You get an automatic movement for the same price as a quartz PRX. I think it's a pretty decent deal, plenty of people are hesitant to buy a cheap Chinese watch, so another name-brand automatic in the under-$500 bracket is always good to see.
Citizen have been selling mechanical watches on the down low outside of Asia. Brand perception is very different in the west compared to Japan. Consumers don't really understand or appreciate tiering within the same brand and look down on Seiko and Citizen because of how cheap their lowest tier watches are. Seiko took years of expensive marketing to chance perceptions and I would argue they have had limited success and only really in the collector community. Citizen has chosen to buy western brands instead.
I think a lot of people expect Tissot levels of finishing for the same price. What you do get is a decent retro design from a well respected manufacturer at an ok price, an automatic for a similar price to the PRX Quartz. When Seiko are charging similar prices for a design they've used for many years on their 5KX I don't think the Citizen is unreasonable. It's not for me though.
I don't get why people are comparing this with the PRX as the automatic version isn't at a comparable price point, more than double the RRP in fact. The Tsuyosa is a good option for those wanting a stylish and affordable automatic that will no doubt be durable and reliable. Tissot quality and value is not all it is cracked up to be and given the price difference you could actually buy both a Tsuyosa and a PRX quartz (more convincing than the automatic IMHO) for the same price as a PRX automatic.
@@paulc9588The Citizen automatic is at a similar price point to the Tissot quartz. The Tissot automatic is about double the price. All things considered, unless I just wanted a Tissot, I'd go with the Citizen in this case.

@@redandblack1911I agree. And it’s from a well-known brand which is cheaper than those San Martin homage watches from Aliexpress. I’m planning to buy the two tone option with the grey dial. 😊
I have had mine now for about a year, and I am extremely pleased with it. Sure the crown is ridiculously small and the clasp is sub standard, but the rest of the watch is brilliant. It has that eye catching effect. I see on Chrono 24 they are selling at around $250.
Very fair and accurate observations of this watch. I am more than pleased with my Tsuyosa (it has the pebbly blue dial). I had a PRX, but I like this better. The Powermatic80 in my PRX developed a helicopter rotor situation after having it for about 3 months (I also had a MIDO with a version of the Powermatic80, and it also developed the same issue), I sent it back to Tissot to be serviced and it took quite a while to come back. I picked up the Tusyosa around that time. I had both watches at the same time for month or so (and there were ample opportunities to compare them) and then when the Powermatic80 in the MIDO acted up, I sold both the MIDO and the PRX (and I'm guessing that it will be some time before I think about a Powermatic 80 movement again). When I had both the Tusyosa & the PRX, the Tsuyosa got more wrist time. For my wrist, It's more comfortable and I prefer the look of the bracelet to the flat link looks of the PRX. As for cost, Citizen has priced it at $450 here in the US , but I was able to get mine from Masters in Time for about $280. $450 is WAY too much for this watch lol. I could not agree with you more about the clasp on the otherwise nice bracelet. What in the world are they thinking? And the crown is a bit small and hard for my sausage like fingers to easily use. It's a pretty good watch for less than $300, but would not look at it for much more than that. My experience is as told above, YMMV.
@@redandblack1911 This post was 6 months ago, and at that time the colorway I purchased was not available from Citizen USA. I had to get it imported. It may well be available now, I really don't know. Citizen USA was selling 4 or 5 other colorways here at the time.
One of my favorite watches! Finishing on mine was great! Dial color on these matter..... got yellow, one of the best. Love the fit on my 7.25 wrist. Bracelet is great. And regarding the price..... originally (and the one i got) the price for these were around 225 euros. They came to US market and price went up 🤦🏾♂️. Solid solid watch otherwise and always gets a compliment!
I generally wear a Rolex Datejust 36 as an everyday watch and I honestly buy watches that look sharp and expensive on my wrist, so beauty matters a lot. If a watch elevates my looks and what I'm wearing, I'm happy. For the price (budget price) there's nothing that looks as good as the Black Tsuyosa on my wrists. It looks expensive, classy, youthful, sharp ... Way more than the Tissot PRX. So as someone who isn't a watch nerd but appreciates beauty...this watch is really a winner and the best out there for the small price!! 😎👌
Stumbled across this for just over £200 on a Spanish webshop very early on. Two dealkillers for me - the cyclops and the movement. Citizen EcoDrives are so good I cant buy one of their autos even at a lower price. Seiko have the cheap auto market sown up for me with the NH's
Seems like a case of managed expectations. For $250-280 I'd think this watch is great, and it can be had for that price. But $450 is right out. Thanks for the honest review!
