I was the first maintenance worker who was assigned to alcatraz Island for the national park service. 1994-2018 and been volunteering on the island since retirement. When i got there it was a mess,40% of the windows you see i put in myself, 80% of hand rails,50%of the lighting in the cell house! on and on, you did a great job my friend!
You might of worked with my mom she worked in the bookstore for a while there. 1994.. I even got to stay the night, till some morons cut the phone line or something...then they stopped overnights for employees 😢 was an awesome experience...
Its amazing how the 3 inmates managed to escape alcatraz. The planning and precision used to execute the escape is something like out of a movie. Id live to visit there soneday
That must've been something. I always regret that we didn't tour Alcatraz, when we were in San Francisco. Excellent coverage, and tour, Nick... It must be a weird feeling to be in that supposedly escapeproof? prison. I've read theories on both sides about whether the escape was successful. I remember reading that a letter was sent to authorities, by one of the brothers?, within the past decade, telling of the fate of the escapees. The jury is out on its legitimacy. 50/50 Apparently, the brothers were exceptionally strong swimmers, and were used to swimming in cold water. We may never know for sure. I believe I read that the brothers never murdered, or hurt anyone. They did commit crimes, and were hard to contain though... Thanks again, Nick, very well presented...👏🌊🌊
Hello, we just found your wonderful video of Alcatraz. We’re sitting here in the UK. The two of us order of a heads found you and is really good. The way you do the video use pain slowly so you can see things you to stop at side so you can read them🇬🇧🇬🇧
34:27 hey Nick - “COOL” “WOW” “CRAZY” x 18 haha I couldn’t resist. I enjoyed your excitement. I’ve never visited there and unfortunately I never will so I got to enjoy seeing it through your camera. Thank you for sharing your visit with us. I enjoy your tour and thank you for stopping and getting a focused shot of the signage throughout the tour so we could pause and read them. I just paused at 34:27 when you said that the 3 men tried to escape from Alcatraz in June of 1962. They DID successfully escape from Alcatraz in 1962. They got out of the prison and were never caught on the island or in the water and were never heard from again. The bureau of prisons is embarrassed that they escaped and have never been caught and the marshals service like to say that they drowned during the escape but there’s absolutely NO proof whatsoever that they drowned or any proof whatsoever that they didn’t make it to the mainland. Thanks again! G
To play devil's advocate, there's no proof whatsoever they didn't drown and no proof whatsoever they made it to the mainland. It's fun to think they escaped, but the simplest explanation is the most likely.
Yea that was one of my favorite parts of the tour. Pretty sure it’s in this video. They just said they were never found and presumed dead. Thanks for watching!
@@TravelswithNick thanks for the reply but I meant more so how the letter that was sent to the FBI 4 years ago by one of the alleged escapees detailing where they were and how Morris was buried in Switzerland under another name
@@TravelswithNick when my mom worked there , I was on the island all the time...I went places where they don't take regular visitors, with the park ranger but it was an awesome experience. I slept in the first cell out the door on D block...it was creepy.bur fun
Excuse me guards, i saw 2 men in ghostface and jigsaw costumes fighting with uzis and mac10, they were holding about 2 medical syringes in their pockets!

A lot of scenes from the movie "Escape from Alcatraz" with Clint Eastwood, was filmed on the courtyard
Yes! That’s such a great movie. And a lot filmed right at the prison. Thanks for watching!
The showers aren’t different but almost the whole movie was filmed there
Got a pic with a bench paramount pictures left behind...was in shower room for some time.🤔
Watching in Ireland. Cool video. Lived in San for a year in 05/06 when it was beautiful, absolute kip now. Alcatraz was the highlight though.
Oh man I miss Ireland! We were there for our honeymoon in 2019. Can’t wait to go back. Glad you enjoyed this 😎✌️
Hi! what agency or tour did you use? and what was included besides the entrance? Thanks
We just bought tickets online on the Alcatraz website itself. Thanks for watching!

Great and interisting ..i love history..i would love to visit the prison some day...susie denmark.
I’m a huge history fan as well! I hope you can visit this place. Thanks for watching 😎✌️
Were there ever any plans to reopen Alcatraz as a prison??
Don’t believe so. It closed in 1963 and that was it. Thanks for watching!
Visited this past weekend. A mile and a quarter to shore. A former guard I think it was made the swim no problem. Or so I heard.
Thanks for watching!
You did not show the hospital wing 41:50 41:50
Did you see Frank Morris's cell ?
Yes we did it’s towards the end of this video
Ive been to alcatraz It was cool.
Such a neat place. Thanks for watching!
It was cool but the flies were so bad. I was just there on Monday.
That’s interesting I don’t remember any flies. We went in the cooler mo this though so that’s probably why. Thanks for watching!
How long did it take you to tour the whole island?
I think we were there for half a day. Got on the boat around 8:30-9am. Left around 2pm I think. You can stay as long or as short as you want 😎✌️
What did they do with the prisoners once Alcatraz was closed.
Where did they go??
I believe the prisoners were relocated to other prisons in California and other areas once closed. Thx for watching!
Marion Illinois,prison
@@johnelwart6665 yes it was and now there is florence, colorado
Have to ask did they talk about the 3 escapees? In regards to it recently potentially coming to light where they went after they escaped?

why the sink in the cell has 2 taps and one is higher? I thought that prisoners had only cold water, so way there are 2 taps?
Good question. I’m not sure. Thx for watching!
Was the bench from "escape from Alcatraz" still in the shower room? Been 20 years since i been there...🤔
I don’t remember seeing it but could’ve missed it lol. Thanks for watching!
