@@Skankhunter420 It's because it plays closer to real life, and people have this weird misconception about ship survivability due to Hollywood, just like they have a misconception about tank survivability. Example for tanks in warthunder, APFSDS performs just like it would in real life, they are often called long rod sabot and are specifically designed to be more effective against angled armor than flat armor, feel free to google about this on your own.
Edit: the biggest issue is the distances we are engaging at, we are far to close, especially for the ships, making to easy to pinpoint the conning tower and AA mounts to kill crew off. In fact AA crew shouldn't even be considered part of the total crew for Warthunder as they are not critical to the ships survival. This way ships can get their AA knocked out allowing for planes to have some more playability.

You forgot to mention that the vehicle has a spall shield in the back of the gun mantlet, and I heard that the spall shield when it was added to the game was like 50 mm of rolled, which should have been 20. And the tank was at 7.0 in RB it caused so much mayhem they started adding a lot of HEAT to tanks at 6.7 and stuff and now war thunder has APDS and HEAT in pretty much all freaking tiers now. Everyone was buying the IS-6 so fast Gaijin probably made a poop ton of money

IS6 has Tortoise syndrome. It was great when added, so they nerfed it, everyone learned the new weak spot so people stopped playing it, then because it's rare, people forgot the weak spots.
how can one not know about that MASSIVE copoula on the tortoise? Honestly, it looks nice, and all, but it is garbage when compared to a jgtiger (same pen, but with explosive rounds)... being killed by a tiger II frontally is a real turn-off for me - it is a TD, it is meant to look menacing and deadly - yet, when you face a Tiger II, it has the same trouble hitting the tortoise than the other way around (with the difference that TIger II has APHE and a turret)
@@limaTheNoob Because people panic and aim centre of mass. The cupola is a good weak-spot, but often just kills the gunner and you have a lot of crew. On the level, or if you angle a few degrees, the tiger 2 can't pen the majority of the front even at close range, and they can't pen the sides up to a decent angle either.
Up to 2k range (a range where even the cupola can bounce the tigers shell), the tortoise can still reliably punch through the turret face of the tiger 2, which it needs to expose to shoot at you, and is often 1 shot kill. Tiger 2 is good, but i rarely get killed by them frontally. Leo's the likes are a bigger threat with their HEATFS, but I find still rarely 1shot it because of the size, amount of crew and the fact the ammo is behind spaced armour, modules and tracks..
@@MrEsphoenix You are right in your statements. My only problem is: compare that match-up with JgTiger vs T34 or T29. That JgTiger is absolutely immune frontally ( sure, you can shoot the LFP, but good luck getting past the transmission, as conveniently usual with most german tanks), while the T-series tanks are an absolutely easy LFP OHK for any real german gun (in fact, I usually get rid of those T-series tanks with much lesser guns, as the soviet 85mm).
Tortoise can surely compete (especially if you consider that Germany players seem to be unusually bad, they simply don't learn to play the game - hence their struggle with things like the Jumbo, for instance), but, when in comparison with its counterparts (JgTiger or the Ho-Ri Prototype), it just pales out - unlike this behemoth of a tank called IS-6 (honestly, why can't Gaijin make heavy tanks actually HEAVY - hard hitting, SLOW moving, nearly invulnerable tanks? Starts with the KV1 and goes all the way up - heavies are just TOO fast, mobile).
I usually refrain from commenting HEAT-FS because, at that point, the game becomes pointless to me (everything is an easy target frontally, boring - I honestly found playing the US M48 too boring and somewhat easy, because wherever you shoot, you pen and either OHK or cripple the enemy tank... boring)
@@limaTheNoob This game gets very frustrating if you start comparing vehicles in such a way, and I never claimed the tortoise was the best SPG or anything.
My point was that the tortoise and is6 both went through the same life cycle of being OP, then nerfed and rarely played, and now are good again because people have forgotten how to deal with them, or are new and haven't seen them much.

The only thing I wanted to really say on your comment is that, while the cycle thing you point out is true, I think the tortoise has far more obvious weakspots than the IS6 (I almost never face either of them, but I know full well where to shoot a tortoise, while I have no clue on how to pen an IS6 frontally apart from, maybe, mantlet).
But, yeah, you are absolutely right. I kinda have to relearn how to have fun in the game, because I can very quickly turn into a sea in face of the abundant salt withing me.

