This was extremely well thought out! I always complicate my searches and then dumb it down until I find something interesting. People don’t always know what they’re selling so if “voodoo” doesn’t work in the search “Gibson guitar” just might. My ‘68 SG was listed as “guitar electric gibson” and just searching SG would have gotten me nowhere! Phenomenal info Trog!
I had "luck" with a misspelling of the model. A few years back, I bought a genuine Gibson Les Paul Standard in root beer finish. I won it at a pretty good price as the model was misspelled on the eBay auction as Les Paul Standart (Standard was not on the truss rod cover). Since then, I always try a common misspelling or a fat fingering of the model name in searches too, especially when using the app versus the website. Autocorrect memes are memes for a reason!
Great video that covered some things I had not thought of. Never underestimate the value of networking with people who share the same interests. When I was heavily into collecting old school BMX I knew a few guys who were the kings of going to thrift stores, garage sales etc to buy bikes and flip them. I could never cover the ground they covered so I would simply put a word out to these guys that I was looking for something specific and to think of me if they come across something similar. I scored several of my dream bikes or parts from these guys. And because they were more interested in turning it around for a small profit quickly I was still able to pick it up under market value. And because of those relationships, every time they came across something they didn't know about or care about I was one of their first people they contacted. If I didn't collect it for myself, it made great trade bait. They made money, I made money or ended up with parts or bikes I wanted. It all worked out. That may be different in the world of guitars though.
I appreciate the fact you have taken the time to share this information with your viewer's. I have been trying for a few year's to find another Fender Stratocaster like my 1999 plum purple metallic one. It's my absolute favorite and i play it to death so i want another one it's equal so i can rest it. Fender only made this finish for three year's. If anyone out there has one in almost mint to new condition they want to sell please message me. Thanks!
Sometimes you have to change your goal... I was hunting an Ibanez that's been out of stock and now confirmed to be discontinued. I wanted the axe for 24 frets and a wang bar... Brendon Small Explorer to the rescue!!! It's way bigger than the Ibanez but in the game of hunting, this flip flop has me very excited for it's arrival!
Greetings, Austin! Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your secrets! One thing you did not talk about (probably because it has nothing to do with the hunt) is the price. Once you find that elusive guitar, there's the issue of the asking price. I know there are "blue book" subscriptions out there, as well as Reverb's pricing guide, but I would be very interested to hear what your approach is to determining fair value and any negotiating tactics you employ. Thanks again for all the great videos! Cheers, and keep burninating!
A lot of those are methods I already use. I even managed to track down the old owner of one of the guitars I bought through Reverb. He made a post about wondering what happened to it and if it might be for sale. I let him know it's got a good home and my band mate wouldn't sell/trade it for absolutely anything. He was kinda bummed out that it's not for sell, but understood that it's being loved.
No doubt the internet and sites like Reverb and eBay have made it easier to look for things country-wide or World-wide, but it does mean that the relative value and rarity of things is easier to check and is more widely known by more buyers and sellers. I do miss some of the guitar hunting places that I used to use: free-ad/recycler and local newspaper classified ads, student notice boards, ads in rehearsal rooms etc. When visiting a different city for work I would often check out local music and second hand stores and free ad magazines. Sometimes I noticed price differentials from place-to-place, or I would see a quirky brand or model of guitar for sale. I think that the opportunities for these types of 'finds' has now diminished.
And musicgoround and guitar center. For the former, there's less online traffic compared to Guitar Center so cool and rare stuff sits. The only issue is that unlike GC they don't always ship.
Chad move: make a replica of that guitar. Buy a custom body and neck from Precision Guitar Kits and send it to a luthier to turn it into what you want :)
I wrote a python script to scan my local supermarket website for a list of specific items and check if they were on offer and if so, email me. I set it to run every morning at 9am because typically offers last several days but you could increase the frequency to like hourly etc. It's can be quicker than website email alerts because sometimes they update quite slowly etc. It alerted me when one whiskey was 30 instead of 50, and when another was 50 instead of 63. I get alerts for the 50e bottle every couple of months. Its more common and I know I don't need to rush and buy it. The 63e bottle was on offer once in almost a year, but was also on offer for 55. So maybe 55 is enough if I need a bottle cos no point waiting a year. It's quite useful. You get to learn the patterns as trogly has pretty much, knowing price ranges for models etc.
Love this video!!! I employ many of your tactics. Looking for the birthday guitar, so your final segment really hit home! I got a Heritage 80 Standard within 40 days but looking for "the one." If anyone has an 80s Gibson either the first five of 82432 hit me up. Bonus points if it's an ES-369😉
Wow, just tried your “search Craig’s List” suggestion and found a bass I’ve been after for quite some time, and ten minutes from home. A bit more than I was hoping to pay, but I might reach out to see if he’d take less. Thanks for the videos!
I wish I had found this a few weeks ago when I was searching. I was lucky and found exactly what I was after on eBay after a few days of checking. Got myself a mid to late 80s Japanese Fender Strat with a Kahler floating trem. Certainly not a museum piece with some dings and worn finish but exactly what I was after.
I found a Voodoo Explorer... it's right next to my Voodoo Les Paul and my Voodoo SG. The explorer still has the plastic on the pickups. I was expecting pictures of it to show up in this video.
As far as les Paul's you're talking a burst les Paul from 58-60. Not sure if there's 61 models. Think 62 production was switched to the sg. If there was a 62 dated burst it'd be worth 100s of thousands anyway.
@@irishRocker1 as far as our expert and other sources say there was no 62 as what we know in the normal Les Paul shape. I've yet to see anything other than the SG style body offered even as a reissue. That was my point. I know there was a few years that Gibson didn't make the Les Paul in the shape we're accustomed to. So in order to get a guitar made in my birth year at least I may have to choose either another model . Being I was born on a traditional holiday new years day there's no way I'll get one made on that particular day.
Cross reference the same instrument on CL and Reverb, or FB, and then use the info to swoop in without using the portal. You can get your birthday, but not birth year. Or you can get your birth year and not your birth day. I was born on 12/30, and haven't seen any guitars built on that day. I'm also many years old, so I predate the system.
Just a tip for all the younger players out there, if you think you will ever want a birth year guitar you should buy it now while you can afford it. Back in high school I ran across a 1962 Stratocaster that I could have purchased for $500, I should have purchased it then. To buy one now is out of the question for me, just too costly. My point being, always keep an eye out, you might run across one before it becomes vintage.
@HK Guitar Fully agree with your comments, I bough at 64 Jaguar in custom Color Olympic White with matching headstock. I think I paid $5,500 for it with tax , delivered. Picking a limited edition doesn’t hurt. If you have a child that was born in 2017, Fender had a Rare Wood Series-they came in a huge assortment of wood (including a reclaimed pine (from the roof of ap plantI in Wisconsin, Reclaimed Mahogany etc) Fender only made around 300 of of these guitars. So while Fender has made thousands of Teles/Squiers/Jags, Jazzmasters/Strats over the years, their are some benefits--but unfortunate3ly I wont be around in another 50 years….but it would make a great gift for your child or grand kid!:)
The birth year guitar I want is a 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom, but considering what they are going for these days I’m probably better off buying a Custom Shop reissue for the same price or less.