I have this watch in the yellow dial - I chose yellow over the Tiffany dial. A great watch, however, the crown is an absolutely HORRIBLE design for winding.
Do you generally think Citizen are poor quality? You kept saying you’re “surprised” when you realised it was an ok watch, like you were reviewing a Daniel Wellington 😂 Most owners as well as UA-camrs say Citizen are really good watches but guess you have had bad experiences in the past with this brand? That said I think this offering is overpriced with this particular movement and the lume is disappointing too.
Well, I bought one of these, and while it's not awful, it's not all that great either. The dial looks nice enough, but the lume is entirely useless. Citizen could do better. The 4 o'clock crown is difficult to use, and has no real advantage. The caseback protrudes well below the bottom of the lugs, so the watch stands much higher than it ought to. It's effectively too thick. The quality of the bracelet is fine, but I find the 5-part construction more blingy than I like. Overall it's just OK, and I don't wear it as much as I should, given the rather high price. I have a bunch (too many) of relatively inexpensive Seikos that I like better and wear more. Not to mention a few Chinese watches that offer much better specs and design for half the money.
@@shanephillips8735 Such a beauty! I was torn between that one and the white dial NB1050. I went for the latter because of the dress-down versatility the bracelet offered. If you bought it you'd have the best of both worlds, as I'm pretty sure the bracelet/strap can be swapped between the two if you ever wanted to.
Hey Gary, I agree with most of the things you said. If you find it for the right price (poor Americans), it's a nice watch. But you really should have picked another colour. 50% of the charme of this one comes from the vibrant colours. Cheers
This watch have one major issue and it's lack of 100m WR it's only 50 and i don't understand why, it is not a dress watch it's more sporty with loom and bracelet which is well integrated so let me jump in to the pool, if i can't swim with sporty watch than what's the point? i will go for proper dress watch....
In your opinion, not in mine though…budget watch is relative to, to people’s personal position and their perspective and in relation to other watches and prices but to label it the best budget watch of 2023 is not right
Got this for 240€ but i would've never payed more than 250 for this. Its a great looking watch with nice specs but it is not worth 300 pounds or 400 dollars
As someone who is (still) lusting over the the PRX, the Tsuyosa was kind of a swing and a miss to me. This video weirdly made me like it more 😂 I guess I just don't like when people are hyperbolic about anything
The crown is an absolute nightmare. I bought one and it looks nice enough. But the crown was a pain in the a** to the point that you can’t even wind the damn watch if you have big fingers like mine. My bracelet was also squeaky af. Sold it pretty quickly.
Hey Gary. I don't quiet get the review. The title is negative but you are saying mostly positive things about this watch, from the finishing to the comfort in the wrist to the quality of the bracelet. I'm among the admirers, although there are some negative points that you forgot, one of which is the poor water resistance and the crown that most people absolutely hate (you did mention that but may of my viewers dislike it more than our own conclusions lead to believe and with reason). But besides from that this watch is almost at the same quality level as the Tissot PRX costing less than half and it's even cheaper than the quartz PRX. Indeed, in Europe you can have it from between 230 and 300 euros, which is an absolute bargain for such a popular, hyped watch. I would love someone to name something coming even close from a major manufacturer at this price point and with this level of hype. Therefore this timepiece punches way above its league, the new king of affordable hyped watches I guess 😂. All the best mate 👍
I got mine for less than $300. I do wish the clasp was nicer and the crown a little easier to use, but overall I’m very pleased with it. Not a horrible value imo.
I love it. Why? It is the essence of what my skx is. It is comfortable, looks good, is affordable (you van buy them for 250 bucks) and it's very versatile.
Can’t wind the watch with your fingers or the appropriate tool. I can only wind mine from the bottom of the crown with my fingernail. For this reason I don’t recommend the Tsuyosa. Nice bracelet though.
Think that’s a pretty good review tbh. The comments about other reviews are maybe a bit unfair as it’s often a of click bate anyway. I would say you chose the most sterile dial colour, part of the draw with this piece are the colours. The bracelet is really good no idea how anyone could suggest otherwise. The finishing is excellent on the watch, personally citizen to me make better finished and better Q.c. Than seiko by quite a margin. You can get the watch £50-£100 cheaper than rrp, makes it a bargain to me. Personally I think it’s slightly too big, 38-39mm max. It just looks a bit chunky to me. 2mm too thick too. Citizen are so underrated, yes they make far too many different watches but they really make some of the best watches in the world too. The brand deserves much more love.
