, really good man! You do any praise before work's start? Really man, I see GOD IN YOUR ENTIRE JOB/FABRICATION PROCESS. Thank's for show and share us your directly GOD bless man! GOD BLESS YOU!😇🙌🙌😇
After the first few minutes of this video I was amazed of how much detail and the level fit and finish there was. I do some wood working myself and have watched thousands of wood working videos on UA-cam, I sat and watched this video twice. This piece he created is absolutely stunning and looks like something you would see in a museum somewhere. You would never know that was pallet wood. It is truly a heirloom piece that could be passed down for generations.
Thanks very much :)
I patiently waited until I had the opportunity to watch if fully without interruption. Totally worth it, amazing work.
Thanks very much :)
You. Made. The lock. Sweet mercy these are so awesome.
I AM AMAZED AT THE CRAFTMANSHIP YOU PUT INTO THAT. !!!!!! You can not find things built like that to last anymore. I promise you people will be useing that for years to come long after some of us are gone. Much respect for your talent. i thought i was impressed with wood alone than you started the metal work you just blew me away makeing all your own hardwear than even own lock and key mechanisms' We ARE NOT WORTHY GREAT MASTER LOL. I have decided to give you the name The Yoda of craftsman lol
Thanks very much :)
The chest is gorgeous, but making your own lock and key is hardcore. Well done.
Thanks :)
You are a master craftsman! As I watch your videos, I imagine you spend an equal amount of time on setting up new camera angles for each task, not to mention the editing time each video must require. I've no doubt you can make more money from uploading UA-cam videos than you could in selling each individual piece (not to devalue your product, this is just a great way to monetize the creation of a single piece). You're inspiring a whole new generation of craftspeople. Personally, I find watching these videos more soothing than anything else on UA-cam. Thank you!
Thanks very much :)
One like is not enough for this video.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍😍😍😍
The hands of Michaelangelo, the foresight of Einstein, and the patience of Job!
Blown away!!! I sure hope you have had at least a few apprentices. It would be criminal for such incredible talent to not be past to the next generation.
Wow!! The chest is a treasure all by itself. Absolutely stunning!!
i think this is the most spectacular pallet wood anything ive ever seen.
Nicely done! Reduce, reuse, recycle, and make cool stuff. Awesome build! 👍🏻
I can't imagine how many hours went into just the design! Then, how many more in the execution? It is mind-boggling. This is the kind of work the old masters of art and architecture would take on, knowing it could take years to complete. The great sculptures of the Baroque and Renaissance. The frescos of Michaelangelo, the flying machines of DaVinci. We love and enjoy them all yet today. I'm sure this piece will stand the test of time as well. I sure hope you put a maker's plate on this piece so people will have the provenance 10 generations from now! Incredible work!!
Thanks Barbara ☺
Well said, beautifully worded. . .
fabbed his own hardware, jinges n that lock...wow...i wanna see him do an entire kitchen, it would be freaking EPIC
WOW that's the most beautiful work of art I have ever seen in my life
As I was watching this, I thought if you had grandchildren, they would get a kick out of seeing this made! Of course, with the hidden drawers one can just imagine pirates and hidden treasures. However, it's too beautiful for a pirates' treasure chest. I was fascinated at the handmade lock and key.
Honestly, we don't see such beautiful craftsmanship these days. Everything is pre-made by CNC machines and simple plug and go these days. There's no more special and personal art given from unique woodworkers. I'm a 3rd generation craftsman, furniture maker! And I really love older, true, and unique craftsmanship. Plus, I have to admit that I really enjoyed your video. You have created a beautiful piece. Congrats on your pro work. You should be proud of your art! Really beautiful.
Thanks very much for the comments, Stephan :)
Absolutely stunning. Wow, wow, wow!
Great reclamation video. Shows how scrap or “trash” wood has potential to make something beautiful.
Thanks Paul ☺
Just when I think you can't get better........bang you make this.......excellent.
Thanks Richard :)
Dude..... That is just beautiful and masterful work.
