I’ve been friends with Vicky, GNR’s ex-manager, since those days in the 80s - and I heard the contact lens story from her… not long after it actually happened! We all knew these guys were going to be huge, but had NO idea how huge! We loved the irony of Patience being sung by the guy who had no patience at all. I adored your story about the song dedication. It sounds like something out of a John Hughes movie.

    That whistling...
When I entered high school in 1991 in Johannesburg, the matriculating year (The Seniors) used to get an assembly in the school hall in honor of their class just before they sat their final exams, my first year in the school, and the first "Final Assembly" i`d witnessed saw them all walk down from the balcony to the stage to GnR`s "Patience"...I knew the song, as did a small amount of the guys and girls with me in Standard 6 (First Year)...we were all whistling along as they all filed onto the stage...
Still to this day the one memory I have of this track is ...not that I actually had the album on cassette tape and had heard it many times over, but all those people getting ready to leave the relative safety of high School and head out into a the big wide world...

"You Could be Mine" was on Use Your Illusion II, not I, but it's a simple mistake as they were released side by side. I had no idea that it was about the same girl in "Patience" though. What a difference! It just goes to show how ups and downs in relationships can completely change one's perspective.

    • @colico14
      @colico14 2 роки тому +7

That's right. "You Could be Mine" was also written in the "Appetite" days, which is why it sounds much more like that era of Guns. Still wish the "Illusion" records weren't so overproduced. The production they had on "Appetite" was perfect for that band. It sounded great and was just raw enough. As much as I love the music, the Illusions were WAY too slick-sounding and G 'N' R lost a lot of their impact because of it. They also don't swing the way the early stuff does. A lot of that is due to Adler being gone. Matt Sorum is a very solid drummer, but he doesn't have the same sense of groove. Steven Adler and Slash had been playing together for years. That was an important part of the original chemistry of the band. My two cents!

Use Your Illusion was originally planned to be a double album but opted to split it into two albums. this kind of thing was not new. Kiss release 4 albums on the ssame day when they release 4 solo albums. Bruce Springsteen 1 year after the release GN"R Use Your Illusion albums. did the same thing. when he release 2 albums on the same day. Human Touch and Lucky Town. Green Day almost pulled the same stunt but release their 3 albums Uno, Dos, Tre a few month apart.

My favorite band *ever*. AFD is one of the best albums ever recorded. UYI 1 & 2 have gotten better over the decades, and show the genius of Axl Rose. Chris Cornell's version of Patience is... brilliant. I'm lucky that I was in LA to grow up in this era, it helped drown out the pop music of the era. GnR filled a void in music at the time and then grunge came along and changed everything. But I'm still a GnR superfan at 54, and that will never change.

It's the flagrant racism in the verses from One in a Million that really tanked that album, and why it gets so little attention from the band.
Funny thing is...the verses seem to have nothing to do with the chorus..either lyrically or , even, musically.
It's like 2 separate song ideas were cut & pasted together - (which is totally a thing that happens when bands are trying to squeeze out an album..)
Axl outright drops the N-bomb - talk about the "invincible" rock star effect! 😳
Especially when your gun lead guitarist is half black!
(Slash's father was white, but mother was black, as in African-British).
...proving there was actually an ungodly amount of Patience & tolerance in that band...in all BUT Axl!
But Axl still managed to chew through each and every one of them.

Patience is my favorite song. The first time I heard it, my father and I were leaving the house to go on a hike, I was maybe six years old, I was eager to get out of the house and as we were putting our shoes on, "Patience" video started playing on MTV, and my father said, "Hold one we'll leave after this" I was so annoyed and wanted to hate the song? Especially since I'd had a cassette of Appetite, that I had hidden in my room and only would listen to it with headphones late at night because I knew my parents wouldn't approve of a six year old listening to such an album. So when I first heard "Patience," I wanted to hate this "whimpy" song, but within 30 seconds, I was engrossed. When we pulled into the trail head parking lot, the local radio station just started to play it. My dad shut the car off, ready for our hike, I exclaimed, "wait! that's the new Guns and Roses song" he turned the radio back on and listened one more time. As we headed to the trail I remembered saying, "they allow snakes in hotels?"

