  • Hey Everyone! Welcome to my 2021 Reading Journal Flip Thru. It's about time right?!? Finally I managed to make time to do a flip through and just kind of chat about what worked and what didn't as well as some of the books I read last year. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I will try my best to answer.

    There is a section on goodreads for upcoming releases. If you go to the "browse" drop-down menu there's a tab for new releases and you can look by genre or by author's you've read from before. They're typically separated by month.

    I like both of them. If you love to do a full spread of the books you love. Do that! I don’t think you are wasting space doing both a full spread of a book and then doing the review on another page. Just as long you enjoy to create and using your reading journal.
    I love how beautiful all the spreads are in the journal. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤

    I love seeing how others do their reading journal because everyone does theirs a little differently. Yours looks so organized and tidy! I think it's up to you, but I also love writing down my thoughts about a book because otherwise I'll forget everything. What you can do is use small cut out/inserts for your thoughts and paste it into the spread. That way, you get to have both an aesthetic spread and a place to write a review. I've used both a fold-out method and also pasting it in with a frame/border.

    Thank you for a very informative video! Honestly, you can't do it wrong! I love all your spreads, and I don't believe that you have to be consistent or limit your style to one. For my reading journal, the more I loved the book, I gave more time, energy, and pages, but I always leave my thoughts and reviews somewhere so that I can revisit the book and feel them all over again. The purpose of my reading journal is memory keeping as well as to spend a little more time in that world after finishing a book. If it's easy to say good bye to, I just do half or third a page of rating and thoughts. Anyway, I'm already looking forward to your 2023 reading journal! 💖

    I do a spread (or single page) to write my thoughts and reflections about every book I read. My trick to use up space is to make a standard layout: 2"x3" cover; stats about the title, author, publisher, number of pages, and when I read it; and generous margins to keep the text together. If it's a book I absolutely adore, then I draw, doodle, or decorate in the margins to add some color to the spread. Or I fill space with a quote I enjoyed from the book. That's how I stay interested in my reading journal. Decorations are specific to books I enjoy, and I don't waste time expanding on books that were just okay. And I leave the habit tracking and calendars to my main planner.

    I don't actually keep a reading journal since I don't read nearly enough for that lol buuuut I really like your smaller columns with thoughts on the books, that seems more doable for someone like me who doesn't really have a page or two worth of thoughts on most books.
    You could always do a mix, do a big spread for books you super loved or maybe just one for your favourite books that month and do little thoughts for others? You could also use the spread to be both artsy and thoughtful, like have one of the pages just art and the other thoughts and quotes.
    At the end of the day I'd say whatever makes you the happiest since it's your journal ^^

    I love your decorations and spreads, great book journal.
    For new releases I can recommend Goodreads although for me it's mostly for following my favourite authors to allways know their releases (but it can offer much more than this). The only thing I add to that is some of my favourite Booktubers when they are talking new releases. To be fair I don't have time for much more books with my love of rereads (high five!) and really long backlog...
    I love both your bookspreads and your booklists. For me the full spread is for the book I really want to stay with after reading. Spreads are helping with that sort of book hungover where one needs a bit more time with this story and characters before diving into another world. And I think that it can be anything ones want to do about a book and whatever gives most pleasure. On the other hand I wouldn't like ommiting in my mini reviews or other type of list any book only because it is done as a spread. The lists serve another purpose and I really like to have all books I read there.

    • @TracyTylerRevell
      @TracyTylerRevell  Рік тому +1

      Yes! Exactly! The full page spreads are great for book hangovers of my favorites. I think I could have a whole separate journal for my thoughts on rereads 🤭. I do a mix of spreads for my book reviews. If it is a favorite or makes me feel something I will do a full scrapbook style spread with quotes, thoughts, images etc. If it was a good/decent or even not so good book I just do a smaller 1/2 page writeup just a blurb of my thoughts and the rating. Don't switch to a travelers size because it will limit what you can do for the full spreads you might want to create. Your journal work is beautiful!

