Jan and Dean are a duet very similar to The Beach Boys from around the same time period. A couple of popular songs by them are Surf City and Deadman’s Curve. There is a real life tragedy that befell them early on in their career that was made into a tv movie titled Deadman’s Curve. I suggest Surf City as a first listen though. I love their early surf music, but when you get to their album "Pet Sounds", it's on a totally different level. The album influenced the making of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album. I’ve seen them three times over many decades and they are a great live show. The great thing is that the crowd will include people with small kids to people in their 80s and every age group in between. Timeless music that just freakin’ sounds good. Try California Girls, the very introspective In My Room and my favorite I Can Hear Music with Carl Wilson on vocals. PS: Cork panels 4’ X 4’ covering two opposing walls will greatly reduce the echo and it looks good too.
The 3 Wilson brothers..have that DNA that creates that distinct vocal harmony sound..such as like Bee Gees (brothers) have plus add in Mike Love and Al Jardine..you have that 'one voice' sound
They’re a great band. I saw them many times in concert. When I was a teenager, my friend and I told her boyfriend we were going cruising. He said girls can’t go cruising. I used this song as proof because it says that she goes cruising.😂

@Barry Anderson I've heard them a few times on another channel and they are insanely good. Clearly, great musicians. Do you know if they've written any of their own music?
Back in the day, the main difference between live and recorded was not the quality of the music, but was the length. The radio required pretty short songs (usually under three minutes) and so at concerts you'd really see who the band was.
Absolutely love The Beach Boys, you just cant go wrong with any choice of song. ❤ If you havent done "Darlin" yet, please make that your next one by them. ❤
Thanks for getting back to The Beach Boys! Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the original Beach Boys were three brothers (Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson), a cousin (Mike Love) and a friend (Al Jardine). That is why the vocals have such a unique blend (like the brotherly harmonies of The Bee Gees), in addition to the brilliant harmony structures imagined by Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys were a heavy influence in the vocal structuring of early Huey Lewis & The News songs. HLN actually imitated a photograph from The Beach Boys Surfer Girl album, where they were all holding a surfboard. I think it was pictured on their first album, released in 1980. If you ever want to hear the true depth of The Beach Boys vocals, listen to the last half of the “Today” album and “Pet Sounds”. If you can find isolated vocal tracks, it will blow you away.
This was the very first Beach Boys song I memorized as a kid in the 90s. I love the story the song tells about this rebellious girl - and now that I work in a library I laugh when it talks about ditching the library "like she told her old man" LOL!
The guitars in this song are a straight up match to the sound 'that launched a thousand bands' of 'The Ventures' that started in the 50's and were still touring in the 2000's! Check out 'Walk Don't Run 64' or 'Wipeout' by The Ventures'. 😏
Lyrics: Well she got her daddy's car And she cruised through the hamburger stand now Seems she forgot all about the library Like she told her old man now And with the radio blasting Goes cruising just as fast as she can now Chorus: And she'll have fun fun fun 'Til her daddy takes the T-bird away (Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-bird away) Well the girls can't stand her 'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now (You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace) She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race now (You look like an ace now, you look like an ace) A lotta guys try to catch her But she leads them on a wild goose chase now (You drive like an ace now, you drive like an ace) Well you knew all along That your dad was gettin' wise to you now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied) And since he took your set of keys You've been thinking that your fun is all through now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied) But you can come along with me 'Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now (You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away (Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away) etc etc
The Beach Boys are classic. They have been the soundtrack of my life as a kid in the 60s all through my teen years and early adulthood. And yes, I am a Southern California surfer girl/beach babe from day one.
DARN TOOTIN'. If I hear a Beach Boys tune January its summer. And I am Canadian...its minus 40 F out with 2 feet of snow expected...and I am at the beach!!!
