7:40 the reason you can go 45 is because they are compound angles. It's trigonometry. The diagonal of a square with sides length 1 is the square root of 2 - the diagonal of a cube with sides length 1 is the square root of 3. When you have an angle from one perspective, that doesn't mean that is the actual angle being cut into the tooth. All the angles being combined are what lead to the end result. Thanks for a good video, glad I stumbled into your channel.
You’re giving me flashbacks from college😆 I don’t typically get comments like this regarding my firewood videos. Thanks though I appreciate it👍🏻 glad your here buddy!
Mr. Doug this is very interesting. The broad file would be versatile for the raker/depth gauges. As to quality files and durability, chain prep is important and you spoke of that. The cleaning of that high quality file is important also. Rust prevention, sweat is a file killer as well. Another file cleaning tip is to back-drag the file through a scotchbrite pad periodically. Was that mouse living in that hollow, or was he just in the neighborhood? I enjoyed this sir....
When I'm in the shed, I find it really good to spray the file W break clean and then hit it with the air gun..every 15-20 strokes. It makes a massive difference imo
What I am wondering is what happened to file quality and durability. Seem the hardness is just lacking from files of years gone by. Even files marked SWISS MADE does not really make a difference. What the hell gives. Does the HEXA sharpen chain really work for hickory wood that is frozen in the woods ?? Seems most videos show cutting solf woods. I am from the northeast woods of Pennsylvania. We mostly have hardwoods to deal with for sure. What can you show us to make cutting tough wood possible with speed cuts too. Look forward to find out the answer Sir DOUG. Peace vf
We don’t know for sure yet, but this profile is closer to a square filed profile and square is certainly faster. The Hexa profile isn’t quite as aggressive as square proper. So in theory, Hexa should be more durable.
It should hold an edge longer. A round filed chain chisel chain has a very fine point, but it's effectively hollow ground, which means the fine edge is not backed up by much, so it will dull more easily than a square filed chain. The Hexa idea seems to be simplifying square grinding so people don't have to think about angles as much. It may add up to something similar, but having such an angle on the side plate will likely be worse off than square file - the chips/sawdust should be carried by the chain, not allowed to escape out the sides. The Hexa file should also be able to be used for square filing since it still includes the 120 degree angles of double bevel and "triangle" files.
I get what your saying, but this video isn’t made to show square filing proper. I’m trying to show how a person can file to get the “HEXA” profile. The HEXA file is to be used like a traditional round file with no extreme angles.
All this different fillings is a logistical nightmare, my round fillings giving me bloody sharp chains. Like the old saying goes don't change it if it works
@@IndianaDoug If you drop your file 10 degrees you would get an even better result. I used to do this type of filing with a goofy file. Look up Atop racing cut on YT. Also, can you do your cuts in a smaller piece of wood?
@@24cupsandcounting thanks for the source and tip, I’m willing to try anything to see how it works. The problem I’m dealing with is if I keep angling down only the working corner and a small section under the side and top plate get sharpened. It’s like the top plate angle doesn’t line up at that point.
@@IndianaDoug I am not referring to square filing but the Atop style. You still file as you would conventionally with a round file. Dropping your file 10 degrees will eliminate some of the beak on the tooth.

@@IndianaDoug lots of angles involved with square filling!
I have plenty of dull chains. Will try this. Thanks for the info Doug.
Give it a shot. Remember this is to imitate the Hexa filing. A proper square profile would be a more extreme angle.
Looks like you nailed it buddy!👌 I'm looking forward to seeing comparisons between round, square, and hexa
I think it’s gonna be a great contender.
Is higher cutting speed for stihl hexa

I’ve heard of people breaking the hexa files from just filing if that tells you anything🤦🏻♂️
I love the bloody fingers! And the rat too!

Very cool! Could be a silly question, but does the hexagon shape help it cut faster, hold an edge longer or both?

Good video, thanks for the link 👍
My pleasure, I think I like these file better than the double bevels!!
Did this profile turn out to be a winner? I was also wondering if the edge held up or if it seemed to dull any faster? Thanks for the vid.
To be completely honest, the profile in this video seems better. So far, the real HEXA seems to be kind of a flop.
