The Beach Boys were one of the biggest bands in music history. They are among the 15 biggest selling artists selling more than 200 million records world wide. They were also one of 3 American acts that were not affected at all by The British Invasion (the other 2 were Elvis Presley and The Four Seasons). Their biggest hit is probably "Good Vibrations." My 2 personal favorite songs are "Surfer Girl" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

I mostly agree but I slightly disagree. The Beach Boys were slightly effected by the British Invasion. The Beatles had the top ten largely locked out much of the time. The Beach Boys were able to make the top ten frequently, but I don't think they ever achieved #1. Despite the competition, The Beatles and Beach Boys kept inspiring each other to make better and better music. The Four Seasons still had hits but they declined after the Beatles came. I think Elvis was already considered king at the time, so there's that. Roy Orbison, I believe, was the only American artist two reach #1 during the British Invasion and that was with "Oh, Pretty Woman" (which Robsquad needs to react to.)

@@heyhey1956 Not to start a disagreement but there's videos of them playing a lot of their early hits live. Brian used The Wrecking Crew for Pet Sounds but he might as well played the instruments himself as he directed every single note with all the perfectionism of Steely Dan. And Frank Zappa even remarked, paraphrasing, thank God Brian gave us Little Deuce Coupe.

@Ron Moll 100% very much a healthy competition. The British Invasion took nearly all of its roots from American blues and R&B, and to some extent, skiffle.

YOU WERE ONCE QUOTED AS SAYING SOMETHING LIKE "GOD ONLY KNOWS" IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN.
PAUL: "It's a really, really great song---it's a big favorite of mine. I was asked recently to give my top ten favorite songs for a Japanese radio station...I didn't think long and hard on it, but I popped that ["God Only Knows"] on the top of my list. [Thinks for a moment] It's very deep. [Quotes the lyrics to "God Only Knows"] Very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. There are certain songs that just hit home with me, and they're the strangest collection of songs...but that is high on the list, I must say."

This was a cover song. The original by The Regents was a hit that went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1961. The Beach Boys version went to number 2 in 1965. The Beach Boys were huge in the 60's. They held their own after the British Invasion with the Beatles coming on the scene in 1964. Their major hits were "Fun, Fun, Fun" "Surfin' Safari", "Surfin USA", "Surfer Girl", "Little Deuce Coupe", "California Girls", "I Get Around", "In My Room", "Help Me Rhonda", "Good Vibrations", "Sloop John B", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "Good Timing", "Kokomo", among others. They sold over 100 million records. All of their songs were famous, they had 4 number 1 hits, "I Get Around", "Good Vibrations", "Help Me Rhonda", and "Kokomo". I would say that "Good Vibrations" was their biggest and most famous song.

I went to a Joe Walsh concert in the early 70s, the Beach Boys were touring with him and played first. Never was that huge a BB fan but after I saw them, the amount of respect and appreciation I have for them as entertainers is 100 fold. They rocked Texas Stadium and vamped up the whole crowd that covered the football field as well as every seat in the house. Dennis Wilson started the set in a 3 piece suit but because he was working so hard, the hotter he got the more he took off. By the time their set was over, he was wearing Bermuda shorts and a wife beater! And the audience including myself were loving it! Truly the best show I ever saw and I've seen some great ones.

They isolate their heads and stay in their safety zones
… Now what can you tell them
And what can you say that won't make them defensive
      … I know there's an answer
I know now but I have to find it by myself
… They come on like they're peaceful
      But inside they're so uptight
      They trip through their day
And waste all their thoughts at night
… Now how can I come on
And tell them the way that they live could be better

Tom Beyerlein's comment is correct. This is from their album "Beach Boys' Party!" which was a concept album as though they were casually playing acoustic songs at a party. They didn't have time for new material, all the songs are covers (including this one) except one Beach Boys medley. Dean Torrance sang co-lead on this. "Beach Boys' Party!" directly preceded "Pet Sounds". They released a box set not too long ago which includes the songs without all the party chatter.

According to the official beach boys story this wasn't a spur of the moment thing. It was rehearsed a lot and was sold as an impromptu song but it was anything but. Written by Brian Wilson the record company wanted to make them sound like they were still ordinary guys underneath all the fame etc. People bought the idea not knowing the truth.

