This is an awesome aircraft. I think even today this is still the fastest prop plane out there, with a top speed of 437 mph. My grandfather, William Walker flew this in WWII in the European theater when he was in the US Army Air Corps. He has told me of a few dog fights he was in against some pretty skilled German pilots. I think he was only 21 back then. He passed away here a couple of years ago at the age of 91. God bless all of those brave pilots as well as all of the veterans of late and today. Thank you for this great video!
P-51D 436 mph, P-47D Thunderbolt 428 mph, P-47M 473 mph, P-47N (served in Pacific and with Mustangs escorted B-29's on bombing missions to Japan) 467 mph, F4U-4 Corsair 448 mph. All served in WWII. P-51H 487 mph (post war). In August 1944 a test bed P-47 "razorback" with the upgraded engine destined for the P-47M and an upgraded GE turbo supercharger recorded a top of 504 MPH. The plane was nicknamed the "Superbolt" and had a cartoon drawing of Superman on the cowling. This was fastest speed for a piston powered airplane until several decades later it was broken by an F8F Bearcat heavily modified for racing.
Christopher - Today's P-51's fly way faster than 437mph. The modified race plane "Voodoo" which races at the Reno Air Races flew at 550+ mph while trying to set a speed record. I don't recall if they set the record or not. I knew a pilot WWII and Korean war vet who flew the P-51 in combat. He said if he had the choice of any plane at the time, he said he'd take the P-47 Thunderbolt. He said it was almost as fast as the 51, and could take A LOT more punishment. That it could take a lot of damage and still get you home.

@@stevewilk2726 This. The P-47 pilots preferred to emergency land instead of bailing out because the plane was so tough and the cockpit had so much extra space.
I was obsessed with WWII planes as a kid, and Mustang was one of my favorites. Your plane is gorgeous inside and out. Even those instruments are so handsome!
Yeah, Supermarine is right up there, I did say the Mustang was ONE of the sexiest aircraft ever ;) I remember one of my early flights as a student pilot (quite a while ago now) I was heading back to base after some stall / spin training when I heard a transmission in my headset to the local TC mentioning something about Mustang, aerobatic maneuvers and training area (where I was). Next thing I knew I heard the roar of a merlin 12 and a silver streak came rocketing past, barrel rolling over the top of my little Piper Tomahawk, climbing away then looping back towards me to pass about 500ft to port before turning, passing me again and crossing my nose from low starboard to high port. Aside from being just awestruck by the sight and sound of one of my hero aircraft tearing around me, I momentarily imagined I was in a fighter trying to get guns on this silver streak and realised that this would be a bloody hard thing to achieve! (especially in a Tommy). It was incredible and to this day, one of my favourite flying experiences. It was the day I truly fell in love with the P51. So yeah, you can have your SM ;)
***** I feel very lucky to have experienced it, a few minutes later and I would have missed it! I just realised that it sounds in my telling of it like the p51 was really close as it went over the top of me. In truth it wouldn't have got closer than 500ft, but to me it seemed I could have reached out and touched it. I can still feel the rumble in my chest as it went past. A truly wonderful memory.
It just so happens that I am building a 1/32 scale mustang model kit at the moment, and whilst google has some good pictures of the cockpit interior they aren’t that much use to me as I am building it as close to original as possible. I can see that some of your equipment is additional, probably due to FAA and insurance requirements, but on the whole it has been a big help seeing the inside of such a wonderful and well maintained example of such an iconic WWII fighter aircraft. Thanks for sharing this excellent and informative video with all of us. 👍👍👍👍👍😃

The most beautiful aircraft I've ever seen!!
thank you soooo much for posting this. how i wish i were one of you master p51 pilots but you know..this is the closest il get to being and flying in one so il definately settle for getting an actual walkthrough of what you go thro to get these machines up in the air. very much appreciated ^-^
Such an awesome video showing people how to do a proper start up as well
My father assembled 30 P51 airplanes in the decade of 1948 - 1955 during the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, he was one of the first promotion of mechanics of those aircraft., thanks for this video.
Nice, descriptive video. Very generous of you to share this info. Thank you!
*The Mighty Mustang of WWII was the F-22 in of its time!!* *This will be exciting to watch, as we've never seen anyone post such an incredible vlog!* *We really appreciate you sharing it with us too!!*
The MIGHTY MACHINE of WWII was the P47 not 51.......
@@stevewilk2726 This. The P-47 pilots preferred to emergency land instead of bailing out because the plane was so tough and the cockpit had so much extra space.
nice joke, the F-22 in this time was the ME262
@flip inheck thats not true and Meteor was in Service? Hahaha
Kermit Weeks is my spirit animal.
I was obsessed with WWII planes as a kid, and Mustang was one of my favorites. Your plane is gorgeous inside and out. Even those instruments are so handsome!
I've been too. I still am 😁
Really beautiful plane! I imagine in a bright sunny day crossing the sky with all the chrome..must be seen from really far way!
Its not just an aeroplane.... its an art form...☺️
Fantastic paint job and awsome chrome
“Look over there!” “What?”
“Red Tails!”
What a a superb piece of American engineering. Beautiful plane. Beautiful Cock-pit. Gorgeous. Absolutely flipping smashing!
Thank you for the respect to Lee Archer and the Tuskegee Airmen. I love the guy in the Zoot Suit. The Red Tails.
That’s he shinest plane I have seen ! I can do a proper shave looking at the reflection !! Nice job !
My God, what a beautiful example of one of the sexiest aircraft ever. Thank you for this wonderful series of videos.
***** I'm listening..
Yeah, Supermarine is right up there, I did say the Mustang was ONE of the sexiest aircraft ever ;)
I remember one of my early flights as a student pilot (quite a while ago now) I was heading back to base after some stall / spin training when I heard a transmission in my headset to the local TC mentioning something about Mustang, aerobatic maneuvers and training area (where I was).
Alan Hamilton That would have been something to behold!
the p-51 it was an ugly plane all the germans planes are beter
In tears Kermit. Thank you!
Amazing how fast those kids got up in the air back then..
Red Tails...
What a stunning plane. Must be a riot to fly.
