Rustically Beautiful!! Don't know if you've tried one or not, but a double sided Japanese pull saw is my favorite hand saw. One side rips, the other crosscuts. You have to get use to it cutting on the pull, but that allows a much thinner blade thus a thinner kerf thus less effort needed. I used a push saw most of my life and discovered this saw about 5 years ago. I use it all the time now. Highly accurate once you get used to the feel of it. I love your channel by the way. Love that you have built your house with hand tools.
Рік тому
Thanks Bird! We'll probably invest in a japanese pull saw once we start doing more fine carpentry work. For now, the rough push saw does what we need it to haha
one part of their house building challenge is to use hand tools as much as possible.
Рік тому+2
Honestly, we never regretted our decision to not use hand tools during the whole build.. but cutting the sink hole made us wish we had a chainsaw indeed ahaha!
Your building skills continue to grow and improve. Very impressive work with installing the sink, must have taken ages to complete. Running water into the cabin will be a game changer for you both.
Рік тому
Thanks, Robyn! We thought cutting the hole in the counter would’ve taken all day honestly, but it was done in 2 hours ahah And we are very excited for running water!! It definitely will be a game changer :)
Kevin is coming along so nicely. I am looking forward to seeing your cabin with running water in the course when you move in permanently. Curious about your garden, how big will it be how much will you grow, will you have enough food from your garden to can, or preserve in other ways. A lot of excitement coming our way. Thank you
Great job Nick and Maela. The cabin is looking mighty fine. I agree with another comment that a chainsaw might be in your future since the Canadian winters are brutal.
Рік тому
Thank you very much!! We are still very stubborn and refuse to buy a chainsaw ahaha but time will tell if we change our minds ;)
Really enjoyed binging on your off-grid cabin build series! Thanks for taking the time to share with us! Looking forward to following along from Interlochen, Michigan.

Glad you like them! We're happy to have you on board for the ride
Looking good guys. We start are new adventure at the end of this month we move up to are 40 acres of paradise. Hopefully are build looks as good as Yours. Will have first video put up this weekend
I think you’ll need a larger wood shed. I live in a 600sq ft log cabin and burn through 3.5 cords of mostly Aspen and Pine in NW Wis. I stay two years ahead on firewood to make sure it’s good and dry. It’ll be tough for you guys to get ahead on firewood with all the other things you have on your plate. A chainsaw may be a good investment?
Рік тому+1
Yeah, we were thinking of building a second woodshed and alternate the wood (fill one wood shed while we use the wood stored in the other one), but like you mentioned, it’ll be tough to get ahead.. i think we’ll just have to take a couple hours per day to work on it! A chainsaw would obviously make it easier, but that’s not what we want for now :)
Excellent video. You guys are rocking it. Are you thinking of adding on to the cabin in the future? All your improvements makes the cabin a home. Keep up the great work 👍🇨🇦
Рік тому
Thanks, David! We have no plan of adding any extensions for now, except to close the screen-in porch in the next couple months!! However, as our family get bigger, we might end up needing more space!!
Good to see you back. You have a lot of snow in the woods. How big will your garden be? I hope you are planning for a very high deer fence. I have even seen wood chucks climb a short fence. Something to think about for the spring.
Рік тому
Hey there! Yes, we got some record snow this year in Quebec, which was both a blessing and a curse ahaha For the garden, we don’t plan on having fences right away, last year we got our lettuces stolen by the deers, but nothing else, so we’ll try out luck again this year ahaha
Hey nick im an aspiring cabin builder and was wondering if you could do a video highlighting the tools you’ve used and what you found best to work with. Interested in the different saws you have used, setting saw teeth, what draw knife, chisels, axes, hammers, even fasteners. What do you find is the best and how you sharpen all them
Another great video adventure you are brilliant you put a lot of thought into it by just using simple things I have enjoyed every videos you have done ✔ well done all the best and keep safe
Happy to see the kitchen start to come together. I'm anxious to see the drain system. I ask myself, drain line or bucket?
Рік тому+1
Hi Dave ! Good to hear from you :) For the rest of the winter, we will have to go with the good old bucket technique!! However, we plan on doing a draining system out of the cabin during the summer :)
Bonjour Quelles plaisir de vous retrouver bravo pour votre projet et le travail que vous avez déjà réalisé ❤❤ comme on dit chez nous petit à petit l’oiseau fait son nid 😂 bon courage pour la suite de votre projet ❤❤
Mite be best to turn the Wood shed into a power house for all the solar stuff, and build a wood shed behind the cabin. Also if you are going to live there full time it mite be a good idea to improve the trail in to the cabin, that will help in the long run and you could get some needed fire wood when you widen the trail. As for internet have you looked into Starlink?
Рік тому+1
We’re thinking of keeping the electrical stuff inside, but we might just transform the wood shed into a small workshop!! Thank you for the idea :) And you are absolutely right for the trails ahaha i think it’s gonna be an ongoing project for the years to come.. As for Starlink, we have!! Their services are pretty cool, but 140$/month.. we are really cheap and you’d rather go to the library for free ahaha at least for now, but we might become a little less motivated as time goes by!
I was looking forward to y'alls new video and seeing how your winter was going...Im back in the US and spring has already started hear down south in Georgia. When is usually last snow for y'all?
Рік тому+1
Oh welcome back to your home! How was your traveling? And in Quebec, you never really know when winter is done ahaha. Two years ago, we didn’t have any snow on the ground in march, and last year, we still had snow in the shadows until mid may! Usually, April is when you really start to feel it end tho :)
On the wood shed I'm thinking why not close in the front, back and far side and open the side closest to front door. That would give you a smaller opening to help keep firewood drier. You guys got alot of ❄️. Your going to need fence posts and wire fence to keep animals out of your garden.
Рік тому+2
Hi Tim!! We might just do that for the wood shed! Less snow removal necessary also to get to the entrance ahaha As for the garden, we will add on to it for years to come and a fence is probably gonna be build at some point, but we might just risk it again this year and hope to keep some of our food! Last year, we got our lettuces stolen, but everything else was left intact. Fingers crossed we get this lucky again!!
Not sure if this is relevant but in Australia it is not recommend to stock pile wooden logs against (or even near) a wooden house, there are a few good reasons but the most serious is untreated wood lying around can (and typically does) encourage termite infestation. not sure if this is an issue for you up there. Take care :-)
Рік тому+1
Hey, thanks for the tip :) termites are frightening to me ahaha luckily, we don’t have that problem in Quebec!! The weather is a little bit too harsh for them
So you get good LTE signal where you are? I think I'm going to go with a router that takes a sim card and pay Rogers. Will you try to dig a well? I want to try for water this summer with a well point and if that won't work I'm digging an old school one and line with brick.
Рік тому
Yeah, luckily we get great signal at the cabin!! We thought about a data plan too, but we’ll try the library option until we get tired of it. How expensive is your plan with Rogers? For water, we will have a rain water collection system !! The bed rock is too shallow, so no well possible.. (since we don’t use power tools of course)
Ephesians 1:3-4 King James Version 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Gods blessings over you.
Nice build but just a thought are you chinking the exterior of the cabin before the bugs and birds start picking apart the insulation you have in the gaps between the logs

