  • How to remove a rivnut (water bottle fitting) and replace it using a 19/64 drill bit and an m5 rivnut. I use a 19/64 drill bit and a Dremel cutting blade to safely remove the old rivnut. Some ruvnuts may offer more difficulty than others if they are spinning in the frame. Here is a list list of the tools and parts I used.

    Thank you. This video was so incredibly helpful - well thought out, well recorded, excellent coverage of the process and the pitfalls. I'm in the process of refurbishing a 20 year old Seven Axiom, which arrived with barrel adjusters and bottle mounts frozen or spinning. The frozen bolts were easy...a little penetrating oil and 30 minutes in the sun loosened them right up. I had to cut off the water bottle mounting bolts on the seat tube and am hoping that the rivnut tool will have enough clearance on the lower hole on the seat tube after I dremel out the existing rivnuts.

    I think here in my country it's cheaper to replace the entire frame instead of buying all the essential tools, but it might be worth it if you're going to replace the rivbolts of multiple bikes. And the nearest bare bones bike shop near me is around 90km and I'm pretty sure that they don't have the tools to replace it, I think I'm going to just deal with it because the top bolt is still useable, just wanted to say thanks for the info

      Thank you. You can use metal band straps to hole the water cage. We call them hose clamps, for vehicles.

    Are rubber rivnuts better to stop galvanic corrosion between 2 different metals?

    Can you help me-
    My bolt got stuck into rivnut probably corrosion, I can't unscrew it, rivnut spins together, I tried with clencher to pull it out of frame, didn't happened, .. any suggestions?
    Thanks.

      You need to stop the base rivet from spinning, Use a tool like a split fork pry tool to lift up on the cage bolt while unscrewing it. This upward pressure should stop the rivet from spinning.

    Nice video. Be aware that rivet nut assortment you are showing has many nuts that require a larger tool to install them than the tool shown.

    Where can I find the flexible grinding tool attachment that you used on your Dremel?
    I’ve tried to search for one with no success.
    Thanks!

      It’s called Dremel ez lock mandrel… it came with my dremel so I have some familiarity…. Not a big fan because that spring action is what locks the cutting wheel on, and that flex is loosening the mandrel on the blade and can possibly allow the blade to slip. I saw a video where that actually happened to someone where the blade ejected at high speed… I use washers to keep the spring from moving, I’d recommend sticking to a regular mandrel If u have one?

    What type of rivenut do you recommend for a high dollar aluminum Mtn bike frame. Rivnut material choices are: Aluminum, Zinc coated carbon steel or stainless steel?? Rivnuts will hold heavy Ebike battery on dual suspended mtn bike. Thanks

      I would try cutting a slot into the bolt with a Dremel and a cutoff wheel, then unscrewing it with a flat head screwdriver. If you damage the rivnut, then you can replace it!

    how does that tool attach riv nut? what physical happens? thanks

    • @curtisyeschke8912
      @curtisyeschke8912 2 роки тому +1

      The tool causes the rivnut to collapse towards the hole. There is a section that has lines on it. When the rivnut collapsed, those lines grip the side opposite of the lip, which is why the rivnut doesn’t spin.

    Why do we put grease on the bolt? Why not thread locker? I always thought we need the bolt to be tight and not unscrew itself from the vibration while riding.

    • @appelflapdrol
      @appelflapdrol 2 роки тому +1

      With greased threads you can tighten te bolt further because of lesser friction, while making sure it will still loosen if and when you want it to. A properly torqued bolt won't come loose all of a sudden

    Or just thread a bolt in and hit the bolt head with a hammer. Even if its already stripped who cares, its being replaced anyway.

  • @neilthompson4819

    Overkill on this. I drill out the thread in the existing 5mm rivnut, and simply retap a new thread with a 6mm tap, then just use 6mm bolt instead of the original 5mm.
