Update: You can paint weights for just one side of a symmetrical object and the other side will be painted automatically if you use the Symmetry setting (go to Active Tool and turn on X Mirror), although it works only for brush/blur/smear tools, not for gradient. So after one side is done you can copy it over to the other side as it is shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/i9BaAhrt1yo/v-deo.html (weights painted with gradient will be copied as well)
Another quick way to make symmetrical weights: paint one side, delete half of the object, add a Mirror modifier, and the weights will copy correctly. You can also do this before painting the weights.

i just finished this tutorial and its pretty nice and honestly i thinkt the hardest part but also the easiest was the weight painting. but overall pretty good aside from a few odd things now working like how i thought but its alright.

To see this option you should select mesh and armature in a certain order: first click LMB on the fox body and THEN click SHIFT+LMB on the armature. Now when you press CLTR+P you will see this option
Instead of doing both sides, to make it easier, you can fix the weight paint on one side, then go to a tutorial that shows you how to mirror the weight paint it saves a lot more time. I am waiting for the animation video

Ok. I waded through your fox character modeling (had to set the playback speed to .5 however). I was really proud of myself. I was so excited to learn how to rig the little fellow. Unfortunately I am only 2.39 minutes into this rigging tutorial and have no idea what you mean by "We can only keep the Subdivision modifier". When I delete the mirror modifier (as you appear to have done) the head for instance, it deletes the mirror. Can you please explain further?

Sadly the mirror function doesnt work when I edit the weights on my character. Mirroring is enabled, but it only paints on one side of the x axis. 😢

I didn't delete the mirror modifier, I applied it (Ctrl+A)
