58:40 I had my own personal moment of saying this to the show. The Next to Normal soundtrack saved my life by helping me get through the last year of high school, but immediately after that, I decided I just could not listen to it anymore because of all the bad feelings it brought up. I only just recently listened to it again for the first time in years (So some great coincidental timing with your video!) and I really enjoyed it, and I felt like I was better able to pick out the parts that aren't so good and recognize what's wrong with them. And this video added some more really interesting context that I didn't know about, so thank you! And your ideas for a re-staging sound really good, even if they'd kinda make it into an entirely new show XD

I don't know if it is just me, but I don't find that you talk incredibly quickly. I have often been told that I talk really quickly (I think I might have ADHD so I don't know if that has anything to do with it), so I actually increased the speed of the video.

This was a fantastic analysis. I’ve been trying to think of ways to draw in my (mainly college) psych students to the concept of Madness and different ontologies of mental illness / integrating the social and biomedical models of disability and I might just have to assign them to watch a clip of the show and then this analysis. Regardless of how this benefits me lol thank you so much for this cogent and insightful presentation.

Something that popped up when you were talking about addressing the mistreatment of Diana by Dan, is drawing parallels in the staging between Dan and Gabe. Diana might project her frustrations with Dan's control over her on Gabe, in order to protect herself from dealing with the reality that she's being abused

3:10 I have to slow your videos to .75 speed and then the next creators video I’ll wonder if they’re drunk until I remember to change back the speed setting haha

"I talk fast" oh no, no, no, don't worry about that I'll still have the video sped up.

Ok you talk at a preferable rate of speed. 1.5x for you instead of the normal 2x I watch videos at. That's a compliment.

Fantastic analysis. I recently saw a production of “Next to Normal” after watching this video and found myself agreeing with much of what is said here. Dan actually felt like the protagonist to me, but his actions are so selfish that it was hard to sympathize with him. The lack of character depth only aggravated his unlikability. Diana especially felt like a narrative prosthesis (she studied architecture, too, but there’s nothing about that in the show). The psychological elements of the show also felt very, “And Now We Educate!” and forced.
The music is incredible, but the show already feels dated to me. Radical take, but I wonder if this show was reset to the 1990s or early 2000s, would the dated medical talk feel more natural? It wouldn’t solve the narrative issues with the show, but having it clearly take place in the past might add a comfortable distance that makes it easier to swallow.