My fist concrert Ever, was The Beach Boys my Freshman year of High School!! Couldn't think of a better First concert!! It was the talk of school on Monday. This would've been around late 1975, I think....... Maybe early 1976. Either way Fantastic concert. So much fun. Everyone sang along and we were on our feet danciing! Thanks for the memories, i was 14 all over again!! 🎉🎉🎉🎶🎶🎶😊💜
The Beach Boys' first big hit was Surfin' USA, which was released in the spring of 1963, and hit #3 on the Billboard chart. My late uncle graduated from high school in Bakersfield, CA (about 100 miles north of Los Angeles) at the end of that spring in 1963, and The Beach Boys were the band that played at his Senior Prom! 😲 Nowadays, it would be amazing enough to have a live band at the prom instead of a D.J. Imagine having a live band with a current top 5 hit on the charts, and who will go on to be one of the most popular bands of all time!
If you like the Beach Boys, you should listen to them singing backup (yes, I said they're singing backup) to Lorrie Morgan on their own song, Don't Worry Baby. She has a phenomenal voice, made all the more special by their beautiful backup harmonies.
brian wilson wrote most all of the beach boys songs- he was the first artist to use multi track recording even though he was deaf in one ear from childhood
One of their best - my opinion. Great harmonies - as usual. Beginning in 1961 the group epitomized "the California sound" about cars, surfing and romance with some influences blending older pop vocal groups, some R&B and with lyrics focused towards adolescents. One of the few American groups that battled with "the British Invasion" groups . In the mid-60's their sound became more experimental. All told, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide, have had 37 tops 40 hits from mid-60's into 2020, with 4 #1 hits. The songs titled: California Girls" and "Surfin USA" and this song are probably their best known from the 60's. Went through some rough period in 70's and most of the 80's. In 1987 they recorded/released their last #1 hit - "Kokomo". They did some touring with Chicago during the 80's.
I saw the Boys twice in the 80s, about 20 years past their prime, but it was so much fun. What isbgreat is they are so iconic that they are one of the bands where every song is one giant singalong party. Everybody joins every song, and so many people are dancing around. It's a ton of fun.
Yea! More Beach Boys! :) Thx Guys! :) PS- Does sound better :) And everyone would understand if You Guys feel the need to back off on 3X/Day Reaction schedule to get 'caught up' with New Home & Fam! :)
omg, I LOVE the Beach Boys!!!! They have SO MANY Amazing songs!!!!!!!! Their song Good Vibrations is actually studied in Music Theory class for the way it broke molds and barriers and opened up the world of music composing and styling. They are SO BLOODY GOOD! They are really just feel good as well, just very fun and sun/surf vibes!
One of my favourite groups. Really bouncy song this one with their great harmonies. There is a good version of this by Beach Boys with Status Quo. I was lucky enough to see them in 2012 on their 50 year celebration tour when they played for 3 hours overall and were fantastic. So many good songs , it is hard to name a favourite but especially like Breakaway, Sloop John B and I can hear music. Their sound is pretty unique, much of which owing to the genius of Brian Wilson. First UK hit was I think 'I get around' in 1964!
Couple of notes... That opening guitar riff was "borrowed" from one of Chuck Berry's songs, and the BBs got busted for it. Berry didn't fuss over it, so the BB got away with that one. One of the reasons why they sounded so much like the record on this video is that they were actually singing to the studio soundtrack which was done by the Wrecking Crew.... a group of superb studio musicians that has been mentioned quite often in your comments. Brian Wilson, the founder of the BB was considered a certified music genius by his peers in the industry. He built those songs note by note in his head, and was able to pull it all together in the studio. Those harmonies are specifically because Wilson was paying homage to the men's singing groups of the previous decade like the Four Freshmen.
They used this opening riff from Chuck Berry. Got into some trouble at first with Surfing USA because label didn’t give him writing credit at first. Those are the only songs using Berry riffs. The Beach Boys recorded this on their own. Perhaps a saxophone from Wrecking Crew. They performed this song all the time - only difference was they didn’t use keyboards in their early days. On the recording Brian Wilson did keyboards and I think Al Jardine played bass. The video was from a performance from March 1964 (can be seen online as “The Lost Concert”).
