Great update !
A few simple features that would be so useful in Ableton are :
- Freezing a group
- Hide & make inactive
- Audiosuite (printing an effect into an audio clip)
Goddam - freezing a group, great idea.
I think they just added this but work around send it to a stereo audio channel with resample
- Clip + Smart Containers so you can chop and clue samples non destructively
- Hybrid tracks
- Freeze in Spot
- Isolated Plugins so you daw cant crash and plugion restated
- CLIP FX where you can have an FX just on a clip like an EQ in particular

As a 100% Ableton user for more almost a decade now, I'm very excited for this update, it does add lots or great features wether it's an improvement to an existing utility, interface or a new addition to the DAW, yet I feel that it is still missing alot of important factors that needs a fix or an improvement that would really elevate the experience by a large amount like video compatibility and rendering issues, when flattening a mono track it automatically makes and shows it stereo, not adding more features regarding export filtering like reaper or pro tools, not having stem export features for easier colabs and not having an easier way for making cutdowns regarding tools or shortcuts. That said i still love using ableton but I genuinely think that Ableton should focus more right now on the UI and UX part instead of adding more new instruments and effects or at least work out both.
RE video, there are 4 or 5 great M4L based suites for working with video/visuals which I love. Ebosuite, t3x2r, videosync, zwobot, etc…Do you use any of these? Curious what else you would be looking for? Maybe I can improve my game.
You can export stems pretty easily. Just export master and select all individual channelS.
@@codmiz2220 yeah i know but when i said stem exporting i meant having more flexibility in exporting stems, especially like having the mono tracks mono and stereo tracks stereo and it would be nice to have a more neat labeling system because when you export stems the tracks are bounced with a lot of label name, and it becomes a chore when for example mixing the stems in protools.
@@k4qubi The label naming thing is a chore yes. I’ve seen a couple of producers just use an “_” in the exporting. Your folder game would need to be on point, but doing that would get you clean names like _BASS, _LV, _EG, etc.

Dude, you've been able to do it for two weeks before the first version of BW was released. Used to be a key command; now all you do is select "second window" from View menu. Voila, your done.
I thought it would rock my world but when it was implement 10 years ago I found that I seldom if ever, use it.
V. 12 is slightly more eloquent but it's the same exact feature, just made full size.

as someone who isnt well versed in music theory. suck at chords and learning key this just made it so much better for me!
I really like the look of thesimilar sounds functionality and roar.
But what I'd really like is a built in pitch correction tool like in Logic. Maybe I just have a terrible workflow for it but it would be great to have a mode where you can choose an audio clip, switch into pitch correction mode, it detects pitches and lets you move them around like midi.
I got the 11 update straight away, mostly for take lanes, which are great for a non EDM person like me, so I was hoping the next recording focused tool like this was coming. But maybe these new interface changes are a step towards that *copium*

Left field question...I recently downloaded UAD VST3 plugins. The upgraded plug-ins don't give you a (m) mono option for their plug-ins. Does ableton 12 recognize when you have a mono signal when using a stereo plug-in? Is this something i need to worry about? Does ableton 11 recognize as well? Thats the version im using. Hopefully my question makes sense. Your video are a big help! Thanks

I'm using Ableton 10 and it has some of the features you mentioned! Like minimizing devices or changing the size of the volume meters!

The MIDI additions are quite impressive, Ableton definitely listened to the cry’s for upgrading the MIDI editor.

I’m at the early stages of music production and I have difficulty understanding how the DAW works because sometimes when I arm a track with drum kits, they don’t play but other instruments play when I arm them
Check the octave you are triggering of the midi controller you are using

Anyone know why Ableton live 12 doesn't show the VST folders anymore? Its all VSTS now and no folders...so now I don't know what is what cause everything was organize by folder names!

the search histroy was a big one for me personally too
it has a bug..... with suspend pedal pressed continuosly.......the suspend on my left hand keys stop abrubtly when the right hand plays rapidly a few keys.... this happens when i have 2 or more midi tracks selected..... am usin Arturia keylab 88 mk 2...... Analoglab V and Piano V3 does not have this problem.

