    Today, Music Nomad has sent me a great care kit to help this TERRIBLY kept rare Gibson Union Jack Explorer from the 80s. There is so much fingerboard gunk on this, I haven't wanted to touch it since I bought it a few months ago. Will Music Nomads products be able to save it? I think so. We also check out their KISS setup system.

    May I suggest that if you are going to use "steel wool" on the fret board ... YOU DON'T!. Even taping over the pickups doesn't prevent some steel particles from the steel wool from getting to them. Instead use bronze wool to eliminate any chance of getting steel particles on the pickups. Bronze is not magnetic and will not mess up the pickups. Available at your local big box stores.

      Guess it depends on how you do it. I just cover the pups with a hand towel (sometimes I don't cover them at all)...use the steel wool and make sure I swipe my cleaning brush away from the body, towards the head when I clean up and I've never hand any problems with the wool particles getting on my pickups. 🤔🤔🤔

    Music nomad is the best - as a luthier I use their F-one and frine stuff all the time, as well as their guitar body polish. Lasts longer than anything else. I also use the string winding _attachment_ for a little hand drill, no need to buy a dedicated one if you have the magnetic hex chuck, and it's also great if you need to screw anything in or out. The LIon ones are great these days. If you learn how to use the clutch on your drill, it's slightly looser than a gentle tighten by hand so you'll be able to quickly but safely screw and unscrew anything. Genuinely, that one 8 buck or whatever it is product has saved me hours of my life because I can get a string up to pitch in seconds now.

  • @COBHC8890
    @COBHC8890 Рік тому +3

    Does anyone else put a few small drops of liquid graphite on the nut and bridge? One of my good family friends (Rick) was a luthier for 42 years. He always told me to put a few drops of liquid graphite on the nut (string grooves) and a few drops in the grooves on the bridge. (literally a drop on a Q tip, and dab it in) I started doing it prob 10 years ago, and it makes my guitar feel/play like butter. No string issues, they last longer, easier to bend, and believe it or not! Stays in tune better!

    • @hkguitar1984
      @hkguitar1984 Рік тому +2

      Some guitars will benefit from that while others won't. Aggressive playing/bending (tremolo use) will cause the strings to move back and forth within the Nut slots, in those instances yes, a little lube is helpful. On something like an acoustic guitar that rarely sees heavy string bending, lube in the Nut slots can sometimes affect/mute open chords/notes being played.

  • @alanlevin167

    Good job. However, I must note that most ofthe clean-up material is available easily in your community. May cost a bit if you areonly doing one guitar once but if you have a bunch and restring and polish regularily, they become inexpensive: From the auto parts store: Turtle wax white polishing compound polishes frets and will polish out dull finish (be careful, can really eat finish). Meguiars auto body polish will polish all painted, laqurered surfaces (It's the same stuff as an old brand of guitar polish I bought 40 years ago.) After you clean the fretboard, put on some thin linseed oil from the art supply store (not from Home Depot wood finishing isle!) QTips are good for getting in lots of places, a hand vacuum cleaner with a fine wand can get dirt out of many places but some people use 'canned air' from the computer repair shop. Te one thing I do need is 'deoxit spray' to clean and lube volume and tone controls.

    • @drjsmajor
      @drjsmajor Рік тому

      Deoxit spray is key for electric guitar maintenance. More so for amps. No idea how many guitars and amps have been closeted when all they needed was a little Deoxit but it is a BUNCH of them. I have personally bought a few for pennies on the dollar and broght them instantly back to life. You cannot "over-do" it as far as harming the electronicsbut you do want to attempt to keep it off the finish. For amps I frequently just open up the back and douse it. For guitars I try to use the smallest amount that is humanly possible in the pots. Also great for corroded battery compartments on any electronics and even computers that stop working before you toss them in the trash. I almost never toss a non working electronic without painting the whole board with Deoxit. Most recently I used it on a non working TV remote. Just opened the back and doused it. Remote started instantly working again (changed the color of the plastic where it dripped)

    • @drjsmajor
      @drjsmajor Рік тому

      I prefer Deoxit but WD-40 works well for pots also. It was SO overused for everything in the 70's and 80's that it kind of got a bad rap. Does have its place in the world and pots can be one of those places.

