Dude stop self deprecating! You are my go to guru. What you describe exists in the music industry. You have musos and then you have audiophiles. Your honesty backed by your ability to be so dam down to earth and knowledgeable at the same time is why you are so successful so please don’t stop being you!

Haha mate thank you so much! As someone who considers themselves a generalist not a specialist you totally run into this sort of ‘you must be this tall to ride’ mentality in all sorts of fields. The self depreciation isn’t going anywhere though, still got that Aussie tall poppy syndrome deeply ingrained for now 😉

Great video. Really enjoying your channel, here in England! My strong experience is that those that have some knowledge and enthusiasm for wine have, or quickly learn, humility. Because we have all, say, wrongly identified the variety, the vintage, the country, the price band etc. We learn, get over it and go taste more wines.

+1 for using flogs in the correct sense! Also great shout for the same region note with a tasting. Thanks big H!

Thanks for the video. I appreciate the point of view of trying wines from the same region rather than the same type of wine (i.e Cab Sav) from different regions/countries. Personally, as an absolute beginner, I liked to try a single grape variety from different regions first to try and identify the general characteristics and potential of the grape. Only after somewhat understanding and appreciating the general characteristics of the grape type (with different climate, terroir and harvesting time nuances), I found it interesting to compare and contrast other types of wine of the same region (I live near Swan Valley and visit Margaret River on occasion). Personal preference I guess...
I am also one of those nerds who has bought a bottle of wine and experimented with different timed glass pours for aeration to see which glass tastes best. Then buy the wine again and drink it at the preferred aeration time.

Was chatting to a MW recently and he loves the trend for Zoom Tastings. He has observed that there is so much more great interaction. It seems we are much less inhibited when online, less frightened to raise a question that might seem silly or show our lack of knowledge. Hopefully this will permeate into physical tastings.

That's a really interesting point - I suppose there's pros and cons of digital vs in-person tastings right? I've not heard that perspective before - thank you!

Discovered your channel over the Easter hols. Loving your work! On our last trip to Oz we discovered Lino Ramble in McLaren Vale. Such a passionate wine maker. And yes Henry, Margs makes Riesling. Thanks for showing the Frog bottle in this video. We got to see the 4 original artworks of the frog. I have one bottle, now I need the other 3 versions. Love all your blind tasting videos. Keep up the great work guys and hopefully see you on our next visit (2027 rugby world cup)

My problem is that no one else I know is as passionate about wine so I just end up feeling like the wanker. Now I just shut up, unfortunately the owner of my local bottle shop indulges me so I keep buying off them.

Great points!! Wine only has one purpose, to bring the drinker pleasure, unless you’re taking an exam. 🤣🤣. Tasting groups are fun. Our last one was on faults and light strike. We had 4 rose’s all spent different time in sunlight or artificial light with one never leaving the box, (got the idea from Konstantin Baum 😎) we tasted them blind to see if we could tell which was which. Then I prepared 6 glasses with different wine faults from my sensory kit and the group tried to identify each one. Sometimes we do blinds, sometimes we do quality, but we always have a good time.

You are clever enough, Henry. You just don't have the knowledge yet. You'll get there, and being a beginner-intermediate (like I am, although I'm more beginner), is perfectly fine. Everyone has to start somewhere

I love wine but it really does feel like there is so much cosplay involved in it. We can all just have fun without acting differently because we have a wine glass in our hand.
I'd also add a couple super basic tips:
    1. Don't over aggressively swirl - just a little is fine
    2. Shorter sniffs because if you just jam your nose in the glass and inhale deeply you'll probably get all the alcohol burn and miss the good stuff
    3. People will smell and taste different things so don't get hung up on it. I think stuff like body and length matter a lot more and will carry over from person to person more consistently.

Cosplay is a good way to put it! We much prefer people that can remain down to earth while drinking the good stuff! All fantastic tips thanks so much for sharing - you sound like we'd be pretty good drinking buddies :)

Wine people ...... pretentious...... who would have thought !
I have been to a few cellar doors in my local area (Yarra Valley) and what I found extremely off-putting were the staff at these tastings spoke like ......... yep .... w******** to the point of being somewhat condescending.
Not really good for educating the public and trying to bring wine to the masses . . . . and for sales.
Love the concept of a wine tasting night as a game of guess the variety, region etc.
Great mates with great food and great wine to match.

Oh that's so frustrating! And I suppose that just meant you weren't into the whole experience right? Great Mates + Great Food + Great Wine - who would've thought the algorithm for happiness could be so simple?
