the difference between pick-up lines being smooth vs creepy is if the person saying them 1. believes the lines themselves/confidence 2. is attractive/you find that person attractive. number 2 is more or less a requirement or you'll get the 'I have a boyfriend' reject-down back from them.

First of all, he's conventionally attractive, that alone makes it less likely for people to react negatively.