      I bought a dog nail trimmer Dremmel on Amazon for like $10. It is a full fleddged Dremel (cordless) but goes at very low speeds. My dog HATED it more than just trimming his nails so I repuropsed it as a guitar dremmel. Lower speeds make it easy to "not get away" from me and now my frets are like mirrors. Clean the fretboard with cleaner and steel wool, then tape them off and apply metal polish, then use the buffing wheel on the "dog Dremmel". Works spectacularly! I use Blue Magic metal polish. Costs like $6 at Wal Mart. I would suspect it is roughly a 5 lifetimes supply. Many swear by Semichrome but that is far more expensive.

    Hey Austin. I'm not a luthier by any any means, but I would advise you to get a bit of of course to learn how to level, crown and polish your frets.Just polishing them doesn't do anything. You need to check if there are low or high frets. I love your content, you know your gear adn guitars, but get a bit of training on how to give a guitar the TLC she needs. A guitar like this definitely needs a level and recrown before the polish. Having this skill will even improve your content!

    • @Trog
      @Trog  Рік тому +2

      Level/crown is on a whole different level from cleaning. You really can't mess anything up cleaning a guitar - a lot can go wrong when doing frets if you don't have experience. It is best to leave that kind of work to professionals on expensive 8k+ guitars like this Union Jack

    My mother used to work in the Walmart Jewelry department and handled watches not to mention jewelry plus trinkets. There was a guy who would go in there in less than 3 months of getting a watch wanting to have it replaced for corrosion. It went back and forth until she brought it to the attention to the store manager. Apparently the guys body was quite acidic and would cause any watch or jewelry he wore to corrode worse than that explorer .Just saw a new guitar on the Gibson site sales add that was painted the same way the studio greenburst I bought after you featured it off the reverb site. Only thing the one on the add is obviously a standard with binding. But it has more or less a perimeter burst except just past the neck pickup on the cutaway and the area around the toggle is black .

      I also have to regularly replace the pickguard and pickup ring screws that sit under where my picking hand rests.
      Those screws have to be replaced every 2 to 3 years on the instruments I regularly play.
      I've tried stainless screws and even those get so corroded that they become impossible to back-out/remove.

      They call that “piss hands”. Not that you pissed on your hands, but rather your hand sweat is more acidic than others. Fun fact, you sweat 2 different types of sweat, one when your hot, and one when your nervous or more emotional. The emotional sweat contains more pheromones which is more acidic and causes piss hands.

    I wish more Reverb sellers would pay attention to a video like this, they seem to think that can throw a dirty guitar online and ask a premium price without doing any prep and clean work before taking pictures. They could also take a little time and get the correct information for their listings. I see so many Gibson's that are labeled the wrong color and there are so many sub models that many sellers just refuse to do any research and that's why their listings are on the resale platforms for over a year.

    ATTN GUITAR GUY WHO MAKES THESE VIDEOS. How does one get hold of you? Nut shell. I have a person who will be spending the rest of his life a guest of a Midwestern state. He was a guitar player and collector and he wants some sold. Most are just standard guitars but he has a beautiful Gibson Les Paul, not verified but he said a 1950 Telecaster. A 58ish Fender Stratocaster, a couple more quality guitars... Around 30 others from mid 70s Taylor, some custom Spanish made one. If they have not been destroyed, a sad chance considering who accessed the guitars, I will be selling on his behalf.
    I don't want to mess around with people but I know you, unlike me, know what is what and I trust you. The reason there is a problem is they are in a temp controlled storage and my aunt is 80 and in a home so her son is the loan and he is kinda out there. This is interested in first shot, even if consignment, cuz the owner ain't going to show up again, I want to be able to get hold of you.

    I get that this is trying to simplify the process but you’re not supposed to capo the first fret while adjusting string action.
    Also, different guitars call for different specs. A Les Paul gets the action measured at the 12th fret where a fender (25.5” scale) gets measured at the 17th fret.
    These guitars were built on the standard system and therefore you have to measure in 64ths of an inch. ( I don’t like it either). Les Paul is 5/64” bass side, 3/64” treble. Fender set the height of each saddle to 4/64” to match the radius of the fretboard (if you set each saddle you’ll see the natural curve of the neck reflected on the saddles)

    Trogly Hays here to tell you about oxy clean! j/k However on a more serious note. Shouldn't you have more support at that neck/body joint when doing these sort of things? All the pressure on mostly the neck is probably not a good thing? But if it were distributed to more of a sturdy area would cause less neck stress and maybe avoid the neck joint lines(finish/body cracks) Just a thought. I have no faith in those neck cradles alone. Add an arched back pillow and its the perfect set up for cleaning and set ups