Yeah, if I remember correctly, on later pressings of "Surfin' USA" they gave sole writing credit to Chuck Berry because it was so close to "Sweet Little Sixteen."
I had always sort of dismissed The Beach Boys, except for Good Vibrations and Sloop John B, until I saw them live in about 1972. I still wasn't totally on board during the concert but everyone seemed to be having a good time listening to their old surf hits...and then they broke into Fun, Fun, Fun. The opening guitar hook instantly captivated the audience and by the end of the first verse, virtually the whole crowd was vibrating as one. It was an epiphany of sorts and I have become much more appreciative in the years since.
I have that same shirt J. DD is my favorite band. The good times of the Beach Boys is undeniable early in their career. They set a tone for surfing and beach vibes. How could you not love this stuff?
Some of the best harmonies ever recorded.. I saw them live at the Ventura Co. Fairgrounds, right on the beach, one of the best concerts I ever went to, and they sounded just like their recordings. The harmonies are very natural for them.
The drummer was friends with the manson family and he told mike love that when he was with them he saw them kill a black man and it broke him inside and in 1983 he got drunk fell off a pier and died. Brian wilson battled drug addiction and was thrown out of the band in 1983 but is better now. And the other wilson brother died in the mid 90's of heart failure. Brian wilson and mike love wrote most of their music.
There is so much to the Beach Boys, from palling around with Charles Manson to inspiring the Beatles to write the Sergeant Pepper album. If you want a real treat, check out the movie Love and Mercy on your movie channel about the struggles and conquest of the genius behind the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson.
Thats Brian Wilson hitting the high pitched ''oooos'' at the end. he has one of the most beautiful falsettos. please check out Surfer girl if you loved Brians voice
The brilliance of the Beach Boys' harmonies and harmonic melodies will live on for decades beyond their last live show... like the Beatles, they took rock & roll and popular music in new directions that still resonate.
Jan and Dean pioneered the California sound which became popular with the Beach Boys who developed the genre further. If you listen to them you could well think you were listening to early Beach Boys

i am a transplant to LA from Ohio. Came to Cali back in 1972. I recall when i crossed the Nevada border into California, this was the first song i heard on the radio. When i arrived in to the LA City limits , California Girls played on the radio, when I got to Santa Monica, Surfing USA played. @Barry Anderson I've heard them a few times on another channel and they are insanely good. Clearly, great musicians. Do you know if they've written any of their own music?
@@DanalynTuthill-yl4hd If you search, you can find a few (not many) of their own compositions. If I can find them, I'll post back.
Thanks for the trip to the past. Cruising the main drag, being cool, listening to some surfer music. Thanks for a Marvelous Monday!!
This is one of their all time best songs! Absolute classic!
One of my favorite songs by the Beach Boys!!
I love the story the song tells about this rebellious girl - and now that I work in a library I laugh when it talks about ditching the library "like she told her old man" LOL!
impossible to be in a bad mood listening to those Beach Boys!!!
This takes me back to when I was a kid/preteen! Such a wonderful time for music. When I’m at the beach, I still love to have Beach Boys music with me!
This song is like the poster child for 60's surfin' Americana. Beyond iconic, practically culture.
The guitars in this song are a straight up match to the sound 'that launched a thousand bands' of 'The Ventures' that started in the 50's and were still touring in the 2000's! Check out 'Walk Don't Run 64' or 'Wipeout' by The Ventures'. 😏
For the Beach Boys harmony at it's best, check out Don't Worry Baby. A master class in vocal harmony
One of their best songs...such beautiful harmonizing.
Lyrics:
Well she got her daddy's car
And she cruised through the hamburger stand now
Seems she forgot all about the library
Like she told her old man now
And with the radio blasting
Goes cruising just as fast as she can now
Chorus: And she'll have fun fun fun
'Til her daddy takes the T-bird away
(Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-bird away)
Well the girls can't stand her
'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace now
(You walk like an ace now, you walk like an ace)
She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race now
(You look like an ace now, you look like an ace)
A lotta guys try to catch her
But she leads them on a wild goose chase now
(You drive like an ace now, you drive like an ace)
Well you knew all along
That your dad was gettin' wise to you now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
And since he took your set of keys
You've been thinking that your fun is all through now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied)
But you can come along with me
'Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now
(You shouldn't have lied now, you shouldn't have lied
And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the T-bird away)
etc etc
The Beach Boys are classic. They have been the soundtrack of my life as a kid in the 60s all through my teen years and early adulthood. And yes, I am a Southern California surfer girl/beach babe from day one.
