irst heard this song in 1978. Couldn't believe my ears how fantastic this mysterious , hauntingly beautiful piano. God rest your souls Lyle ; truly a musical genius ; one of the true creative masters .
Yeah!…they most certainly are and were the epitome of 20th century jazz fusion…a living jazz, not just modern jazz…and certainly not ‘elevator music’… but rather, jazz that retains both a classic form, (in its’ improvisational style, thus avoiding a tendency toward monotonously unenlightened, genre-trapped, repetitive, improv guitar/piano ‘licks’) and its’ traditional blues bound chordal structures and progressions, while adopting/ incorporating non-jazz ‘like’ counter rhythms and extended compositional forms, drawn from other cultures, resulting in a more complex, and satisfying listening experience! This… the genius of, such unparalleled, innovative compositional beauty,is provided by, Lyle Mays. A combination of Classical structures, with highly sophisticated chord and tonal progression! Thank you Lyle for contributing to the texture of music on this planet…Your vision is inspiring, I listen, and try to incorporate such tonal and rhythmic awareness! Thank you for seeing more than the rest of us!
Well now, you have more access to beautiful music for the price of a cell phone; the key is discernment, which there may have been slightly more of in the good old days. Who knows?
We saw this exact lineup in October 1978 at The Punch and Judy Theatre in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.... there are no words to describe the amazing show, I walked out refreshed, speechless, and have been a fan ever since.
I have been a fan of Pat and Lyle and the PMG since I first heard San Lorenzo gently echoing all over a loft apartment I had in 1980. This music has become the soundtrack of my life. Have seen them many times since then. Best one...Secret Story tour in 1993 in Boston.
My aunt used to play this cassette every time I was in the car with her, when I was a kid. 30 some odd years ago and this became one of my favorite albums.
First heard this tune in Soundwarehouse Dallas Texas in 1978. Went in and this was being played by the clerk. I bought it and I have been a fan and own most of his music
I remember the first time I heard Pat in 1975 when he sat in with Gary Burton's group and you could tell that he was special. I have been a follower ever since.
Thank you for posting. If you knew the Island of Hawaii in 1979, you probably know beach 69. I was backed up at waters edge in my vw van listening to KGU in Honolulu. This came on. Changed my life!
I saw this tour in the fall of '78 at a college gym in Grand Rapids, MI. The PMG was the opening act for Leo Kottke. This concert still stands as the greatest jazz show I've ever witnessed. After taking all their equipment off the stage and bringing out a stool and a mic stand, Leo proceeding to clear the place out. He was either drunk or maybe that is part of his act but we stayed for 3 songs and left. An incredible act to follow. Felt sorry for him. Quite the booking disaster . Have been a Pat fan ever since.
Whoa! I was at that show in the gym in GR. Drove over from Muskegon. I was just now searching for a recording of the group from that era. I didn't want that opening act to end.
I completely agree. PMG usualy performs better on shows, musics become better everytime they play live! This is exactly different comparing with another groups!!!!
Despite the lack of stereo sound, there is something genuine in how it sounds here. The music of the 1970s, in general, was the best, when the art was not done purely for money and status. The whole scene and setup in the video is magical. The song is a work of art.
Thanks for posting this. It's been awhile since I first saw this. I don't think any music like this ever existed before Pat and Lyle and Dan came out with this sort of elegant revolving type of songs. I don't know any other way of describing it.
Since i discoverd this music i can't stop listen. A great music and Band. I am from Brazil. Desde que descobri esta música eu nunca mais parei de ouvir. Que música e banda boas. Eu falo do Brasil.
Saw the PMG twice in the 80's at the Greek and he opened both concerts with Phase Dance and WOW! Anticipation for the start of the concert then they take your breath away at the beginning of this song then goose bumps at the end! I always come back to Phase Dance!
i was about 16 at the release of this album ,...my brother brought it home and i wore it out on both sides...still number one in my collection ..a special thanks to Danny g for the drumming influence...,
I remember seeing this 'original' PMG at the Rusty Nail in Sunderland MA in 1977. Maybe 50 people in attendance, but we all knew afterwards that Pat was the very, very, real deal.
This his best band .yes the very 1st .pa turned me onto this played on his wurlitzer .me zep elp.etc .but many other r great.b 65 soon pa gone since 1996.still hav orig vinly
God they're so young... ;-) Great performance, thanks for posting this!!!! I'd be REALLY thankful to know the year and what TV show (if that's what is was) in which country we're watching here !
The only live show of his I went to was in Manchester UK in 1989. It was probably the most enjoyable 'gig' I've ever attended. Not so much for the playing - Pat's 175 tone was too mellow to cut through properly [and Lyle's piano solos were largely inaudible]. That was my honest impression; I rate him as the greatest guitarist however. Blame the mixer man I suppose... The real quality was in the fantastic rhythmic swing and general feel-good aspect they effortlessly created; not to mention Pat's huge charisma - which swept one along beautifully.
Stendhal syndrome, or maybe this was a way of enjoy music, in the seventies and so, a long time gone nowadays in the mainstream public , thanks to the greedy businness assholes with fancy suits