Yes it's very high up on our priority list! As soon as temperatures are high enough for the concrete to properly cure

When you talk about "your garden" next year, I cannot fathom how you will keep deer and other grazers off it.
Impressive using handsaws to cut the sink into the slab! Maybe time to get a chainsaw! The cabin is coming along nicely. Keep up the great team work!
one part of their house building challenge is to use hand tools as much as possible.
Honestly, we never regretted our decision to not use hand tools during the whole build.. but cutting the sink hole made us wish we had a chainsaw indeed ahaha!
The square that you guy's cut out for the sink would probably make a great cutting board.
We thought about that too but it's surprisingly heavy!! Might have to find another use for it
Your building skills continue to grow and improve. Very impressive work with installing the sink, must have taken ages to complete. Running water into the cabin will be a game changer for you both.

The mention of "woodshed" moving closer to the hosue is euphemism for Maela-Nick becoming parents - to have a child to take to woodshed.

Hello, good Working at the cabin, take care you ❤🙏
Thank you, Eric!! Take care :)
Esta ficando maravilhosa os acabamentos são os mais demorados obrigada por compartilhar seus videos
Better start collecting more firewood now, whole winter will likely use between 4 and 5 full cords to do the entire winter
Absolutely!! We are very late on wood collection. It’s gonna be ongoing for the next few months

if the hand saw sticks rub a candle on bothsides of the blade.
Good tip! We'll try that out

you could always move firewood storage right next to house and connect roof of each one...
ciao ciao💪💪👌👌👋👋
🙈 Why install such a large sink in this beautiful wooden slat?

Do you two have jobs? Are you close to where you work or are you going to quit and live off grid and try to be self reliant?
We used to work full time jobs, but we quit to try UA-cam full time. So far it's working!

Nice build but just a thought are you chinking the exterior of the cabin before the bugs and birds start picking apart the insulation you have in the gaps between the logs
Yes it's very high up on our priority list! As soon as temperatures are high enough for the concrete to properly cure
In your rush to trim the windows you left gaps in the insulation, which I hope you are going to fix with permanent chinking come warmer weather
Indeed! We are waiting for the temperatures to rise a little bit, and we start chinking :)