Its about $249 dollars in the USA for most colors. Its a good watch but not PRX good. But it is an alternative to it specially if you want a mechanical watch. The Prx is more than double the price. It is a budget watch after all
I own the PRX Chrono and the normal PRX, the Bulova Surveyor and the Tsuyosa....the are all better than the Citizen but I love the color of the dial, I got it as a birthday gift. It's good and nice but people like to overreact for views.
My first watch was Tissot gentelman. Blue dial, quartz. I love it. A few watches later, i fell in love with the PRX, tried it on, and it felt really cheap. I am sorry, but the bracelet feels too light. The whole watch has this cheap filing. And the lug to lug is really to big for my wrist. The small one looks funny. So yeah, Rolex killer no, but PRX killer,...
If you want to avoid Chinese watches, the Tsuyosa still has very little competition: Automatic movement + sapphire crystal + a well known brand name + sub 250€ price point. Some Orients can offer similar value but other than that there aren't that many options. The obvious weaknesses of the Tsuyosa include the cheap clasp and the loud rotor. Other than that I've not had much to complain about and the yellow sunburst dial seems to gather quite a lot of positive comments.
Why would anyone want to avoid chinese watches? As a British person I want to avoid American watches. Fortunately it's easy to avoid all American goods, because America makes nothing and contributes less
I love my tsuyosa. I love my prx auto. The prx....is farrrr superior. The miyota 8210 is just....im sorry.....it sucks. If this is a rotation piece it sucks, if its a one watch collection piece, its great! I do find it interesting however that some reviews state theres no hacking but theres handwinding, meanwhile mine hacks but seamingly does not hand wind (or the crown is just so recessed that winding is essentially impossible). The dials are beautiful and overall id recommend the tsuyosa. Again tho for the money i dont think u can be mad considering how the non-micro brand market is. The tsuyosa is priced well imo.
In the U.K. You can purchase it at just over £200 if you dig down the internet rabbit hole. I personally thought it gained attention from the dial colours that really popped.
I have a number of watches with the Miyota 8 series movement, and the indirect seconds hand drive for me is a pretty much a deal killer.. I have a Bulova Skeleton watch that has great looks, but that stutter in the seconds hand is just really annoying. I have several watches with Seiko NH34 movements and they simply outperform the Miyota 8 in everyway. I also have a Powermatic 80 based PRX that I purchased for on sale for $505.00. With my $120 non refundable cruise credit, my out of pocket went for $385.00 so it was a no-brainer. I think the PRX hype was over the top, but I also think the recent Anti-PRX hype is equally ridiculous. I'm sorry, but I have yet purchased a sub $1000 watch from Seiko or Citizen that matches the fit and finish of the PRX. The mix of finishing and attention to detail is off the charts. Both Citizen and Seiko have always made questionable choices in materials. I love my Seiko 5 GMT, but can't for the life understand why a $475.00 watch has to have a pressed metal clasp and mineral crystal. At one time, I hade a $250 Citizen that sported a Sapphire crystal when the $750 Skyhawk AT was mineral glass. (Citizen seems to be coming around on this front). I get it, the Swiss basically lost the war with the Japanese when they refused to acknowledge the impact that quartz technology would have on the watch market. But say what you will, in many cases the level of refinement you see in many Swiss watches is on the verge of obsessive, and it's for that reason that many Swiss manufacturers continue to rule the "high end".
I have 2 Tsuyosa's (black dial and tiffany) and i love them. Bought them second hand ofc, for 175 and 190euros (perfect state). Also got 2 PRXs. I love the Tsuyosa's alot and i want to buy the Two tone also. It's not PRX level.finishing, but it's definetely not far. I don't know what people can comment bad about this watch tbh. The cyclops it's decent also. For the price you can't really get anything better. I have a Seiko 5 SRPE and the bracelet is worse than the Tsuyosa's.
what are you expecting a Rolex for 300 Dollars ? This is a Fantastic watch for this price , the quality and Finishing are Satisfying , it could be better but again what the fuck are you expecting for 300 Dollars .......
Not $300 in the U.K., it’s £300 which is equal to $400….I sold my 9000 series powered dive watches built to a much higher standard for £150….so I’m expecting either more watch or for it to cost less….I thought I made that quite clear.
Saw this first time at the store this weekend, I didn't know citizen made prx homages. I was surprised at the details like display back, Sapphire crystal, and automatic movement. The date magnifier bothered me immediately, as well as the polished bezel . It just looked cheap (reminded me of the cheap chrome plated watches you buy at wallmart). The more I had it on my wrist, the more I noticed how cheap the dial looked. I understand why someone would buy this, but I just prefer the prx.
