  • It has been called a flop, a letdown, and a failed album... Pretty much erased from the pages of music history, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s 6th studio album, the 90s classic, One Hot Minute has become a ghost record. It has been overshadowed by the massive success of its predecessor Blood Sugar Sex Magik and its follow-up Californication. But climbing to #4 on the Billboard Album Chart and selling over 2 million US units, and 4 million worldwide and producing 3 Top Ten hits including the #1 Hit My Friends is far from a letdown. Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and new guitarist Dave Navarro were going with the flow that took the band through a harrowing experience making the record including Anthony’s relapse. … A 4X platinum album? Most artist would die for that.. But, what happened? How did one of the most anticipated albums of its day become a lost chapter in this band’s history? well it all starts with a key member quitting and then later coming back.... John Frusciante is the key . Get the story next.

In February 1992 the Red Hot Chili Peppers made what lead singer Anthony Kiedis considered to be a disastrous appearance on Saturday Night Live. And much of that was thanks to guitarist John Frusciante, who at the time, was in a dark and dangerous place. Disillusioned by the band’s popularity and steeped in heroin abuse, he began isolating himself from his bandmates. Well, that night, Kiedis was already apprehensive because ‘Under the Bridge’ as their second number.
The song was a challenge for him to sing. And he was dependent on John for his cue. But John was in a sour mood. During dress rehearsal, he played Under the Bridge in a different key, out of tune, and in a different timing... basically reinventing the song. Afterward Kiedis tried to hash things out with John, but he wasn’t interested in talking. The show’s first number was ‘Stone Cold Bush’, which went well enough until the end of the song.
Kiedis, doing what he does, burst into a fit of wild stage antics. And he kicked John Frusciante in the process. Whether or not it was intentional, John wasn’t happy about it.
When the Peppers returned onstage for ‘Under the Bridge’, Frusciante may as well have been on another planet. He started playing a version of the song Anthony had never heard before.
Live, in front of millions of people, Kiedis was left scrambling for the right key. But the ad-libbing didn’t end there. Instead of singing his backing vocals, John simply screamed at the top of his lungs. Some fans saw John’s deviations as a creative and beautiful take on the song. But Anthony felt like he had been stabbed in the back and hung out to dry in front of America.

How about the spoken word intro to Deep Kick and the middle section of One Big Mob? I was in middle school and MTV was my life, this album was soooo anticipated, i remember watching the MTV documentary about the making of this album, it gave me that wanting to run away with the circus vibe, later went to see them that year, Anthony Kiedis got hit in the forehead with a liquor bottle in the first song… after the song he says “to the person who threw the bottle at my head, I just wanna say………. I love you” boom right into the next song. Special band, I’d say as important as Metallica and NIN. I had almost forgot how much I used to love RHCP and Flea;) this video really brought me back.

I couldn’t say it any better. It’s an incredible record, and probably my favorite. It’s just just beautifully complex with it’s tone and circumstance. Navarro not being a funk player? Man….sounded good to me…
Tracks like Deep Kick, One Big Mob, Walkabout. This is rock’n’roll magic.
Maybe it’s fitting that an album so good, is the one the band hates.
Californication was the let down for me. It’s the second most musically bland record after The Getaway.
One Hot Minute is just the last picture of the band with youth in their sound.

Being a long time fan of RHCP from their early punk-funk style starting with their first album, One Hot Minute was a definite departure from that style but it still grooved like crazy, of course how could it not when the rhythm section is Flea & Chad? Dave Navarro brought something to the table that was absolutely amazing. And I'll never slight John Frusciante because he is a phenomenal guitarist in his own right but the heaviness that Dave brought was just other worldly in my opinion. One Hot Minute will always be my favorite RHCP album of all time. I still listen to it after all these years.

They said he was one of the best guitarist that had auditioned but there was someone already in mind, but if that didn't work out they would let him know. As always thank you for the trip to the 90's. Red Hot Chili Peppers are truly one of a kind. I'll always remember One Hot Minute. Plenty of hits of that record. Dave Navarro did a good job filling in those guitarist shoes. It sounded different than Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic and I say that's a good thing. The first single Warped kicked everything into high gear. Aeroplane and My Friends were truly wonderful additions to their singles collection. My personal favorite is Coffee Shop! Thanks again Professor and have a good weekend 🤘

Just discovered (and subscribed) to your channel via this video. Loved all of the info and 90% of it was news to me. At the time this album was released I was fully chasing my own Rock'N'Roll dreams. Writing lots of music but also playing in a popular and busy cover band. We learned Aeroplane and My Friends and added them to our set immediately. They went over great with the crowd and we loved playing them. Funny thing though, they fell out of our set within a year. It seemed like nobody was really into them after awhile and they got shuffled out in favour of songs that got a better reaction. To this day it is still my partner and guitar player's favourite Chili's album. He has bugged me for years to re-learn My Friends and your video has inspired me to do so.

Navarro has a great guitar sound, but John Frusciante is a guitar god and has otherworldly vocal/songwriting chops.

I am posting today because I really love the juxtaposition of the LP's you have in the background. As a practicing guitarist/bassist/musician, I was profoundly influenced by five of the six albums I can see. These are RUSH, Jefferson Star-Plane-Wheelchair, Gary Numan, The Police and the Guess Who. In particular, as a Jefferson Star-Plane-Wheelchair fanatic, I was impressed at how the Kantner driven version of the band was able to meld current music sounds and styles with his personal philosophy. You can probably include the KBC band in that grouping.
In fact, I have gone out of my way to see a version of the Guess Who (1982, Boulder, original bass player and drummer), RUSH (1982, with Rory Gallagher), The Police (1983, with UB-40), Gary Numan (2019-ish), and the Jefferson Star-Plane-Wheelchair in so many variations that I have lost count (1980-2021).
And, if I may suggest - Please do a show on the psychedelic tunes done by the GUESS WHO on their first four (odd) albums; Canned Wheat, Wheat Field Soul, American Woman, Share The Land, and Bannatyne all have some pretty "far out" tunes.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU and "coolness" to all of the bands you have showing. They profoundly influenced my life and music.
Thank you very much for the great shows. Clap For The Wolfman.
    Cheers.....MC Malthus.