The Beach Boys were huge. They were masters of this breezy, bouncy summer sound. I think that Good Vibrations, which I believe you've already done, is their masterpiece. They went to a new level with their 1966 album, Pet Sounds. God Only Knows would be a great reaction song.
It's easy to underestimate the complexity of the Beach Boys sound, maybe because it feels so easy and fun. The tight harmonies are tricky and required a lot of corrdination. Brian Wilson was the brains behind the operation. He's a musical genius.

This is a remake of a '61 song by The Regents. The "Beach Boys Party" album it was on was contrived to deliver a contracted album while Brian was working on their "Pet Sounds" masterpiece. They recorded it in studio (with The Wrecking Crew), and then added the party sounds and ad libs to the completed tracks.

This is from their Party album, is basically just an album of the Beach Boys sitting around with some friends kinda goofing off. I recommend reacting to "God Only Knows" which showcases what happens when they put serious effort into their recording.
The other named women are from other songs:
    "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly
"Hello, Mary Lou" by Ricky Nelson
"Betty Lue's Got A New Pair Of Shoes" by.... not sure who originally, but later by Eddie & The Cruisers 😉
The Beach Boys biggest hit was probably "Good Vibrations" which y'all have reacted to.
Oh and the ending was cut off on the recording you reacted to, so.... you haven't heard the whole song yet.

Good Only Knows is my favorite as well. Paul McCartney of the Beatles heard their singing Pet Sounds and was so blown away by it, he said couldn't write a song for 6 months. He said he couldn't compete with that album. John Lennon convinced him to try and the wrote Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. McCartney still says that God Only Knows from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is the most perfect pop song ever released.

I collected all LPs and cassettes they ever put out and this song is from the Vinyl LP "Beach Boys Party". From about 1965. I saw the original group live at Notre Dame ,here, in Indiana back in 1973, where their roadie at the time (Jerry from Manchester ,England) came up into our seating area and we chatted for a while before the concert started. I also was in their warehouse studio out in California (Brother Records) back in 1975. Peace. (Check out Surf's Up LP/CD.) They were the biggest American band at the time the Beatles arrived in the mid '60s. They did world tours.

The Beach Boys and The Beatles were essentially in direct competition with each other. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was their response to Pet Sounds which is Brian Wilson’s masterpiece. The sixties was a great time to start listening to music! BTW, my mom, who just turned 89 last week, would have Bach and Scott Joplin on 8 track blaring all over the house while she was cleaning, lol. And I learned to enjoy their music too!

Beach/Surfer music was huge out west. During that time,(early to mid 60's), the beach party movies, (with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon), were also popular! This was before the hippie movement of the late 60's. Hippie style became popular around 66-67. At that time the Beach Boys did Good Vibrations, and overall pop music began to change with the Beatles release of their Rubber Soul album in 1966.

The Beach Boys were absolutely huge in the 60s and became even bigger after. They were basically The Beatles of The United States, and The Beatles and Beach Boys had a friendly rivalry back in the day. The Beach Boys were HUGE about the time this song came out, but the more Rock acts kind of put them (and others) into the background later in the sixties. Plus the tech improvements in recording and instrumentation seemed to drive out vocal harmonies. But a lot of great music came before the Rock era.

This was originally done by The Regents. They did this Song on An Album called Beach Boys Party. It was like an Early Version of MTV Unplugged. This was before Brian worked on Pet Sounds. Also at the last minute Jan & Dean another Surfing Act joined them. Brian wrote Surf City for them and sang Backup and when it went to Number One before I Get Around, his Father was angry because he felt that he Gave Away The Number One Song. In future years, The Beach Boys Music was used along with The Isley Brothers & Smokey Robinson as some of the most used songs for Commercials selling everything like Cars, Cleaning Liquid, and this Song was used to Sell Kraft BBQ Sauce.

The Beach Boys are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a major reunion tour in support of That's Why God Made the Radio, their 29th album and first of new material since 1992. The band has built up a staggering body of work over the past five decades, ranging from brilliant bubblegum singles about girls, cars and surfing to their melancholy masterwork, Pet Sounds.
