You're one of the very few guys I've seen who has a very similar taste in playing, music, gear and tones as I do hehe. Too bad we live on opposite sides of the world hehe. Keep up the cool videos!
Fantastic video! And a really important point at the start (as well as throughout) - dial the amp but don’t forget the volume and tone pots on the guitar! I’ve had many compliments on how crisp my guitar tone is in recordings recently and all that was is PV65 pickups in a jazzmaster, on a gainier amp tone, with the guitar volume dialled back slightly for the main tone and to leave me somewhere to go in peak moments of the song. Like you say - with other instruments in the mix it’s a fantastic way to go and often overlooked and your tone and video here really proved how great it can sound! 😊
I should also add- like you say the neural noise gates in plugins and the QC are amazing. On top of that, if you’re using pitch shifters or transpose features with gain then this also makes guitars such as this a great option imo as they retain that clarity for longer which is bundles of fun!
the knobs and switches aren't there for no reason right? i'm happy you take advantage of them as well! In a mix both guitars do extremely well outside of just... obscene amounts of gain but even at that point does it even matter what kind of guitar is being used in drop C and 50 gain stages of soldano??? hahaha Good shout on the transpose, looks like I may have been right about the QC being perfect for you
@ oh 100 percent- even so the only 1 or 2 semitone transposing in certain sections it tracks, in my opinion, so much better than what I had before (no slight on that of course but this is definitely perfect for me and with a recent update the new fender amp capture in there has led me to getting genuinely one of my favourite clean ambient tones I’ve ever achieved lol) But yeah exactly- the volume and tone pots are totally there to be used and it’s great you put this forward and hope people experiment and get some great tones and some combinations maybe they hadn’t thought of to help create some great music!
Shielding doesn’t help,as much as people think. It is suppose to act as a Faraday Cage…now look that term up and try to understand what it means then you will see how silly the concept is being the pickups are not isolated but exposed to the ambient.
@@debhart4302 I’m not sure if you were able to measure the noise. Regardless I asked to look up the definition and you didn’t…..it doesn’t block RF from the air and in all honesty the 60 hz comes from the line.
Yes, great vid! A few anecdotes to add: Spencer Hazard from Full of Hell (noisy grindcore) puts HBs in most of his offsets but recently started playing a stock Vintera Jag (also Sam sometimes plays a Bass VI). Ben Verellen from Helms Alee (sludge metal) plays an AVRI Jazzmaster. Nick Cogan from Drug Church (post hardcore) plays custom shop Jazzmasters. And good ol’ Scott Hill from Fu Manchu (stoner rock) hs been playing a vintage Jag forever.
Yeah when I saw thrice a few years back he was using what appeared to be a AV jazzmaster as well, it can be done and there's no reason to ruin these guitars with humbuckers haha
Really good sounds here! One of the techniques I love is to use a neck pickup with the tone rolled all the way down, then put it through a fuzz or Rat. Kinda like the blues "woman tone", but put through higher gain output. It's my understanding that offsets were used by college/indie/alternative bands to even greater effect by putting a rolled off rhythm circuit through fuzz boxes for that genre sound. And lets not forget that strangle switch for cutting through a mix!
fuzz and the rhythm circuit is one of the reasons so many people fell in love with these guitars and some still dont even know how to nail it because they never use the rhythm circuit hahaha
The Jaguar sounded great, with a more classic rocky sound and you got the Jazzmaster sounding really punky. I'd much prefer to have a guitar that I can tone down the high end rather than one with a dull, woolly sound that you can't get any clarity out of or cut through the mix. That's why I prefer single coils and the main guitar styles from Fender. 🎸🎸
I know this defeats the intent of the video, but on a side note wouldn’t 1 Meg Pots facilitate and be beneficial for high output Humbuckers which tend to be bass heavy and midrange?
It does kinda defeat the purpose. I've heard it in person once and everyone in the room agreed it was not something people do often for a good reason haha, he threw 500k's back in next string change.
I wonder if Fender's offsets are becoming more popular these days because of an effort on Fender's part. After all, "everyone" already has a strat or a tele, so it's time to sell them a JM or a Jag. I know personally, as a kid, I always thought the JM was the coolest looking of Fender's offerings but because I was a kid and didn't know any better, I was put off by the name Jazzmaster. With Squier offering a Jag with HB's, I have to say that's the reason I finally decided to get into offsets and while that guitar was cool, I'm glad I did end up getting a "true" offset. And also, both the JM and Jag sound killer through that amp! In general, I always love how the pickups on my JM sound like it's fighting me when I try to get it to do hard rock stuff, it gives a tone that's so unique compared to all my LP's or humbucker equipped guitars and just has a characteristic to it that I can only describe as sounding so mean, it makes me pull a face when I riff out on that thing.
it makes me depressed when people permanently destroy offset guitars and i wish they would stop doing it hahaha, like you said there are many offsets these days that come stock with humbuckers
@@nostro1001that is true, I'm more so just talking about in general, I'm starting to see more people getting into offsets that aren't just your typical clean/indie people. But Fender absolutely need to put more care and attention to the Jag
Honestly I believe these guitars sound great with hi gain pedals that are notoriously cleaner or more vintage voiced. The HM2 is perfect for example. I never liked the "Marshall" style pedals or things like that, it just makes the Jazzmaster overly bright and underwhelming.
ive gotten to the point where i believe anything can be tweaked to work with either of these guitars, it's just a matter of whether you like the end product or not. ive never tried the HM2 with an offset, that'd be a fun one to do
What if I have a professional American Jaguar with the v mods in it? Can I really work with these to get a more classic Jaguar sound and also enjoy high gain that they seem made for just by having different settings? I just got this and most people online seem to hate the pickups so I was considering changing them to pure 65 so I can have one Jaguar that sounds like a Jaguar. My mim has dimarzio cruisers so doesn’t really sound like a Jaguar.
who cares what anyone on the internet says, do you like the way they sound? I've played non vintage spec jag pickups and they've sounded great in their own ways. with v-mods higher gain won't have a problem just mess with the amp settings yeah
@ thanks, tbh I’ve never had a Jaguar with “authentic “ pickups so I guess I don’t really know what I’m missing 🤣. Even the other one I have came with dimarzio pick ups installed and the classic player stock ones in case I wanted to swap them. I do like how the v mods sound though and am enjoying the am pros switch options. Thanks, sometimes it’s kinda easy to just go down that rabbit hole of next gear piece or mod.

It's nice to know we are not alone right, sometimes I feel very different from most other players especially on youtube
Same here hehe. I'm basically the only one like this where I'm from (Denmark), so I've more or less spent 20 years playing alone in my basement lol
Great video! I agree with your view on tone. You got some classic sounds.
thanks man, amp settings go a long way just have to figure out what works for each guitar

The high gain settings really have that Jag sounding awesome!! Jazzmaster too. The only thing they need is shielding tape and good grounds.

@bluwng properly done though, I've seen it drop noise 98%. Key word, properly.

@bluwng if you use a power filter it helps a lot. I can HEAR the difference, and have even recorded before and after videos. It works for me.
shielding makes or breaks an offset
hell yeah!
power chords are fun haha

So for more gain, just dial up the gain?
Thats amazing, thanks!!

That’s where I’m at too with my preferences for the most part
I always find myself reaching for single coils when recording but humbuckers live.
How many people are you playing out with and how much gain are you using?
I know this defeats the intent of the video, but on a side note wouldn’t 1 Meg Pots facilitate and be beneficial for high output Humbuckers which tend to be bass heavy and midrange?

I don't really think Fender puts much effort into a Jag. Their lineup has been rather feeble for years, unlike their JM range.