Number one thing I am expecting is a Freeze and Flatten one button shortcut. I hate that it is a two process step. I just want it to flatten or render in place right away. Comes in handy with large projects. Also freezing groups woul dbe great.

True. It isn't very clear why they decided to fix it on the right side, knowing that you arrange tracks from left to right, and not viceversa. Way more mouse movements.
Interesting... I would think it would be called an "Upgrade" (to a new version)
rather than an "Update" (for a version that's already installed)...

Seing this makes me realize how far behind Abelton to a DAW like Cubase is. Of course, you can make good music with it, but its crazy to see that.

I’ve been rocking Ableton from 6.0 and it’s my bread and butter 🧈 . Some things I like in Cubase and even logic would be be so much of an improvement in my workflow but they seem to be more into other stuff.😢
Live has to really step up it's game in terms of aux tracks, audio editing, and routing.

Could you please make a Tutorial about Audio Editing in the arrange view. And working with the mixer and Arrange only. Guitar and Vocal guy here. I’ve been burnt out on all DAWs.

Maybe a better limiter but honestly all these midi editing tools are insannnnne, def will help creativity
The similar sound feature is simple but really useful because you can easily make a brand new kit of coherent sounds without the need to previously selecting them and losing a lot of time!

I bought Live11 suite only 12 months ago so it chafes a bit to now need to find serious money for mostly EDM focused improvements. I was also hoping that the interface would get cleaned up as it's now extremely cluttered. For instance, it would be great to see the effects applied to each track in a stack next to the track. I think Logic Pro is very clearly laid out by comparison (although Live is my preference). Also render to MP3: how about some other options such as VBR. And when importing, can we use m4a files yet?
Glad the browser is starting to improve but it's got a long way to go.

They may well give you a free upgrade. For all the problems I've had with Ableton since version 10, they' very honorable about helping paying customers caught between versions. See what they say.

I started making music with Ableton (version 7). Never used it for looping or live performances, only songwriting and music production - always thought the Session View was amazing to build song structures and write to each section. But the evolution for the rest of the DAW to catch up with other basic needs has been so slow over the years that I can't help but feel let down. I know, it says, and always has said Ableton LIVE. But did it really have to take 10 years to add waveform zoom? A key selector for the project? And why are we still missing a MIDI input/Chord analyser to the top of the window? It's so useful...
But then they go ahead and literally write in a whole VST (XO, an expensive on at that...) into the Drum Rack ( 4:40 )... It's frustrating. We appreciate it, but we also would appreciate these other tiny details that are so helpful to producers...

Not completely. But you can delete them until there's enough space. There's always 1 left but it isn't that bad. At least in live 9/10/11, you could show device slots modifying the Options.txt. I don't think it's possible anymore :(

i feel like I just paid for ableton 11 upgrade. xD love ableton but as a hobby user since like version 5.... maintenance cost is killin me. lol.
I still wish they would have a strum feature similar to FL. A keyboard shortcut that opens a small window with a few parameters for the midi.
The Strum feature is actually included in the midi updates. If you go back in the dropdown menu you can spot it its works great

I am happy to finally be able to throw away all the third party library organizers, like ADSR Sample Manager and Loopcloud, and use something right inside the DAW.

Worth $50-90...not over $200, why is Ableton so expensive??? If they had added an fx modulator and pitch correction like Cubase has, the price would be justified.
There is nothing quite like Ableton. It’s more of an entire ecosystem than a DAW. Once you start to use it you will understand why it’s expensive.
As a software engineer who does music prod in his free time, I can tell you that the amount of work that goes into creating software as complex and polished as Ableton takes an extreme amount of time from a very large group of engineers. All those people need to get paid for their work, so that trickles down into the price for Ableton Live.