Thanks Aaron :)
Thanks for posting this. I was thinking of making little simple boxes for my Grand daughters for Christmas. For like Jewelery or Ear buds, or whatever girls keep on thier nightstand/dresser etc....BUT NOW! They're going to have curved lids! I better get cracking.
I really have no concept of how many hours you spent, just tacking in copper dowels. That piece is worthy of being in a king's palace. Very good work, takes a patient and meticulous mind.
Thanks very much :)
@@EpicUpCycling For sure- I’m a novice woodworker myself, only use hand tools and it takes the patience of a deity to not start throwing things.
What an absolute treat to watch. MORE.
you are crazy good at what you do. a true craftsman. to take scraps and pallets everyone else just tosses and make something someone will treasure for years to come is inspirational.
Thanks Ronnie :)
Mind blowing levels of craftsmanship. I work with metal as a hobby and I know that hand-filing those thick pieces is long and tedious work. And the patience to add a thousand decorative rivets! Great video and a relaxing watch- much better than ones filled with noise and over-narration.
Thanks very much :)
You sir are relentless
One of the best videos i have ever seen on UA-cam and i have been watching UA-cam daily for 15 years !!
Thanks :)
Wow! God has blessed you with such talent! You are a genius , God bless .
The only comment I can make is that I have the same 18v drill he has. Your work is like magic to me, I do use pallets to work with but nothing compared to this craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing.
That trunk is amazing. Also very beautiful. You are quite an artist. Thank you for no music in the main part of the video.
Thanks very much, Jan :)
I have a lot of thoughts on this project and this video. But more than anything it's very humbling to me. I'm pretty sure I could pull this piece off myself. The only problem is I'd have to quit my job and work on it with all of my focus for 2 years full time. You sir have incredible patience and attention to detail. Your skills are next level. Never seen anything quite like it. Excellent work 🙌
Thanks very much for the comments :)
Absolutely outstanding! I have a million words I could use. But that sums it up in two. Okay, three. Extraordinary! Cheers
Thanks :)
When a guy reads the comments, i cant help but to agree. This man is phenomenal. What technique and vision. I only hope that i can build one or maybe two items to this epic quality. Good stuff sir. Thank you
This is so neat! You really have to look closely to see the lines of the big bottom drawer, and I have to admit that at a casual glance I would think it was simply a treasure chest. The metalwork is the icing on the cake. It’s incredible that you could make this from pallets and scrap wood.
I think i just found my new favorite channel
I love watching you work and produce the most beautiful things out off, what some people may call fire wood and scrap metal.
Not only are you a great woodworker but also a great metal worker. My dad was both aswell. Started out as a carpenter and then had to switch in the 60’s to “machine bankwerker” don’t know the word in English sorry. But he made al sorts of things out of metal. It brings back fun memories for me seeing you work. Love the Mjolnir like mallet ❣️
Thanks for your very kind comments :)
@@EpicUpCycling you’re most welcome.
The real treasure here is the level of craftmanship going into this project
This dude makes masterpieces
Looks like a labor of love for a loved one.
Absolutely fabulous build with not only talent woodwork but metalwork too.
Thanks Chris :)
Seriously good stuff and creative, Nice one!
Thanks Graham :)
Sir, if they told me that anyone was better than you among men I would not believe them. You are one of a kind! The attention to detail has me spellbound. I'm just smh like this guy is so so so skilled.
I have to admit I couldn't see it wqhen u began with the copper but now I give u all the respect in the world man.. U got it spot on and if that is for the wife then she's gonna be well pleased with u for spending the time to build that for her pal.. Fair ply to ya. U have real woodworking skills but u also made the hinges, the lock and the whole thing outa old pallet wood.. Salute to u Sir.. Hello from IRELAND and take care man..
Thanks ☺
The craftsmanship is beyond amazing. Personally, I would have liked knobs on the drawers. Maybe easy to open when the drawers are empty, but put anything in the drawer then not so easy.