Metheny and Mays...there may never be a more magical combination

1977 -78. No internet. Just beautiful Music.

lucky you!! great and unforgettable experience
I saw them at the Agora ballroom in Atlanta in the fall of 1979.
The Maples Inn in Pointe Claire, Québec. À little Rock bar. I was speechless as well. Bought the album, still have it. Learned all the bass lines!
Got to mix this band at the Exit/In in Nashville. Still have a copy. Unfuckinbelievable.
Yep same thoughts at Michigan State University same month and year. RIP Lyle
Lyle was clearly a driving force for Metheny!!...

Ah yes: The old Gibson ES-175. Always good to see that one.
No place for a single wrong note, everything is perfect 100%
At the time this was described as 'The Berklee Sound', since everybody at Berklee College of Music in Boston was trying to 'cop this feel!
? ISN'T G.I.T sound
My aunt used to play this cassette every time I was in the car with her, when I was a kid. 30 some odd years ago and this became one of my favorite albums.
Its amazing how good music can sink into you so deeply when you are a kid
First heard this tune in Soundwarehouse Dallas Texas in 1978. Went in and this was being played by the clerk. I bought it and I have been a fan and own most of his music
Your aunt has good taste in music.
Omg! So talented at such young ages. I was only 10 in 77 when they were getting started. I didn't discover them until 1989. Wow!
just heard about Lyle Mays ,RIP,,love this group, a real inspiration, awesome stuff!!!
The girl at 5:00 held the breathe during Lyle Mays' whole piano solo, so beautiful was it
I remember the first time I heard Pat in 1975 when he sat in with Gary Burton's group and you could tell that he was special. I have been a follower ever since.
Yes
Haha yes, but of course!
What a band! One of their best songs, with an incredible piano solo by Lyle Mays.
This video is the best ive seen in many many days. Guitarist are many times boring, but this one is magical. Love the bassist, sounds like Jaco style.

that was better than the album recording...and they know it too...look at them groovin!
I completely agree. PMG usualy performs better on shows, musics become better everytime they play live! This is exactly different comparing with another groups!!!!
Let's just take a second to appreciate Mark Egan's bass playing, especially from 6:49 until the end

That's the signature Metheny Stunned Audience. I experienced the same thing in 2005 when I saw the Trio in Dayton, OH.
I too have experienced it...I saw the Kin tour twice in 2014...simply mind blowing.
Thanks for posting this. It's been awhile since I first saw this. I don't think any music like this ever existed before Pat and Lyle and Dan came out with this sort of elegant revolving type of songs. I don't know any other way of describing it.
Do not forget Mark Egan's contribution to the rhythmic section...

Forgotten how I much I loved this band!

Thanks for posting this! I remember seeing this when it was originally broadcast and have been looking for it ever since!
Es mágico encontrar tanto tiempo después estas grabaciones nunca vistas ni oidas de estos temas que marcaron mi adolescencia y mi vida, ¡Gracias!
PabloVestory gracias a vos por tu comentario.
Honestly I can see that Pat’s solo was not as good as his 85-90s or later years. But Lyle was always as good as it can be. Mind blowing.
That is exactly the way I remember seeing the band in '78, in Portland!
Signature song!!...
Danny and Mark too!
I kinda need that shirt now. Really do.
Pat from the beginning with his own sound... RIP Lyle Mays
This guy is unstoppable
1:30 the woman's face and the lick he plays, awesome ! lol :-)
Yes
OMG, I remember, they were so young 😳
Pat sei stato grande anche nel capire in anticipo che con questa ritmica (basso e batteria) il sound del PMG non avrebbe fatto molta strada...
Pure Genius

Lyle is a software manager now. Why doesn’t he continue to tour this magic.
RIP, dear Lyle 2/10/20
astrodad65 very sad. Big loss to the music world and only 66 years old. His music will live on. RIP Lyle
astrodad65 2020 is really horrible!

Does anyone know what year this was recorded? And/or maybe have a link to the full set?
Josh The video is part of a TV Show. Austin City Limits Dec. 1977
You're quick! Thank you : )
:-)
Why does this make me feel sad?
Do not know... It is the opposite to me...Gives me strength...
Phase Dance... Mood Swing?
Stendhal syndrome, or maybe this was a way of enjoy music, in the seventies and so, a long time gone nowadays in the mainstream public , thanks to the greedy businness assholes with fancy suits
@@chipreid755 Astute comment. In music [SadNESS > Depression] (far, far greater-than)
Too bad its not in stereo.