Recently I got my first automatic watch made by Jasnena Vlahova Design (jvd). It's a czech watch brand and gotta say it's a good watch. Sapphire glass too and runs without an issue. It's movement is seiko epson and I paid about roughly $250 and something
I have a collection of automatic watches ranging from an Invicta "sub" to my 18038 Rolex day-date. This is the only watch that makes me want to buy an automatic winder because of that DAMN SUCKY CROWN that can't be managed without girly-long fingernails.
$400 for +18 seconds per day? I’m normally not one to shit on a watch brand because of one person’s review, but that’s wild. I have $80 Aliexpress watches in my collection that are +/- 4-5 seconds per day. That’s nuts.
It's a nice watch, but I definitely don't regret getting a PRX instead. The quartz dial is so underrated (and I found one new for only $220 because of it)
I am in Europe where I bouthg this watch for 215 eur brand new. It is a good watch for that price for sure. Not worth 400bucks for sure and certainly not as good as a PRX (it shouldn't, it costs 3x less).
Yeah but nah but thank you! Just out of a principle for $200 one can find an Ali Express watch that will wipe the floor with this Cheapo Genta specs-wise.
I think the watch is great and the specs may not be amazing as far as it’s comparison the bracelets is so comfortable. Lots of 200$ watches in seiko market you’d need to replace the bracelets.
You want a killer watch? Design a watch that the owner/user can swap the dial without specialized machinery. If I’m getting a sporty/dressy steel watch I can wear with my suit/sportcoat at work I’d love the option to match my outfit without having to buy Five different watches. I wouldn’t even need to have a watch winder anymore!
Take off the magnifi lens, make it 100 WR, and give it the 9000 series, better clasp under 500 eur and it could be the "PRX killer" some enthusiast say
The four problems I have with this watch at this price point are number one the second hand is so thin as to be virtually invisible especially as it rounds at 12:00 position. Number two the two digit date is incredibly difficult to read especially with the cyclops which apparently has no advantage whatsoever. Number three the crown at the 4:30 position is impossible to wine manually with two fingers and is difficult to set the time in the third position. And last again at this price point having a stamped clasp instead of a milled one is ridiculous especially if a Chinese company like San Martin can do it for a lot less.

@@paulc9588The Citizen automatic is at a similar price point to the Tissot quartz. The Tissot automatic is about double the price. All things considered, unless I just wanted a Tissot, I'd go with the Citizen in this case.
@@paulc9588Where I live the PRX Powermatic 80 runs around 17000-18000, while the Tsuyosa's are around 7000-8000
currency nevermind, don't want to reveal more
$225 USD total makes this a damn solid watch IMO. Only question is, what color to go with...
I would buy this one for £300 if it had the 9000 series movement.
With its current spec, £200 seems like a fair price.
Yeah that would be an interesting upgrade
I thought it wasn't sold in the US?
$225 USD total and it's a go, amirite?
The stuttering seconds hand is so dumb and cheap looking. What did they save, 2 pennies per unit by doing that? So lame.
It's nice enough, i suppose. But why bother putting an integrated bracelet on such a vanilla watch? I'd rather have options for this one.
Seems very ordinary, I'd say a stuttering second hand sounds like a fault but I've heard a lot of them do it, not acceptable to me.
NB1050 all day long, around the same money, but waaaay better
It is an attractive watch, the price is acceptable. It isn't Rolex quality, let's be honest. I like it, though 😊
I honestly think it's worth it if you manage to get one for around 200$.
I know it's JDM, but the Citizen NB1050 is superior in every way.
An overlooked gem of a watch.
I have the black dial and it is such a great watch, was even thinking about picking up the NB1060 white lacquer dial
@@lefroy1 This is exactly my thinking, it'll happen sooner or later
@@lefroy1 ...and imagine how much you'd have to spend to get the Seiko equivalent.
@@shanephillips8735 Exactly! _THAT_ dial as well as the (Zaratsu polished) case is Grand Seiko territory IMO.
Over priced Walmart watch. I like the watch at $90.00..
First couple of minutes just highlights that 99% of the internet is absolutely full of shit.
Hey Gary, I agree with most of the things you said. If you find it for the right price (poor Americans), it's a nice watch. But you really should have picked another colour. 50% of the charme of this one comes from the vibrant colours. Cheers
This watch have one major issue and it's lack of 100m WR it's only 50 and i don't understand why, it is not a dress watch it's more sporty with loom and bracelet which is well integrated so let me jump in to the pool, if i can't swim with sporty watch than what's the point? i will go for proper dress watch....
this IS a budget watch and it looks great. except for this white dial version
In your opinion, not in mine though…budget watch is relative to, to people’s personal position and their perspective and in relation to other watches and prices but to label it the best budget watch of 2023 is not right
I got the yellow one and love it to bits
Faded Turquoise dial and it's gorgeous!