I like the juxtaposition of your meticulous making and fitting of parts, with the almost haphazard way you apply your finish. It amuses me every time!
I actually got depressed thinking there wasnt going to be any metal accents...then you bought out the copper sheet...my faith was restored haha...this is a great build that i've been looking forward to. Thanks for sharing this great creation Jason.
Thanks Michael :)
Love your work, Jason. The hinges even had the appropriate creak😄
Thanks Phil. That creak took a lot of work :)
I think the thing I like the most about your videos is the sense of wonder. I watch the videos with a "now how is he going to do that?" and it's like watching magic as it all comes together in the most delightful way.
Ну как всегда!!! Круче КРУТОГО!!!🏆🏆🏆🏆👍👍👍👍
This man deserves the Nobel Prize of artisans!
You my friend are freaking amazing. I watch your videos and reminisce back 12 years ago when i had my shop back in Wyoming where i spent endless hours out there creating wonderful items. I gave that shop up to relocate and have been working on getting my life back where i can craft like that again. Kudos to you Sir Much Admired for sure,.
I know this is old,but that was incredible. The video popped up on a recommendation. I'm so glad I watched it. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
This stuff is so amazing I can only watch so much because my brain starts to hurt. The detail is staggering. I think my head exploded when he made his own hinges.
Every single additional detail of this made me go just absolutely feral, it was a joy to watch, I'm delightedly looking forward to consuming your entire back catalogue.
The more I watched this the better it got. Just when i thought i was impressed he takes ot to another level. Awesome build.
Thanks :)
I am always so totally blown away by the attention to detail that goes into each project for you, Jason. What an absolutely stunning piece of work this is. And have I said how much I love the keys? 💜
Thanks very much, Tracey ☺
Stunning as always. I wont repeat all the good things everyone else has said so well, but I really enjoyed the POV camera heading toward the bandsaw. Real treat.
Thanks very much :)
Master Craftsman. Amazed at your talent and artistry.
I have no words to praise him, only one word comes to mind: Master. Saludos dese Chile
I was IN AWE watching this BEAUTIFUL CASE being built piece by piece.
I even got a little teary-eyed as it came to completion.
THIS, my friend, is a WORK OF ART !!!
I surely hope it is in a location where it can be seen...
I will be watching this video again !!
Sincerely,
BRUCE
Thanks Bruce ☺
Aha! So that’s what the intricate locking mechanism was for. What a beautiful chest! Love the finish, the copper detailing, and the picture frame moulding in the cutouts especially on the curved surface. Great job 👍
Thanks Chris 🙂
@@EpicUpCycling this guy is truly a artist how his mind works he just goes God bless truly I just don't say
fabricating your own lock, key, and hinges is such a huge flex. I'm amazed. And I also got way too excited when you pulled out the sheet of copper.
i have been a sheetmetal worker for 15 years, this guy knows his shit.
true craftsman of metal and wood.
Normally, I watch these videos and am amazed at the cool details while being impressed that it all started as "junk." Today? My mind is blown by how complex some of the joinery is. Kudos to you
Thanks very much :)
Your attention to detail never ceases to amaze me. Epic is definitely the right word for this one.
Thanks Ben :)
You should fill that thing with those gold-colored $1 coins and glass colored gems! :D So cool!!
Very satisfying video! :)
35:35 So glad that you didn't use fire for an "antique finish", like it has come into fashion now.
Absolutely stunning! What can I say? The amount of detail, the patience to build, the creativity. Amazing.
Thanks a lot for sharing, this makes my day as it makes me believe their are more beatiful things than going to war, again.
Thanks very much for the comments, Wendy :)
I'm a carpenter and love all of this stuff its a shame in my shed/workshop we don't have the space for larger projects. Great work!! Lock is superb & wood aging/staining process brilliant.
du très bon boulot, très bien fait, on voit bien le travail de perfection, bravo
The pallet work had me entranced then came the lock making a master craftsman indeed lost for words hello from Australia