    • @TracyTylerRevell
      @TracyTylerRevell  Рік тому

      Thank you so much! I’m curious, if you have half page reviews, do you have some half empty pages? Or are your reviews not in the order that you read them? @@TracyTylerRevell I do them in somewhat of an order but I don't do monthly spreads. I have my journal divided into 3 parts one is my goals, shelfie, tbr, and yearly stats. The second section is challenges, bingos, etc. The third section is reviews. If I do a half page review I typically will have another one I can put in for that same month (roughly). I really like the creative spreads you make, but in general I just enjoy watching you create. I say do what you have time for and what works for you. I personally haven't figured out how to "review" my books in my journals yet. I can't draw to recreate scenes and I struggle to find awesome images. I also struggle for the words for reviews. I use my reading journal to track how long it took me to read a book (i just like the visual it creates the way I do it), my possible TBR, Days read, books hauled, and books read. My books read spread is a page with boxes with the title, author, format and star rating. I would really love to figure out how to do review spreads.

    Have you ever heard of the spiraldex which allows you to track how you are using your time each day? I've created a year of monthly calendars with a spiral on each day for 2023 on which I hope to track the hours spent reading, gardening, watching UA-cam, movies, sleeping and other activities. My goal with the spiral dex tracking is to help me see where I'm wasting time and motivate me to spend my time on things I want to do more of. I may create a note pad with a draft spiral to work on each day (marking the date and start stop times) as I record my times and transpose the daily notes into my journal each week.
    I like to see your reactions to each book. And a personal affirmation or resolution that the book inspired. Maybe add a glossary of vocabulary words you learn from a book, words you may have been compelled to look up.
    I love to see challenges, like the A2Z, I have pasted world maps and USA states maps in my journal and am coloring in countries and states as I read books primarily set there.
    I also have a compass rose with lines to capture books I"ve read that contain a cardinal direction in the title. Maybe add a page with favorite authors of the year with a picture and short bio and list of books they've written that you'd like to read in the future with a tracker icon.
    I have a spread for birdwatching (books with birds in the title and as I read a bird book, I print a line drawn image of the bird and color it and paste it on my bird spread noting the name of the book.
    I do the same with a flower garden of books with flowers in the title.
    I have a Do the Dewey spread to encourage me to go to the library and read non fiction found on the Dewey shelves.

Or in a spread use one side to be creative and the other for review/thoughts, so one book per spread like with Fable. I love all of your spreads (and that watch band!) I set up my month but then I do the book spreads after I read them, so if I love a book it gets a huge 2 page spread with review and quotes and all the bells and whistles. If I don't love a book, I grab some scrap paper and write down title, author, rating, my thoughts, and quotes (even bad books have good quotes...sometimes) and then I stick that in the back pocket of my journal. Once I have enough ones I didn't love (or the month is coming to a close) I pull them out and do a 2 page spread with all those reviews, each one getting smaller page sections unless it upset me much that i need to vent and it becomes longer lol.
    I dont really want to determine how much space I "have to" fill for each book before I read them. Does that make sense? :) this way I'm not wasting too much creative energy on books I didn't like.

    I love your book journal. I started one when we were all down with covid . Mostly a monthly list. How do you obtain the book cover’s? I would love to have an image rather than a list. Thanks!

      Thanks! I go to Goodreads and take a screen shot of the book cover, resize it in Pages and print it on sticker paper. You could also find the book cover image on Google.

    Do you only use A5 bullet journals?

      I have used B5 and A5. I think I prefer the A5, the larger one can be a bit intimidating on those months when I’m struggling creatively. 😂 But I could probably get 2 days per page with the B5…🤔 now you’ve got me thinking. 🤣

    OMG Why aren't you drawing anymore? I like both ways but if I was as talented as you are, I would definitely be drawing. You are sooooooooooooooooooo talented. I think it's also great to do BOTH. Switch it up from month to month. It's makes it more interesting when you go back and re-read this journal years from now.........LOVE your channel, I just found you.......

    I love the arty stuff but I know what it's like to go through your reading journal & not be able to remember what it was about because you didn't write a review. So I think the very arty stuff can be for the month's cover page.