Got this for 240€ but i would've never payed more than 250 for this. Its a great looking watch with nice specs but it is not worth 300 pounds or 400 dollars
It always looked underwhelming. I don’t understand the hype. It looks cheap
Bet mine keeps better time than your best expensive auto + 1 sec a day on wrist 😊
Citizen makes the most boring watches.
Sold it pretty quickly.
i think this is one of the things that makes this watch unique , i like it .
DIFFERENT OPINION = lies? wtf
You’ll get more attention if you overhype a watch and exaggerate how good it is which many UA-camrs do intentionally to get more views and subs…
or they just think its a really good timepiece for the money @@ilikewatches
Just got a blue one for $320 AUD on Black Friday sale, can’t fault it for that price 🎉
I got mine for less than $300. I do wish the clasp was nicer and the crown a little easier to use, but overall I’m very pleased with it. Not a horrible value imo.
clasp is an easy fix with an aliexpress milled clasp.
hmmmmm, makes you wonder what motivates some reviewers, at least a touch, eh?
I don’t think on this occasion it was money I think some channels just like to hype up crap for views and the algo
Apparently, I need to use more click bait titles for my videos and thumbnails. I was able to borrow a black dialed version for video presentation.
I some feel I need to as well…😂
Telling it like it is keeping it real no bullxxxx thanks gary
Thank Michael
Not even a tissot killer
I love it. Why? It is the essence of what my skx is. It is comfortable, looks good, is affordable (you van buy them for 250 bucks) and it's very versatile.
It’s very nice but I don’t know about $400
Can’t wind the watch with your fingers or the appropriate tool.
Automatic, Tiffany blue, sapphire, presidential type bracelet for under £300 in my opinion is well worth it, got mine for £200 today brand new
My first watch was Tissot gentelman.
😂 where to Japanese and Swiss watch brands have their cases and bracelets made….China 🤦🏻♂️
10:15 If you don't think it's a budget watch then what do you think is? remember the category it's in, automatic movement, repariable so not swatch.
Looks like a meh watch to me
what are you expecting a Rolex for 300 Dollars ? This is a Fantastic watch for this price , the quality and Finishing are Satisfying , it could be better but again what the fuck are you expecting for 300 Dollars .......
Not $300 in the U.K., it’s £300 which is equal to $400….I sold my 9000 series powered dive watches built to a much higher standard for £150….so I’m expecting either more watch or for it to cost less….I thought I made that quite clear.
To be fair, we all ought to be grateful. My disposal spondoolas are safe with this one on offer. That’s £ 300 you could put toward a Helm, or a PRX.
agreed!
The quartz dial is so underrated (and I found one new for only $220 because of it)
I’m not sure the comparison between the quartz prx and the tsuyosa works.
I am in Europe where I bouthg this watch for 215 eur brand new. It is a good watch for that price for sure. Not worth 400bucks for sure and certainly not as good as a PRX (it shouldn't, it costs 3x less).
i got the yellow dial i wear it i like it... lovely summer watch each to their own
$450? A PRX isn't much more than that. I will always spend more for Swiss. I think Casio should do a PRX homage for under $100. Or have they already?
It is an average watch, Not a King of anything!
King of Average?
Yeeeah, no chance I'd ever buy that at retail/£300. Maybe at 50% off,... but actually there are other watches I'd want to spend that money on
Take off the magnifi lens, make it 100 WR, and give it the 9000 series, better clasp under 500 eur and it could be the "PRX killer" some enthusiast say
Seiko SUR 555 looks nicer. And - for an every day watch - has the advantage of being quartz.
What is then 300 dollars better watch ?
Seiko SBTM’s, every San Sartin, almost every $300 microbrand watch I’ve ever seen. The 8000 series movement is not popular.
Thank you so much for this 🙏🏻👌🏻. It is overhyped.
VERY!!!! but thankfully not by all reviewers, some reviews were balanced and fair I think.
Well, I got mine for around $300. I live in SEA and definitely a budget option here.
There's something about Citizens that i find unattractive. I'd just get a PRX because of you get this you'll always wish that you got that instead.
I came late to this review, but I do think they are some of my favourite watches of 2023. The are really beautiful.
I quite like it but i paid £160 for it brand new. I think it was a decent deal
Just never been a fan of Citizen aesthetics...with a few exceptions. I've read some reviews saying that Citizen is better than Seiko dollar for dollar.
I've looked at a lot of Citizens and own a lot of Seikos. Seiko is a better value hands down. And Orient is even better.