I'm a new-ish player (mid 2018, maybe).... has the tortoise ever been such a great tank as the IS6, or something to be REALLY feared like this cancerous behemoth used to be? lol Not knowing the past, it seems to have always been "meh", while IS6 was invincible, and then got power crept to balance

From what I've read about the IS-6 it was a prototype diesel electric. It had no "transmission" but 2 independent electric motors. Similar to how a freight locomotive works. It was supposed to get a 125mm experimental gun but was given the 122mm for mock up purposes just to simulate the weight.
Phly can u go a series of grinding where u grind a tech tree? The fact that u get all of the vehicles handed to you on a silver platter kinda separates u form the rest of the community

I had the IS-6 since I first started in 2017 in fact it was one of my first ever premium vehicles. It was an absolute beast! I have a video clip saved on my Twitch where I charged in with two other buddies and I got 5+ kills, barely stopping and getting shots bouncing off my Tank left and right. those were the days.... until the Balancing Team attacked.... XD

12:18 Phly, you have to remember that the Soviets used diesel. So for a round to enter the rear like it did, it’s not unheard of for it to detonate. Diesel ignites under pressure and I’m sure that round would’ve cause enough to do something.

Phly, the only thing that reliably penned the is6 was the conqueror with its apds. Back when I still played war thunder it was my go to the moment I saw an is6 get a kill, it can ufp pen the is6 from almost 1km out, and the turret gets cracked by hesh

I swear this use to be 6.7, I will never forget how ridiculous it was. I was playing a map and is6 managed to flip over and it took at least 30rounds to kill all while everyone was aiming precisely because he was flipped over and couldn’t do anything.

damson wut? You need way more skill in WoT overall because there are more game mechanics in play. HP, camo, spotting, new equipment can give your tank some interesting memes to work with.
@@shmekelfreckles8157 Cant really see your side. WT requires more tactical skill, dedicated teamwork and placement/map knowledge due to the lack of arcade style game play elements. WoT is more of a point and click adventure game.. in my opinion. It really doesn't seem to take much to go from WT to WoT because its just.. easier. A lack of semi-realistic mechanics makes it an arcade shooter and not a semi-realistic (read, SEMI) slower paced tactical shooter. (Discounting speedy bois)
But hey if you like WoT better than you like WoT better. Play the games you like tbh

the reason it was so good at release was that the turret armor was 50mm more than it should have been, it was a nice "bug" and gaijin only fixed it weeks later when they sold enough is6

if it makes you feel better, I just had a good match in the T95 yesterday; 10 kills. on top of that, I basically soloed my side of the map against mostly German heavies. heavily armored tanks can be fun, as long as you don't run into a HEAT round to the face. (submitted to thundershow btw, crossing all external appendages for that shiny 5k GE)
I encountered an IS-6 once in my T-44 in a mixed battle and I had literally no idea where to shoot
IS-6 had bugged armor profile in 2017, it had around 250 mm armor front and side turret so you couldn't pen it even from sides, maybe even from rear. That's why it was overpowered and it was 7.0
Can we eventually get a "map advice with phly" kind of series eventually? I noticed some of that sort of stuff when you were on sands of sinai, and it would be really neat to have a mini series like that.

The American m41 walker bulldog, German m41, and the ru251 are the is-6 removers that I love the most because they can get cushy with the bushies and are heat monsters.

The IS-6 used to be at 7.0, with a 150mm gun mantle, with a 100mm spawling shield behind it, which was incorrect and has been removed, and the BR of the vehicle raised to 7.3.

That was a script. They released Tirpitz and Bismarck broken and ap shells were busted for a long long time, the game still takes control away from you when near an island even though you take the settings off.

Hey phloopy, I saw you enjoying ignoring the armor advantage of any armoured tank in your M10.
But how about taking that to the maximum? Take out the hidden gem of Japans premium tanks: The Chi-Nu II with its long phloopy schnaze.
It brings a 4.7 gun down to 4.0. a BR where you will have no Tigors, IS's or Jumbos around. The most oppulent tanks you can phace is a KV-1 maybe an M6A1.
All oph which the high-velocity APHE (Read: Ay Pee Age Ee) with 151mm oph pen will just ignore and cook the insides phaster than instant ramen.

Youre skipping a big detail, Phly:
That thing had a hidden plate inside the frontal turret armor, thus why the long 88, 20p and 90mm cannons couldnt pen it even tho in theory those cannons had more than enough power to penetrate (even the 90mm HEATFS struggled a bit to do so). Just like they did with the T-29 when it was introduced. Then, after a year or so, it was removed because it was "a bug".
T-29 actually has a spall liner just like the t34, now I don’t know if the is-6 has it historically.
It's so good at the moment because everything 8.3 upwards is being dragged up into the new premium tank black hole.