Nice! This seems like a natural progression for the best live looping platform, to morph into a full fledged DAW. It's looking more and more like the top DAWs out there, and I personally think that is a good thing. For me, it let's me switch between platforms and still maintain basically the same feel and work flow.
They need to improve performance to be a top DAW. I used Live for many years I know what Im talking about,. Bitwig is far better in CPU usage, these new features are dope though.
@@nachoci6876 at least on new macs, with performance in live you can get really great performance as long as you don't use groups and don't have anything on the master. I don't understand exactly why other than it's down to how cpu cores are allocated. I think logic does a better job of it
@@domanca-dk3mx so it's better to use Bus instead of Groups? Is it less cpu intensive? Btw it would be useful if there was at least the possibility of displaying a set of tracks that go on the same bus as a "group" just to make the workflow easier.
@@mttlsa686 there's no difference between buses and groups regarding cpu. my understanding is that a signal path can only be calculated on one cpu core at a time. grouping tracks puts them on the same signal path since you're processing them together.
I'm not a computer scientist, just a producer, but this lines up with my experience - when I have nothing on my master I can have virtually unlimited tracks and devices in my sessions, but if I then add something to the master on a big session my computer will struggle.

Honestly i was asking more for a confirmation because i'm 100% sure that i've read that it's actually different to use busses and groups in terms of core/cpu use in the ableton live official forum. So i wanted to know from someone with direct experience. I should try to do it by myself and see if it's better with bus...

Right click on the volume fader and choose "show automation" and the lane will appear in the arrangment view

In Ableton 9 I could make endless racks and export masters with little recording at all, but now I have to freeze, flatten and record more effects over every track nearly

I have a 100 euros Behringer hd404 (pretty good mic preamps for the low price but very bad drivers) and it doesn't work properly even with projects that are not that heavy but perhaps they have a lot of fragmented audio clips. It got even worse since i updated my macbook to Catalina. I've tried to work with a simple scarlett 2i2 which i borrowed from a friend and there wasn't a problem.

I know it's mostly for electronic music, but I'd be sold if it were audio friendly for instruments at all. The no overdub or having lanes in a track. Been torn between this and studio one cause i do use a handful of vst instruments
Actually there are MIDI and audio take lanes. Just hit ctrl+alt+u to show and shift+alt+u to add them.
Overdubs and trackins lanes are 100% a current thing and there are many instrumentalists that use Ableton Live… why you pretend otherwise?

Some very decent new features, but is this really Live 12? Seems more like 11.xx update to me. I won’t be upgrading from 11 for this unless some future updates really impress.
Oh my god they fixed the waveform thing. Whenever I would get the level nice enough to not distort on my apollo the waveform would be so small. I have waited so long.

@@BeatAcademy I think he's referring to the option in Logic (and some other DAW's) to render a certain clip/region to a new audio track (basically with one hotkey, and then confirming with enter). A feature I absolutely love in Logic, as I'm not the biggest fan of working with midi.
Freeze, pre-renders the entire track, and is mostly geared towards saving CPU (but you are still using RAM though).
It's good for what it's meant for, but I would love to see a similar feature as the one in Logic, implemented in Ableton. There are certain workarounds though, and that flexibility is one of the cooler aspects of Ableton!
To be fair, I heard that "Freeze & Flatten" has become it's own feature in Live 12, you can do it it one go now apparently!

Lt's be honest! What's wrong with Ableton developers to NOT give users the ability to change the fader knobs? We are in 2024 and arrows as fader knobs?
For real. Traditional mixing feels way better in basically any other saw (except Bitwig, it is even worse) because of this.
Would be nice for them to add a "search all" feature that just searches in every category

One thing I noticed that is not been talked about is that if you upgrade to Ableton Live 12, you will no longer have Abletons Stock Sampler unless you buy the Ableton 12 Suite. So if you use Ableton Live Sampler alot and you are thinking of upgrading to Ableton 12 just be aware of this.
pretty sure you only have the sampler in live 11 studio as well
@justin-ju4eo Yes you are right Sampler must of always been part of the Ableton Live Suite, because I only noticed this when I downgraded from Ableton Live 9 Suite to Ableton Live 11 Standard.
At this point I really think Fl has a better update model in general