The "reunion" without him is a farce all because Axl (who legally is and owns the name "Guns 'n' Roses"...long story, look it up) didn't want to pay Izzy his rightful fair share during these reunion tours.Without Izzy's songwriting that was the core of the band, especially on Appetite, no way the band would have scaled the heights they did. Patience was better and more popular than all 3 songs above it the charts were wrong (again). I still find myself randomly whistling this tune without thinking. People don't give Izzy Stradlin enough credit for what he brought to the band. I still love his band the Ju Ju hounds and shuffle it all is a masterpiece. Great #1 in our hearts professor! An overlooked 'Ballard' is Judas Priest's - Before the Dawn from their 1978 album Killing Machine, otherwise known as Hell Bent for Leather in the US. This album, their 5th, is the first to feature the leather and studs look that they became renowned for. It was also their first foray into a more commercial sound whilst retaining the dark lyrical themes of their earlier works. It was also the last album to feature the bands original drummer Les Binks.

I had no negative memories of Jeff and had his cousin in a class and always felt there was more to him than the surface. Always good to know my feeliings were true. I get their place in the time line and they were huge when they 1st hit the scene. And I'll admit I liked them when they 1st came out. But being heavily rooted in bands like Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy, Anthrax, and most other radio rock and metal they grew tiresome and Mr. A's antics turned me off of them. Most of the others members of GNR have done well after moving on andre better for it. GNR will always have it timestamp on that period and theta no doubting their contributions.

I got grounded for whistling that J. Geils song when I was eight or nine. My mom was… weird. Geminis, man. 😂
This summer and autumn, I’m looking at the Tetons out the front window about an hour and a half drive from Blackfoot and the kids around here are just as sweet and precious now as you were then. There’s so much to be said for growing up in a special place like Idaho. ❤️
It took me a long time to come back around to GNR. If it wasn’t new wave, progressive, shoegazey, industrial, or techno, for years I wanted nothing to do with it. Strangely, it was leaning into obscure jazz that eventually led me to every kind of metal(!). Thank goodness for cheap used CDs racked in back rooms of thrift stores, because I’ve discovered and rediscovered so much great stuff that way.

He is a karaoke junkie, sings [a lot], and i just sit and listen/watch), he asked me what song I would sing if I actually did sing. I said Patience, because it is my favorite song, and I think would be the best for my voice (for the record, the one time I have sang a song at karaoke, it was actually Right Now by Van Halen, because it spoke most to what I was feeling/going through then).
He sang it for me later that night, and it has since been our song.

I was at the record store at the mall and I saw it in the cassette bin. Of course I bought it because of how much I loved Appetite. It was soon after that that they premiered the video for Patience on MTV. Before the internet, I just had to go to the record store as often as I could to find good music. My very first CD was actually both Use Your Illusion albums. My dad bought them for me for whatever event that coincided closest with their release. I remember when they released Lies. We were all dying for the followup album to Appetite. Instead, we got a package of what was essentially repackaged leftovers, only it was just half a package. While it wasn't a bad album, it wasn't in Appetite's league. By the time Illusion 1 & 2 came out 2 years later, the anticipation was at a fever pitch. Both were good albums, released 30 days apart as I recall, but nothing ever quite measured up to the raw intensity of Appetite. Subsequent albums The Spaghetti Incident and Chinese Democracy were far too little too late, and with FAAAAAR too much unnecessary drama. The band split in the mid nineties, with Duff and Slash forming Velvet Revolver, and Axl retreating into some self-induced psychosis. I loved the man...wish he'd been able to hold it together back when they were all in their prime.
