I used to live in the flat above the shop that is now a mobility aids supplier. It used to be Dunn's pet shop. Brassingtons was a fruit & veg shop later became a pub/club. We had to vacate our flat one night when there was an electrical fire in the upper floor of Shaws fish shop next door. People were throwing stones at the lounge window when they noticed smoke pouring out of the roof next door.. The smell in our flat was awful for a few days and we had to go and stay with a friend in May Bank. That was Barclays Bank across the road. There was also a shop called 'Stolen from Ivor'. The market now is a very sad remnant of what it was. The market in those days was really really busy and you could buy almost anything. Woolworths was on the top corner - now Poundland. A car once went out of control and went through woolworths window and unfortunately killed a woman who was the mother of a boy i went to school with. The slug and lettuce pub is not the original one it used to be opposite the side of Nat West bank next to Market Lane. So many things have changed over the years

Queens Gardens Newcastle, looks about the same as it did in the 1960's, except that there are fewer people around. Probably. this is because most of us went off to Australia for a better life.

Where I live Barrow if they brought the stores from edge of town to the centre it would be half decent. Small towns need every store in the Town Centre.

The Red Lion Square area near the church isn't derelict. The shops etc have been relocated due to pending redevelopment, as is the Merrial St/Ryecroft part of the town.

As a kid in the 70/80s the place was always heaving and the market stalls were unparalleled, the town centre was filled with stalls and there was also the indoor market too! Quite depressing to see the poor state of the place and yes that bargain store was Barclays Bank Woolworths closed down on the other corner 😢

That large building in the corner in the iron market used to be the town library

Visit Kingston upon Thames near where I live. As it is still thriving. It is an ancient market town as well.

Many thanks for this. Good to see Newcastle again. I lived there in the 60s and 70s and remember it well. There was some wonderful shops which seem to have gone, but that reflects the times and changing tastes. My father had a jewellery shop there and my grandmother a restaurant. Great to see that the town is being looked after, and hopefully the empty shops will be filled in time.

The new building in the Queens Gardens is the new Civic centre , moved from Merrial Street, I think the library may be also in there? It looks cleaner than the rest of the potteries. Thank you for your tour , I worked there for 35 years, times change.Good to see the parks department are looking after the flower beds which are beautiful.

Only just come across this.boomer here that walks disparingly around Newcastle with despair at whats been done.but cannot agree on Castle house apart from the brickwork which is nice the rest is like a glasshouse which spoils it.nice to see some one actualy looking up at the buildings.there are some lovleyGeorgian buildings down the Ironmarket.Newcaste once had a clay pipe factory.andalso had a few hat maker shops.i was born and bred in Newcastle 78 years ago and have seen some changes but unfortunatly some not so good.naming the new multi story car park which will never be filled that looks like a nuclear reactor.ugly building.

just a couple of boomers walking through the wreckage of society, but at the same time benefitting from the artificial property boom that caused the collapse.
