    The L-39 is a fantastic machine, surprisingly easy to fly. I was lucky to get a 3-day training on it with the Breitling Jet Team in France, seating in the front-seat. For a modest C-172 VFR private pilot like me, it was the experience of a lifetime. Turning around the clouds at 600 kph is something I will never forget. It was like piloting an X-Wing!

      Thanks Gary - That is the best compliment anyone has ever given me. Swing by anytime! Someone who has really inspired me in the same way is Bob Hover. He has done such amazing things in aviation yet able to tell stories so eloquently and humbly. I was always very impressed by that. Check out "Flying the Feathered Edge" The Bob Hoover Project if you have not already seen it. Awesome documentary.

    The idea that this video has only 131,000 views as I am watching it again for I think the third time now, pisses me off.
    How this type of quality aviation content doesn't have at least an order of magnitude more views is truly beyond me.
    How I wish this weren't so.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  7 років тому +5

      Thanks! I am just keeping my head down and trying to create the best ever green aviation content that I can. Some hit, some don't and I have no idea why. Like my 2 part series with the Coast Guard was what I thought was some of the best stuff we'd ever produced, yet the initial view counts were below average. Interestingly - that series is over a year old and is now starting to see some renewed traction. So I guess there is something to be said for always aiming to make ever green episodes such as this one which will hopefully continue to be discovered and enjoyed by new people over time.

    My wife’s cousin’s husband flies an RV8 that he built. I helped rivet the main spar, and got to fly in it a couple of times. Ron loved sharing the experience, and it was pretty cool to get to fly in something I had seen in its earliest stages of construction, and even contributed in a small way to its completion. I think it’s great that even seasoned pilots can still get joyful about a perfect day up in the sky, and sharing it with someone. Thanks for taking us along, Steve.

    I owned and flew a Jet Provost Mk4 in the late 90's when the L-39ZA's had just hit the states. For a straight wing trainer it's quite the performer. The one you flew looks to be in stellar condition. Through the CJAA I met a guy with a L-39. We had a lot of fun doing ACM out in west Texas. Periodically a friend with a Canadian T-33 (much better performance than the US version) would join the fray and we'd get the "you're dead" call almost immediately. Did I forget to mention my friend flew A-4's in Vietnam. You learn a lot about energy management before you get "the call". You should get an LOA.

    Back in the early 2000,s I was able to do some aerobatic flying with a competitive aerobatic pilot. I was pretty good while he was flying, I only got queasy once. But, when I was flying there was no issues. He taught me over a few hour and a half flights in the aerobatic box how to do hammerheads, a proper loop, snap rolls, 8 point rolls, cuban 8,s ect but the most fun was a tail slide with the flip over backwards. I already had some training before these flights. I could loop, roll, and spin no problem. But these flights with a competitive pilot in a real aerobatic airplane was a whole new world. Such fun. According to the G meter I am a 5 to 6 G pilot in recoveries, 5 usually. We never went over 6 and I wasn't greying out yet, then again, was never at 6 for very long. I recommend this to every pilot. Real unusual attitude flying instead of pilot training methods. Think real stalls over insipient stalls. And besides, it is so much fun!

    Great to know you're getting your instrument add-on. It really improves your overall navigational skills, much in the same way that tailwheel flying improves your overall flying skills (I'm sure you already know this stuff).
    In my opinion, there are no distractions since breaks are usually "Much Needed" while training for IFR and using another flight as the distraction just helps to burn it all in.
    I'm kinda glad that my IFR was done when GPS and Loran were not yet available. It's kinda hard to go back to that type of navigation in hard IMC though. Lot's of mistakes were made in those days even by really good instrument pilots, there was a lot more coordinating of vectors with ATC and radar back then as well. GPS really helps with safety and reduced workload on all concerned.
    Keep that Foreflight backup Synthetic Vision handy while in IMC in case you lose vacuum or an alternator.
    I had a hard time remembering procedures and copying IFR clearances so I recorded some procedures and clearances on a cassette tape, then I would play them back (looped) at a low volume while I slept. That may not work for some but it sure helped me out.
    I'm sure your instructor has driven it home that you need to stay at least five minutes ahead of your airplane at all times (mentally), that is a very important thing to do, otherwise things "Will" unravel (again, I'm sure you already know this stuff but others who see this may not).
    Thanks for the post!
    Keep those plates handy. :-)