Real talent, Real singers. They're one of the beat ever.
I was a teen when that song came out.A summer song.Them were the days.
Brian Wilson was the music genius mastermind behind all of the new sounds that The Beach Boys brought to the industry.
Nowadays, it would be amazing enough to have a live band at the prom instead of a D.J.
If you want to hear some songs that really showcase the Beach Boys harmony, try 'In my room', 'Kiss me baby', or 'Til I die'. Incredible
Echo or no echo, you guys are always great!!!
Sail On Sailor will give you a new perspective on Beach Boys harmony
Such a legendary band from my Parents' generation. Always great to hear more "beach" hits. Nice shirt Jordan!
Great song
Brian did everything...he wrote the songs, lyrics, and all harmonies. He also sang, had perfect pitch, and played all guitars and pianos.❤
Haven't heard this in DECADES!
One of my favourite groups. Really bouncy song this one with their great harmonies. There is a good version of this by Beach Boys with Status Quo. I was lucky enough to see them in 2012 on their 50 year celebration tour when they played for 3 hours overall and were fantastic. So many good songs , it is hard to name a favourite but especially like Breakaway,
Sloop John B and I can hear music.
They very definitely stole a lot from Chuck Berry, especially in this songs opening guitar riffs. From "Johnny Be Good" I believe.
Yeah, I think what we have in this video is concert footage overdubbed with the studio recording itself.
If you like the Beach Boys give a listen to Jan & Dean - Dead Man's Curve, Surf City, Little Old Lady From Pasadena
or 'Surf City'
@@markzellmer3223 Yes that one too
I have that same shirt J. DD is my favorite band.
The good times of the Beach Boys is undeniable early in their career. They set a tone for surfing and beach vibes. How could you not love this stuff?
Great song! You should react to God only knows, Wouldn’t it be nice, In my room.
Brian Wilson opened for Chicago last year on his 80th birthday in KC. He still is amazing!
For a similar sound from the time check out the duo Jan and Dean. Their song "It's the Little Old Lady from Pasadena" is another fun car/driving song.
Love the reaction to Brians falsetto at the end. Yes the great genius Brian Wilson
In this video, Mike Love was lead singer and Brian Wilson hit the high notes. They wrote the song.
my first live concert ever - the beach boys in springfield mass. in 1965. 12 years old and my mom took me. they had the same outfits as in this video so i imagine this is around the same time. that was a lifetime ago but seems like yesterday. miss you mom
"Whoever's hitting that note" - Brian Wilson, the genius behind the group.
This was a great summer song released in 1966 by "The Lovin' Spoonful" called- "Summer in the City" was a super popular tune always played by bands at beach dances. I still remember the burning sand....
Love this... I saw the Beach Boys in my first concert at 15 years old in Tampa Stadium... It was amazing! Now my daughter listens to them and I still enjoy them just as much! They are timeless!
Congrats on your new place! 😃
Jan & Dean are very similar to the Beach Boys. Their best is Little Old lady From Pasadena. Lots of fun with that one.
I grew up in the 60s as a child and I still remember hearing this type of music on radio. I love it!!!
Katrina and the Waves "Walking on Sunshine"!
i am a transplant to LA from Ohio. Came to Cali back in 1972. I recall when i crossed the Nevada border into California, this was the first song i heard on the radio. When i arrived in to the LA City limits , California Girls played on the radio, when I got to Santa Monica, Surfing USA played. Point to all this--- I knew that by hearing the Beach Boys music i knew i was in California!!! Such an awesome feeling back then.
